It was a joke, son
Everyone should read "Spaces of Global Capitalism: A Theory of Uneven Geographical Development" by David Harvey. Written 25 years ago, it accurately predicts the data center trend - geography usurped by capatalistic growth.

As did the reMarkable support for that device...

LOL - agreed. I was a bit shocked by the title being the type that gets bonded with my devices. I still use my Windows laptop from 2017 and my M1 Macbook Pro from 2021 daily. Additionally, my Kindles are from 2010.
"The US wants China to stop distilling its AI models, stop smuggling its chips, and stop fine-tuning its open-source models for military use." Sure - you tell'em USA!...as if China is going to stop.

Your group looking for any other position types besides Applied Scientists?
Re:"We'll call it AI to sell it, Machine Learning to Build it" on Wednesday October 11, 2023 @12:53PM (#37846954)
Right! And what it 'really' is will push the philosophical 'hard problem' of consciousness. Will we be able to penetrate something human-like to know if it is conscious?
Re:"We'll call it AI to sell it, Machine Learning to Build it" on Wednesday October 11, 2023 @09:50AM (#37844377)
If it passes the Turing Test then it's just semantics after that - linear regression gains artificial consciousness
I think the term "world model" is a highly overloaded term. What does it really mean in your opinion?
Finally! Vindication for me being a vampire!
You must mean the new Albert Clippy!
Re:Ask HN: Is Google Down for You? on Tuesday April 18, 2023 @09:17PM (#35622991)
Verizon network outages all over this afternoon - maybe that?
Agreed. You simply cannot pause an emerging technology as powerful as AI. We all know the US Government will not stop especially within defense circles much less other countries. This same dilemma has appeared multiple times and just has to evolve through learning and development.
Agreed - I have the very same issue as well. Google Keep is my goto mobile app for most of my note capture just due to its speed and ease of use. Now I have a few github utilities to download my Keep notes to markdown for Obsidian use later - but that isn't really ideal yet.
I just thought it seemed a bit odd to me to have the project tied to large organizations in China so much. I’m not saying to “buy American” but I do think it’s reasonable to be perplexed.
Why is this project tied so specifically to China? Honest question here....

Too much emphasis on YC - there are others
Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2018? on Tuesday December 18, 2018 @05:17PM (#18711116)
Good list! You should add Orientalism by Said and Open Society and Its Enemies by Popper - both classics!
Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2018? on Tuesday December 18, 2018 @05:10PM (#18711063)
Good list - except for Phoenix Project - sorry you had to read it - utter insipid crap.

Great picks!
Re:China’s dark matter space probe detects tantalizing signal on Saturday December 02, 2017 @08:54PM (#15835568)
Hmmmm...scientists are still debating whether the signal is dark matter or pulsar output (high energies create electron-positron pairs). I see this recent Chinese paper debating if DAMPE can even distinguish dark matter positron remnants or pulsars - Wang et al. (2017) say this - "For the pulsar case, the latest Fermi-LAT anisotropy limits have also been taken into account. Our results show that the cases of DM annihilations to τ+τ− and all charged leptons are difficult to be distinguished from the pulsar cases by the current experiments and DAMPE"
Re:What, exactly, do philosophers do? on Tuesday September 19, 2017 @10:11AM (#15284742)
Philosophy Degrees: Reid Hoffman - LinkedIn, Stewart Butterfield - Flickr, Peter Thiel - PayPal, Patrick Byrne - Overstock, Carly Fiorina - you all know her, Carl Icahn - Icahn Enterprises, Sheila Bair - FDIC, George Soros - Soros Funds, Herbert Allison Jr. - Fannie Mae, Gerald Levin - Time Warner, Ethan Cohen - you all know him, Rupert Murdoch, Rashida Jones, Philip Glass, etc... ...of course - just statistical - there's always some list for other degrees too....
Re:What, exactly, do philosophers do? on Monday September 18, 2017 @04:16PM (#15279134)
Agreed that 'state of the art' is the wrong question - but, it is worth watching David Chalmers challenge progress in philosophy (bear with the first 20 minutes or so - it gets better). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUfz6oahp2Q

Re:Particle detector finds hints of dark matter in space on Friday September 19, 2014 @05:12PM (#8342514)
I think as the earlier comment pointed out this really was about the additional data from AMS that helps refine and/or add confidence to the possible theories - some of which are dark matter related and some which are not. Unfortunately, the article title was blatantly incorrect.
Re:Particle detector finds hints of dark matter in space on Friday September 19, 2014 @11:26AM (#8340908)
Excellent callout and my mistake missing the point on the wider energy range and the rollover. Thank you! The additional data will help the determination of dark matter vs. pulsars as the positron source.

"To determine if the observed new phenomenon is from dark matter or from astrophysical sources such as pulsars, AMS is now[sic] making measurements to determine the rate of decrease at which the positron fraction falls beyond the turning point (item 5), as well as to determine the antiproton fraction (the ratio of antiprotons to protons plus anti-protons). These will be reported in future publications."

Re:Particle detector finds hints of dark matter in space on Friday September 19, 2014 @10:30AM (#8340638)
Very strange to see this article posted now. This news from the AMS is over a year old. And clearly, there is considerable debate whether the positron excess is from dark matter particle annihilation or from nearby pulsars. There are many papers on the subject - here is just one example that explains some of the issues - http://arxiv.org/pdf/1304.1840.pdf (PS - I am an astronomy graduate student).
