My parents had a set of encyclopedia Britannica from 1987. Problem is they got it for me in 1997.
Re:Why Perl? on Thursday April 20, 2023 @05:59PM (#35647010)
PACER -- the system that runs electronic dockets and service for all federal courts runs on perl.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I prefer my OS put several hurdles in front of a key logging app.

This is what passes as legal scholarship these days thanks to the Federalist Society.
Is daylight savings time such a hassle? All my clocks update themselves. I hardly ever notice the difference.
Pretty sure this was the plot of Spider-Man 2 (Raimi Trilogy).
Re:Why isn't there a universal data format for résumés? on Sunday January 16, 2022 @08:45PM (#29962472)
Because in certain fields, the design of the resume is just as important as the content of the resume.

As if access to opportunities has nothing to do with race.

Re:PACER Fetch APIs on Thursday November 07, 2019 @08:42AM (#21473059)
The RECAP project is a great project, and highly recommend its use.

But PACER charges 10 cents per page for access and I don't have a problem with that. These fees keep the federal courts open to do vital business when Congress decides it's a good time for a shutdown. Any complaints re: PACER fees should be directed to Congress.

Re:Should lawyers learn to code? Arguments for and against on Wednesday August 07, 2019 @05:21PM (#20639226)
I'm a lawyer who can code. Here's how I have used that skill:

* MS VB Macros for automating how my documents look and what they do

* Basic sync scripts that sync folders locally > server and vice versa

* An app to keep track of the my frequently used rules: trial rules dot com

* A website to keep track of various developments in my area law [internal to my firm]

* A PDF app that automates basic tasks [batestamping, adding exhibit stickers, etc]

Edit for spelling/formatting.

Medical malpractice lawyer here:

Setting aside the sensational headline, this seems a reasonable result. According to the article, the hospitalist who did not see the patient decided to (a) opine that her symptoms were due to some other, incorrect cause; and (b) override the decision of the doctor who actually saw the patient. Why shouldn't this individual have accountability for the harm that he caused? He wants to make life or death decisions without so much as examining the patient and he doesn't want to be held responsible for those decisions. How is that fair?

The lens is not very sharp.
I like the Touch Bar. I use it all the time contextually in whatever app I am using. For regular, non-tech users, I've noticed that they use it too. It allows those folks to quickly access options that were previously keyboard shortcuts.

As an aside, I also enjoy the quick access to emojis.‍

That's common knowledge even in Texas.
So — if you log out and log in as root without a password (EEK!), you can set your own password as root. Once you do, Mac os will no longer bypass the password.
Re:The Best Podcasting Equipment for a New Podcaster on Wednesday October 11, 2017 @06:06PM (#15453935)
My co-host wrote a better guide.[1] Can say there's some overlap, but I definitely think my co-hosts pick of mic is way better, after having experience with both.

Re:Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often on Friday December 30, 2016 @11:21AM (#13285111)
I have duckduckgo set on my phone. Recently, I started discovering that when I clicked a google search result link on my phone, google would mask that link and wouldn't actually take me to the webpage. Annoying. DDGo doesn't do this.
Re:GIMP development - What’s the point? on Friday September 23, 2016 @09:56AM (#12564618)
the point of developing gimp is to eventually change its name.
