I'd take this person's opinion with a heavy grain of salt. They didn't sell to EA to grow, but because BioWare was failing. AI recreating games has nothing to do with BioWare being shut down and is therefore a red herring. The execs might not know how to make games, but BioWare has both been extremely slow at developing games and put out multiple failures in a row.

Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:02AM (#50163227)
OpenAL was terrible on Android as well, but audio on Android was terrible at the time anyway. Game developers had issues like explosion sounds playing half a second after the visual effect. Google made excuses for years saying it’s not their fault somehow, while it was fine on iOS, before they eventually fixed a scheduling mistake they introduced.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:39AM (#50150715)
I find this pattern so funny. Khronos and Microsoft anticipate 20 graphics vendor APIs, so 2 portable standard APIs are created. The common denominator problem stifles competition and leads to unexposed functionality some vendors have or won’t bother developing because of it. It also introduces a lot of implementation problems that would not exist with vendor-specific APIs. How many vendor APIs were there really back then and now? A handful across industries, less on specific platforms.

I see this pattern again and again. For example in the manufacturing industry there’s a network standard OPC UA. It sucks. It tries to extend to absolutely everything (wtf database interfaces?). Like you say, the “integrators” just write a middle layer and move on with their days.

Re:The game industry is broken – can we fix it? on Sunday October 18, 2026 @08:21AM (#50140452)
Original classic WoW lasted longer than the expansions. WoW Forever is a horizontal expansion instead of a superseding one.

LoL classic is indeed a bad example, but that’s because Riot didn’t deliver and also importantly used a version that was not at the height of LoL’s success. You can use Runescape as a better example for the return to classic working.

Other mismanaged classic games are the Warcraft 3 remake. So classic does not guarantee success, it has to be done properly.

Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:22AM (#50118728)
His definition of software rendering is

In a software-rendered game, the CPU draws every pixel. There’s no 3D card involved: the game works out each frame in its own code and writes it straight to video memory
I think that’s the standard definition. If you mean that this style can be achieved with graphics hardware then that’s a different argument and why your first sentence is deemed contentious
Your category() function contains the branch. So you pushed the condition up, and later loop through each bucket with its corresponding function. So you pushed the loops down. This is typical data oriented programming.
It’s not a consistent change, but for example programs like notepad couldn’t handle \n, but do accept it now. Visual Studio expects certain file types to use \r\n, but accepts others like .gitignore using \n.

Same thing for \ and / in path separators: Microsoft never made a consistent push for it, and it depends on the application.

Somali did much more than just disrespect, e.g. deepfake pornography of women he met, trespassing onto construction sites, throwing food in businesses.
Re:Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @12:36PM (#49629265)
Leetcode is about learning an algorithm/data structure. Programming in general is about much more than that. Knowing minimax and ring buffers doesn’t help much in knowing whether what your LLM does makes sense. For that you need to work on more open ended questions.
Re:Why do so many tools have JSON config files? on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:59AM (#49576104)
I looked them up, and they’re not lisp (or s-expressions)

    SERVER=(DESCRIPTION (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MyHost)(PORT=MyPort))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=MyOracleSID)));uid=myUsername;pwd=myPassword;

Very telling that you think it’s comparable. An engineering manager doesn’t manage a random bunch of international people, but a smaller group of (company culturally) vetted people.

I unfortunately agree, this reads heavily AI generated. I was not able to follow the reasoning, e.g. management of backward and forward compatibility seems broken.
Re:Faster Than Ninja on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @11:38AM (#49184414)
Always glad to see authors on here. Thanks for your insight!

Since they had to rewrite the build file for their program I also assume that something is missing. Didn’t see any mention of verifying that.

I also really didn’t like their denigrating tone. It totally turns me off trying build2, because it seems they don’t understand the point of separating build stages like environment setup (getting dependencies), configure, native build, cross build, packaging. I am a very happy ninja user instead of a batteries-included solution because it does its one job well and can be used very flexibly. I personally detest cmake, so I use nix + own configure script + ninja.

The blog is also wrong about ninja being unable to call configure, but I intentionally don’t want that (I want the build stages to communicate in one direction for sanity).

Re:More German than many Germans on Monday August 03, 2026 @09:36AM (#49155644)
You don’t know Germany, you know Berlin.

You don’t have insight into German lifestyle, you have insight into that one woman’s family’s lifestyle (and only less than a year, you’re not a family member at that point).

Out of the last 28 years they have spent only 4 in the opposition. SPD together with CDU are the two major parties shaping Germany. As opposition they also always had a majority veto right.

Architecture has always been a great fit for VR. Game engines like unreal engine integrate both VR and architecture software for example.
Selling skins is what they used to do originally, which was their edge over their competition that didn’t want to do F2P. Nowadays they engage in gacha, with skins effectively costing hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Backed by statistics, champs that receive new skins are also always guaranteed to be strong or even overpowered for a while (rebalanced before any tournament patch).

Re:Writing a (valid) C program without main() on Saturday July 25, 2026 @12:50PM (#49049192)
Note that this is not a “valid” C program according to the standard. The standard allows for freestanding and hosted environments. Freestanding allows for the entry point to be called something else than main, but there are other requirements. See section 4 and 5 of a draft if interested.
It’s a common thing. For example the chess event in World of Warcraft Burning Crusade was done by placing invisible bunnies in a grid for the chess figures to target and move towards.

The submitter isn’t the library author.
I also stopped reading the article there. This is major version 4 of a library about providing higher level db actions, i.e. transactions are paramount to make them atomic
