Re:Where Does All the Cardboard Come From? on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @11:28PM (#33797032)
I wish we could simply return cardboard boxes to e.g. amazon (who drives every neighborhood daily)

and check a box “I prefer recycled boxes” to signal that you don’t mind using a second hand box for your delivery.

For the same reasons why Boeings max8 was unsafe after decades of know-how — Shareholder value.
Totally. There is a stigma against Wordpress for $reasons but compared to all the other platforms listed in this article WP is one of the most aligned with the open web.
Re:Don’t point out something wrong immediately on Thursday February 17, 2022 @05:20PM (#30379467)
I’d even suggest shedding the thought that things can be “wrong”

“Wrong” is a subjective outlook and usually is not a helpful conclusion. Especially if the system is already active.

Better to discuss in detail the benefits of an alternative.

It would change the dynamics of the comment section a lot.

Instead of varied thoughts from many people in replies you’d be much more likely to have the one person arguing their point against replies which is terrible every time I see ot.

Re:Apple’s iPhone has 56% share of the U.S. smartphone market on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @07:15PM (#30354789)
> The difference is really the OS

It’s a huge difference!

I’ve enjoyed seamless upgrades since the iPhone 1 and maintained essentially the same user experience (with minor changes) throughout.

For me stability is the major feature. I want a high quality phone that just works and for my data to carry across devices seamlessly.

Re:Discord is a black hole for information on Saturday February 12, 2022 @09:39AM (#30313111)
Discord channel sprawl is a strange phenomenon. It happens to each server I’ve joined, just gets worse over time.

I think park of the issue is that you cant /part a channel in discord. Every channel you have access is automatically joined, you can’t leave and you have to adjust notifications for each to avoid an overwhelming number of messages.

That and the communities are usually small-ish so you have the same people in most of the channels.

Not sure why this is downvoted. I think one of the (many) reasons to lock the doors is absolutely to keep unauthorized persons out of the room.
Re:Poll: Do you work two or more full-time remote jobs? on Friday February 11, 2022 @06:13PM (#30308149)
It’s the inverse basically. Harder (but still possible) at first but over time a network of trust and reference is built. As opposed to the sneaky/illegal house of cards that could fall at any moment.

A lot of people moonlight as a consultant until they can go full time.

Re:Poll: Do you work two or more full-time remote jobs? on Thursday February 10, 2022 @10:50PM (#30296702)
Not worth it at all IMO. If a person wants to juggle multiple clients to earn more money consulting is a much better approach.
Full self defrosting is right around the corner, if regulators don’t block us it will be GA within a quarter.

They are often referred to as clean NFTs and there are a few marketplaces today, for instance on Tezos there is https://hicetnunc.art/

Oh the irony

Canada. The numerous problems in the US seem to be getting worse and given the option I’d avoid living there.

To the folks saying that web3 is inherently bad, keep in mind that in the 90s the internet was looked at by many as a scary place full of scammers and trolls.

Scams happen because of humans. They are not unique to any particular technology.

Re:Magic Mouse 2 – A Terrible Design (2017) on Saturday January 29, 2022 @11:59PM (#30134181)
The charging port location is horrible but, that’s about the only problem unique to it.

In horizontal workflows like video or audio editing it’s much faster swipe left/right, it becomes natural like a track pad. After working like that a scroll wheel doesn’t cut it anymore.

Alias that to

  -f 720ish
and we’re getting somewhere

Re:USB Type-C finally shows up in power tools on Saturday January 29, 2022 @11:22AM (#30127559)
Hoping this pans out. I was gifted a black and decker drill which has a proprietary shape charge cable, and of course that cable has been misplaced.

A reasonable standard would prevent so much equipment from entering the landfill due to lost/expensive cables.

If it wasn’t already abundantly clear, T takes a silicon valley approach to cars. Ship the MVP and fix bugs later.

Owners are effectively beta testing these cars, and participating in a 3-5 year upgrade cycle (just like a smartphone)

I’ll stick with legacy Japanese auto manufacturers myself, but I don't think many T owners are surprised by reliability issues or expecting much more than a flashy toy out of their vehicle.

Yes, a good commit message should be a few concise paragraphs.

The subject describes what is being affected (think easily greppable keywords)

Then, then body should go into detail about the contents and rationale for the changes.

Use specific terms like “add” or “remove” and avoid subjective descriptions like “prepare” “clean” and “fix”

For example this patch says:

> Clean up consistency of tabs/spaces in include_directories.

Well, what does clean up tabs/spaces actually mean? Saying “remove tabs in favor of spaces” is much clearer.

Re:The rise of the anti-work movement on Thursday January 27, 2022 @09:03AM (#30100673)
> Shortly after the publication of this story on 26 Jan 2022, the r/antiwork subbredit went private

This is the weird part. A mod went on fox news, the interview went sideways, and now the sub is locked.

Isn’t the point of going on the air to promote the sub? Why lock it down right when it has so much new attention?

Me too, the only process I run is init. I don’t even mount a root filesystem. Can’t root without a root is what I always say!

After layering abstractions on top of abstractions, and centralizing onto a few providers it makes sense to simplify and diversify again.

I miss things being presented via their own unique web sites as opposed to “pages” within the current top social network.

Re:Doing too much work on one's own before looping in others on Tuesday January 25, 2022 @05:02PM (#30078749)
My experience is different in that large patch sets usually get a “looks good” while smaller sets get a lot of varied feedback.

Depending on what your personal goals are (and your tolerance for accountability should things go wrong) doing the work up front can be a good approach.

This sounds similar to what is now done to button cell batteries to deter kids from putting them in their mouths.

I’ve never tried tasting either but I wonder if the process is the same?
