Eh, I dunno -- I have an LLM write a feature, then create a PR. Subsequent bot reviews list tons of "problems" (some relevant, others not so much). Why couldn't the first LLM get it right the first time?
It was when I saw Derek Yu and Alec Holowka release Aquaria that I realized there's no gatekeeping anymore. Make your game.

However, if you're looking to be part of a larger team, that is indeed a challenge with the limitations you mentioned.

I can also recommend "Steve Jobs and the NeXT big thing" by Randall Stross.
Well, Freud was right.

I have fond memories of running https://www.windowmaker.org/ back in the 90s.
The dedicated buttons to move the camera position were a revelation.

This is on my never-ending list of projects...

It's still early days, I'm hesitant to claim the death of software engineering. It's good now because LLMs were all trained on actual human output. One possible future is a slop death spiral.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @02:42PM (#49835072)
Right now KDE is "good enough" that I'm not looking for an alternative.

It's because people who drop $2k on a new phone will also spend $$$ for cool programs to go with it.

No, it was the touchscreen and new UI paradigms.

Seems like China is "skating to where the puck is going."
Re:Making the Internet Boring on Thursday September 03, 2026 @08:34AM (#49549165)
The mantra I've heard is "resist and replace." It's not enough to fight a bad habit, you have to (learn to) replace it with something constructive (i.e. fill the void).

Can you please summarize? I can't handle Burr's strident delivery for more than a few seconds.
I think he's doing fine? Sure, he got out of the video game industry, but that's for young people to burn themselves out.
Sorry, whenever I see a reference to a Mars bar, I have to post https://totl.net/VisibleMars/

"Please allow 4-6 weeks for shipping"
I still have a Facebook account, and will occasionally log in (most recently attempting to sell something on their craigslist equivalent). The default content shown in your "feed" or dashboard is more than 50% engagement bait and/or slop. I attempted to start flagging those posts as "never show me again," but it soon became apparent that it was a Sisyphean task, and I just logged out again.

The naming scheme is too "clever."
Re:Stop Using reCAPTCHA – It's Not a Real Captcha on Thursday July 09, 2026 @11:52AM (#48847970)
> they are about the most difficult to solve captchas I've ever done

Sounds like something a robot would say. Joking aside, I'd rather do a captcha that involves slightly more cognitive effort, rather than get trapped in a reCaptcha loop because I didn't select every last segment of a bicycle.

> Non-replaceable batteries

Most batteries are replaceable. The difference is the level of effort involved.

My take is they didn't optimize for something that a small percentage of users would have problems with.
Yeah, he's definitely the cause of all our past and current problems.
So he has money.

I mean, they're already subsidizing some of the phone services (e.g. maps) that users expect to have.

All the way to the bank, apparently.

Re:Meta's ships facial recognition on smart glasses on Thursday June 04, 2026 @04:48PM (#48404425)
I had the exact same thought about the brand crashing due to association with Facebook. Gotta juice them numbers, I guess.

If it makes someone feel better about themselves, why not?
Welcome to Costco, I love you.
