Not a big deal, because they tend to be trusted eventually by the search engines and the language models, though I don't trust much the latter to tbh.

US is the same country that allows a practical monopoly of NVIDIA on GPUs and Intel on CPU (or at least an oligopoly), and then pretend "foreigners are out to get us". It gets one to know one.

It will happen, as long as people don't get language models are a glorified google search. They predict what they should say based on what they read.
If what the read is nonsense then they will predict nonsense.
They are basically glorified parrots.

If everything you do starts by asking an LLM, then you start with superficial research, because frankly it was never anything better than a fancy google search.

Re:Just Disconnect the Internet

Give an example of software that exists for decades and never had an exploit. You might say basic OS tools. The OS might not be secure then; giving internet terminals to everyone in the world is just a stupid oversight; the best is probably a combination of both having internet when needed but most access to it to be through an extremely thick layer of firewalls (e.g. only system administrators updating stuff should be exposed to the internet for software involving airport security).

Stuff like that are mainly the realm of the compiler. Unless you talk chiefly to compiler programmers. Exception is writing special asm code of course or other adjacent things.

no sure if the author has some ..dunning-kruger there.

yep, this current meme of "AI" is stupid. it's only a statistical analysis of old data; a glorified google search; most of the time I hear "but it found stuff better than googling" it can be explained by a simple "you didn't exactly google it the right way [or generally look for info elsewhere another way]".

It's true that the lack of choices back then (other that spezzit) contributed majorly to the migration. But I also think a new paradigm entirely is needed for social media after the fiasco of all the centralized ones, decentralized social media.
Re:Before Reddit and Digg, there was Fark. Then a user-hostile redesig...
on Monday June 12, 2023 @05:09AM (#36290479)
I think most people aren't aware that during the digg exodus there were also not that many alternatives or at least not that many alternatives people were aware of, so that played a major role because it was a very easy choice when there were not that many choices.
But I also think a new technological paradigm for social media is needed entirely (decentralized).
Re:Reddit Strike Has Started
on Monday June 12, 2023 @05:07AM (#36290466)
I don't think it's the viability itself. The many options also play a role: back at the digg exodus reddit was the only alternative to a large extend or at least the only alternative most people were aware of.
But a new platform technology paradigm entirely might be better (decentralized).

it does something more superficially apparent to naive people. decentralization is extremely more important. it will be one of the main ingredients of direct democracy.

It's just a glorified google search. You'd save more time googling what you need and picking 2-3 results to read briefly.
People have no clue human intelligence has very little to do with "statistical analysis of old data".

a lot about the nonsensical lust for 'ai' will be solved, once people realize it's not literal human 'intelligence', it's just a collage of data based on statistical analysis of past data and a prompt.
Re:What Happens When a CPU Starts

the "whole computer" is also thought to start on the memory, because you can have memory on a computer and a manual operator of it, but you can't have a computer with an operator of it and no memory.
