Re:Childhood Computing on Sunday May 24, 2026 @01:16PM (#48259138)
My childhood was PCBoard, POV-Ray, then later Lightwave, 3ds Max, Bryce. WADs, Hammer Editor, GTkRadiant, both of the scenes. Sierra and Lucasarts games... Turbo Pascal!
Re:GitHub is having issues now on Monday April 27, 2026 @03:11PM (#47925930)
Made my own github alternative ways back. Kind of like cgit on steroids. I only use github for free backup now.
I'm building a C++ game engine from scratch with CC. Renderer is Vulkan, no wrappers. Around 30k LoC now, quite a ways to go yet, but CC has been doing fine overall. Of course "he" runs in circles sometimes, but I always manage to nudge him back on track.
Comments from your "preferred commenter" are like songs from your favorite band, sometimes they disappoint you.
Re:I’m joining OpenAI on Monday February 16, 2026 @01:48AM (#47031682)
Right. Shopify apps, too, is a gold mine.

It's funny to me how still so many don't realize you don't get hired for the best positions for being a 10x programmer who excels at hackerrank, you get hired for your proven ability to deliver useful products. Creativity, drive, vision, whatever. Code is a means to an end. If you're the type of programmer who thinks of yourself as just a programmer, and take pride in your secure code, ability to optimize functions and algorithms, you're exactly the kind of programmer AI will replace.

Quality of code has never had anything to do with which products are successful. I bet both youtube and facebook's codebase is a tangled mess.

Compared to Microsoft Office suite, Libre suite is definitely not slow.
Re:I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too on Monday January 12, 2026 @05:07AM (#46586365)
Davinci Resolve for video editing. It's what I'd use on Windows, as well.

Lightroom vs Gimp does not make sense, should be Gimp vs Photoshop if anything.

For photos you can use digikam + darktable/rawtherapee.

Re:I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too on Monday January 12, 2026 @05:06AM (#46586354)
Which two specific functions?
Re:I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too on Monday January 12, 2026 @04:59AM (#46586311)
Compared to which software? Ableton? Reaper? Did you use RT kernel? JACK or ALSA? Pipewire?

DE will also affect performance.

Re:Claude Code CLI Broken on Saturday January 10, 2026 @04:21AM (#46564154)
I read or heard somewhere at least 80% of CC is written by CC and Aider (before CC was mature enough)
C posts still make the front page here and there
Re:Cloudflare is down on Friday December 05, 2025 @04:04AM (#46158440)
Cloudflare uptime has worsened a lot lately, AI coding has increased exponentially, hmm
Re:Cloudflare is down on Friday December 05, 2025 @04:01AM (#46158396)
This is getting embarrassing.
Re:Claude.ai Is Down on Friday October 31, 2025 @06:13AM (#45770305)
* Sublimating...
Re:Claude.ai Is Down on Friday October 31, 2025 @06:13AM (#45770303)
Point me your repo, I want to see if AI can improve it.
Re:Claude.ai Is Down on Friday October 31, 2025 @06:12AM (#45770295)
It's a reminder to not rely on a single service.

Logic not strong in this thread.

Re:Claude.ai Is Down on Friday October 31, 2025 @06:05AM (#45770248)
Doubtful all services are ever down simultaneously, either way:

What do devs do when Github or Gitlab is down?

AWS? GCP? Azure?

Or whatever Atlassian product they're using.

Plus, most devs do a bit more than just produce lines of code.

The title here is beginner developer, but the article states non-developer.

Nevertheless, dev docs are usually written for reasonably experienced developers, but new to specific framework/library.

These docs would be too long-winded if they were to account for non-devs/complete beginners.

Please, don't cater to that audience in your docs.

Re:Mozilla owns "information you input through Firefox" on Thursday February 27, 2025 @09:46PM (#43201169)
Switched to Vivaldi long time ago. For reasons like this, ToS, Mozilla changing their mission, etc.

Vivaldi respects your privacy, supports Chrome extensions, and all the customizations you'd ever need.

Re:Half-Life on Monday February 24, 2025 @01:30AM (#43156403)
Hah, that reminds me how I started leakfree.org, where Black Mesa got started. That was a long time ago.
Re:What Is Toybox? on Thursday July 25, 2024 @06:55AM (#41067086)
The explanation is in the first sentence. How much clearer could he be?
Re:The Guide to Git I Never Had on Saturday May 11, 2024 @02:17AM (#40326357)
What's the other version control you use?
Re:Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora on Saturday May 11, 2024 @02:08AM (#40326332)
Here's a few crappy phone pics from near Oslo on a night (evening, around 19 I think) it was very visible with the naked eye. 0.5 seconds exposure.

Re:Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora on Saturday May 11, 2024 @02:04AM (#40326311)
Come to the arctic circle during polar night, then you will see impressive.
Re:Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora on Saturday May 11, 2024 @02:01AM (#40326299)
Our eyes definitely do not see "pretty much without the color". Born and raised in Norway I've watched more aurora borealis than I care to count. On many occassions you could see all kinds of colors and dancing lights with the naked eye, very strong and vivid, too. Important to be in a dark environment without light pollution. At the arctic circle during polar night you will see northern lights that almost match the most stunning photos you have seen.
Re:The Guide to Git I Never Had on Sunday May 05, 2024 @11:22AM (#40265528)
I don't get the "git has horrible user interface" crowd. Never had a problem understanding git or its commands. It's probably the least complicated tool in my box, and the one that has given me least trouble.

What exactly is so bad about the ux?

Are the ones having trouble people that's never used another CVS? Is it CLI aversion?

Re:Pyinfra: Automate Infrastructure Using Python on Tuesday April 30, 2024 @02:27PM (#40214413)
Is performance better than Ansible? I have used Ansible extensively and find it excruciatingly slow.
Re:What contributing to Open-source is, and what it isn't on Saturday April 27, 2024 @03:34PM (#40182749)
It's more that I don't agree with what he considers the four or so proper ways to contribute. I also know of longstanding and highly valued contributors who started out in ways the author disapproves of.

Another red flag is "I use Arch Linux, btw"
