Can't wait for AI to make it possible to reverse engineer automotive firmware and just bypass all the spyware like we can with Debloat Samsung TVs
As of September 29, 2026, there are 16,613 active satellites in Earth orbit, 11,128 of them Starlink.

A fun fact: Kessler syndrome is a runaway chain reaction in orbit. Collisions create debris, and that debris causes more collisions, and when something breaks into pieces, its mass stays the same but its total surface area goes up, and reflected sunlight scales with area.

I submit to you that our kids' kids won't be able to see the milky way galaxy because of this litter.

I'm not very excited. Access to the best AI is not a party I was invited to. And the people who are at that party, well, they don't exactly reflect on my best interests.
How did you handle escalation to a human flow?
Am I the only one that sees the irony of people working for creepy adtech like meta having to endure being tracked?
Re:Find my cat: open-source Cat Tracker on Monday September 18, 2023 @11:47AM (#37557836)
Letting your domesticated cat roam the neighborhood is the worst thing you can do to the natural environment around you. In N America, domestic cats are the most invasive species. Why? Because they absolutely destroy the local wildlife population. Wonder why you don't see a ton of birds? Because your cat is probably murdering them for recreation.

This is a great example of engineers optimizing the wrong thing.

Re:AI-generated Drake and The Weeknd song goes viral on Monday April 17, 2023 @10:21AM (#35601138)
I've been really getting into AI generated music. I see this as something that's going to get much better rather quickly.

Here are my two favorites:

Well, in the very least, we have flight logs. I think that's better than nothing.

This guy codes! No seriously, this is great feedback for the devs.
>>4. RaDonda Vaught's conviction. This is certainly not helping the case to get more nurses.

The precedent RaDonda's conviction set is far from favorable to a profession which is already very difficult and taxing. This is a BIG reason.

Re:Ask HN: Best way to learn about computing history? on Friday April 22, 2022 @04:00PM (#31127301)
My HS teacher made a pretty good high level video on computing history. I recommend starting there.

Just the rhythm of the algorithm baby!
Re:McGill must reckon with the reality of MK Ultra (2020) on Wednesday March 30, 2022 @09:35AM (#30855006)
Why do people even think that we can have a civilization by only making morally-sound decisions?

These types of experiments were reasoned to benefit the collective at the cost of the few. Which might be a decision one would make, if the factor to optimize for is the long term prosperity of the collective. Morality is relative, individualized, ambiguous, and always changing. Concluding that morality is not a stable pillar for civilization.

So why are we sitting here asking the government to be accountable to our morality?

I think morality is trending.

I think what happened is the government started to get good at Public Relations. Morality has become a reason fed to us for justification of legislation that somehow takes something from us. The irony is, government decisions cannot be biased by morality in principle.

Re:Tell HN: If You Are in Russia on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @06:39PM (#30521585)
>>We generally should not give any advice to them

I disagree completely. Putin's decisions aren't the decisions of everyday Russians. And the Ukranian conflict is more complicated than the single-side narratives you are fed. Giving people advice is the morally right thing to do.

Re:Namecheap: Russia Service Termination on Tuesday March 01, 2022 @06:26PM (#30521463)
This is an attack on the Russian citizen, a normal person who works a normal job.

I do not agree that the valid response is to hurt innocent bystanders. FU namecheap.

The adversity of your words is against hacker news rules. This isn't reddit.

>>Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine. Please don't fulminate. Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community.

I'll quit my current job if this is enforced by my company.

Is your view different? You don't believe natural immunity?
Re:FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine on Tuesday August 24, 2021 @04:53PM (#28294867)
This is actually a common misconception.

Covid has an animal host vector. Unless we start vaccinating deer, it's here to stay regardless.

You're spot on. Long term risks take many years to evaluate.

Re:Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft on Tuesday April 20, 2021 @03:40PM (#26880332)
TeamSpeak is still used heavily in the gaming community. Discord sucks when you have 50 people in the same voice chat.

Doesn't that also describe most stocks that do not have dividends? What is their tangible value?

Re:Mushrooms Can Eat Plastic, Petroleum and CO2 (2018) on Thursday December 03, 2020 @01:23PM (#25292460)
Couldn't we just augment the existing plastic with seeds/fungi is some way? That way, after some time in the trash, the fungi actually develops a colony which eats the packaging?
Slightly on topic:

Say "McDonalds!" to end the commercial.

The sentiment of the threads in this discussion are very anti-police. I personally see this as a privileged perspective.

>It might instead be that the more aggressive police departments are the ones that more seek to purchase military equipment, and the more aggressive police are the ones with more killings. I tend to think that's the case.

Causal relationship between killings and military gear can easily be explained by "dangerous communities motivate police to seek out military gear. Dangerous communities have more killings in general." I believe it's the most straightforward explanation.

Re:America is giving up on the pandemic? on Tuesday June 09, 2020 @11:30AM (#23467484)
Most people who I talk to don't really care about it anymore because they are convinced that the statistics are inflated as a direct result of Hospital administrators fighting for more funding.

I think for every 100 covid deaths, it's probably closer to 1-5 actual covid deaths and the rest just get conflated.

We like to believe that government is a person, it takes less mental cycles.
Some people, including myself, see his actions as courageous and that of a good leader. Not succumbing to political pressure and making sure his employees can still get paid. Respect.
