I assume the parent meant the broad indices.

I didn’t even see letters until reading your comment…

Optogenetics is an incredible tool for probing and dissecting the activity of neurons within neural circuits. It’s gives enormous power to scientists to perform more causal manipulations and test ideas more concretely than observation or genetic manipulations alone. I’m not sure why it would be considered a toy, though the utility depends on what you do with it. So far this has been primarily limited to understanding the brain but there’s work to develop clinical therapies using optogenetics as well. I collaborated with Karl extensively in my PhD work with some others in the comments here. It’s exciting to see his work get this recognition.
Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:38AM (#49893051)
I personally find that I’m often extroverted and sometimes introverted. I think it’s less helpful to think of this as a static character attribute and more of a mood. I think the parent is pointing to the idea that by labeling something this may reinforce it such that introverts become more introverted by finding validation in books like Quiet, for better or worse. It’s a part of an interesting discussion that doesn’t seem to get talked about much at the very least.
Re:We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians on Saturday September 26, 2026 @01:07AM (#49853381)
How is that relevant at all?
Re:We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians on Saturday September 26, 2026 @01:04AM (#49853372)
Nit, but Terrence Tao did not write this article, it’s a guest post.
What? Come on. I’m on that demographic and have zero issues talking to people out in the world. If you believe this then certainly it’s true. Otherwise, just go meet and interact with people normally.
Re:Resist "AI" on Friday September 11, 2026 @09:25AM (#49658046)
"A real experiment: “Devise an honest AI experiment in your department, measuring real costs and real benefits. Try, honestly, to find all the flaws with this AI stuff.”

This does not seem like a honest framing of an experiment... Wouldn't that be to create a true trial to assess strengths and weaknesses, or to figure out in what ways AI is effective for your team as a tool?

Re:De-Brainrot Vacations on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @12:16AM (#49605555)
I don’t remember my dreams most nights and that’s always been the case. When I do it’s fairly disconnected and random vignettes without discernible meaning. So I’m missing one of the most important aspects of my life? I guess it’s possible but it’s hard to feel that way without having experienced profound dreams.
Re:Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:40PM (#49590694)
A path bar anywhere in the interface?

I also want this to be able to copy a file’s path. Right now I’m not even sure how to do that aside from cmd-i to get info and then clunkily drag select the parent dir to copy. Repeat for the file name. Am I insane or is there a better way? Just use terminal? For a time I used pathfinder which had a feature to copy the full path but I ended up hating the subscription and constant feature churn.

For what in this case?
Re:Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing? on Sunday August 30, 2026 @11:41PM (#49505328)
A better analogy for an individual might be a cnc lathe. You can make anything you want perfectly but if you enjoyed wood turning then you may not get the same satisfaction from the process of running a cnc.

I feel the same way, though I recognize it’s possible for me to get too caught up in taking a photo to appreciate the full breadth of a scene. Like everything, some balance is appropriate
Bending Spoons just bought Airtable too, correct?
Re:Climbing Guide as a Shared Infrastructure on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @12:42PM (#49348401)
I’m also early 40s but have been climbing since 17. No major injuries and it’s been a fantastic way to stay in good shape, although I’ve never pushed it to my limit. If you’re obsessive by personality type it’s very easy to overdo it. If not, it can be a great way to maintain fitness, sanity, friends, etc.
Re:Pixel Watch 5 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @06:37PM (#49279527)
The novelty of Apple Pay on watch wore off? I use this all the time but it’s not noteworthy or interesting, just a great feature that’s seamless and doesn’t require pulling out my phone.
Re:Is it all just vapourware? on Sunday August 09, 2026 @10:59PM (#49238751)
I find it game changing for experimental work and prototyping. As a research scientist this is a major bottleneck and clean code is often not the right optimization target.
If you look at any neuroscience paper, mice will run 10k a day or more on a wheel overnight. I thought the axis labels were wrong when I first saw that type of study. It’s quite common.

Please do not make your exhaust louder. I’m sure you will not listen to a rando on the internet but it will annoy the shit out of thousands of people for what? Some yuk yuks? I get it. It’s fun. I would enjoy it too, but not yours. please don’t.
For what reasons is it better? I’d rather have the evening light than the first 20 minutes when I get up.
I think I just joined an eternal September on your site. It might be nice to add a practice mode that doesn’t spam everyone with nonsense.
Re:Study: "Mommy, do you love your phone more than me?" on Friday July 10, 2026 @12:02AM (#48855619)
That’s irrelevant to the issue with the study that the parent identified.
Re:Just Pay the Subscription on Thursday July 09, 2026 @11:07AM (#48847194)
I’m with you. I generally refuse. There are way too many things that I’d like to use extremely intermittently that beg for recurring revenue. I just opt out for the most part, aside from a tiny subset of indispensable apps.
Re:The Age of Reading Is Over on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @04:14PM (#48836878)
Is this real? I spend plenty of time online but have no problem still reading books. I don’t know anyone else who stopped reading books either. I’m 41 so maybe this affects people who grew up with social media but I can’t quite tell how hyperbolic the descriptions of the problem are.
Re:What Do We Know About the Microplastics Inside Us? on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @03:50PM (#48836607)
Having lived this reality, people respond to incentives. Your have to very fundamentally re-architect the incentives and career progression in academia to make publication of null results more common. The other side of this is reducing the time and hassle of publication. Right now I’m unlikely to battle for 1.5-3 years to get something through peer review for a result that nobody will find interesting.
I think this is different if you have vision though. I struggle to understand how someone can look at intelligent animals that don’t have language and not intuitively assume that they’re conscious. Yes this is a tricky problem without an answer but IMO the elements of consciousness can exist without language if visual abstractions are present.
Re:American Pride Falls to 25-Year Record Low on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @09:50AM (#48732762)
This is conflating so many different concepts under one idea of pride. Come on. Yes, humility is also important but it’s a false dilemma and meaningless.
