"PARIS—For decades, Europeans have been happy to surrender around half of their pay to the state. In exchange, they could expect to retire in their 60s on a relatively comfortable, state-funded pension."

LOL. I argued with lefties about this decades ago and they told me that this was the best system and that the government would take care of them.

The people rioting in the streets should be rioting against socialism and the ability to take the money that would go into taxes and invest in something that will actually provide them with an income.

Instead, they somehow think that this has anything to do with capitalism.

Re:Why Gives Men Money? on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:15PM (#50343867)
Like all activism, it's not about equality, but power. Once women overtook men in colleges, school, and scholarships, there's been no push to make it equal.

I got out of the rat race and started my own company a few years ago because many companies in tech are only hiring women and pushing men out.

One of my favorite photo from a few years ago was from a tech startup with the caption 'diversity'. It was a tech team of all women.

This has nothing to do with the Fedex guy. It's because they aren't allowed to increase the cost of postage due to a federal mandate from decades ago.

"I hope the primary effect of this will be that millions of MAGA votes go uncounted this year and in 2028, because they're the ones that voted for this in the first place."

With all of the cheating and dirty tricks from the Democrats (picking the same name as your opponent to confuse voters), I hope the Democrats never take power again.

"Their ID requirements in Ohio blew back a similar way a few years ago. They made it extremely hard to vote without a driver's license, thinking it'd hit college kids, but it mostly hit retirees that no longer drive."

This just isn't true and has never been true. You can see the requirements here:

https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voter-ID-requirements

I'm not sure when you are talking about, but I have family that's voted in Ohio for decades and this was never an issue.

"It's almost like the republicans would be better off if they paid attention to their constitutional duties instead of just burning things down."

The problem is that Democrats won't do ANYTHING to stop potential cheating and then act dumb when you bring up actual ways to exploit the system.

Example one: Ballot harvesting. Judges allowed ballot harvesting in many states leading up to the Trump election, even though it is illegal. They also ignored signature verification rules during this time.

Example two: Voter ID. In every country in the world, you need ID to vote. Democrats have pushed to completely remove it for years.

Example three: Mail-in voting. Mail-in voting is fine. It should be setup so you need to request it for each election. It's too easy to get ballots for people that never wanted to vote in the first place and send it in. Reddit and social media have made it pretty easy to coordinate with strangers.

Example four: We've had a decade of voting machine vulnerabilities and exploits at Def Con and somehow all of the leading security researchers ignored this and/or removed mention of it on social media after the 2020 election. I witnessed Tweets getting deleted in realtime.

Trump originally proposed sane and reasonable protections, and those were squashed by Democrats. This is the result.

Ignoring these problems isn't helping our Democracy, even though you somehow think it gives your side an advantage.

Re:Ask HN: Deployed vibecoded apps in prod at scale? on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:54AM (#50315760)
Bad. I'm in security and the vibe-coded apps are riddled with security issues.
Re:From blank page to PDF in three steps AI resume builder on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:53AM (#50315750)
I would have a hard time using a service like this. I was able to take a resume in almost any format (even a .pdf where I can't copy the words out of it) and completely rewrite it and output it to another .pdf or .doc file with codex in a few minutes.

I even made a report builder (so I don't have to keep using tokens) Python script where it takes markdown and outputs a professional .pdf/report. This took about 15 minutes and some manual tweaks.

AI will destroy some of these one idea/function based small-sites like this. I think there are many non-tech people that will still get some value out of it, but it's only a matter of time before it's a few clicks away.

Moderators on Reddit are now basically dictators that love to wield their power online, because they most likely have none in their real life.

Some go as far as even seeing other subreddits you post in and if they disagree with it, will insta-ban you.

These silo communities that this creates contributes to the uptick in violence we've been seeing due to mental illness.

Re:Democrats' Secret Effort to Stack Alaska's Ballot on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:55PM (#50311161)
You are seriously ignoring the tactics here?
I would riot too.
When you have a crew of people that are near the top of their game, it's not that hard to manage them.

Strong principals don't work when you have investors to contend with that will kick you out for one bad quarter.

In the age where biology doesn't seem to matter anymore and feelings rule over facts, the Picards of the world will be shunned, censored, and cancelled.

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:07AM (#50287195)
They sold it at a good time. It reminds me of the broadcast.com acquisition.

It made Mark Cuban very wealthy and was worth pennies within a few years.

Now many people might understand what the Right was going through during the Biden administration, when they were censored, spied on, and arrested.

Will this stop? or will we see the same thing again when a Democrat becomes president (with no articles about it and nobody mentioning it)?

http2shell and php2shell are both really difficult to exploit. Not that they aren't serious (and should be patched), but it's not the doomsday scenario that the news makes it out to be.

I'm wondering if this is the same.

This is my nightmare.
Re:Rest of World faces prospect of shutting down on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:55PM (#50253798)
"The six-year-old digital publication has seen the social and web search traffic on which it depends evaporate. "

I learned a long time ago that you can't rely on search engines or ad revenue for a long-term business. One algorithm change, and your business is gone. This happened to me a decade or so ago. Youtubers run into this all the time.

Most online publications are funded by billionaires.

Re:AI wasn't overhyped. Almost everyone underestimated it on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:51PM (#50253763)
"Burnout stems from mismatches in workload, control, reward, community, fairness and values; not from any single task such as paperwork."

Do you think you will ever get this with a government-run healthcare system?

Until you start getting taxed.
This is the goal of all government regulations and it's always resulted in higher prices and near monopolies dominating the market.

Yet, so many Democrats support it.

Re:Surprising gender biases in GPT (2024) on Sunday October 25, 2026 @07:12PM (#50236978)
"ChatGPT associated girls with artistic and emotional options and boys with scientific and technological ones"

Even LLMs can see the truth. I'm a consultant and work with lots of companies and have seen this pretty consistently.

Most women usually don't want to be in front of a computer all day as a coder or anything that touches technology and would rather manage.

All HR departments are mostly led by women, which is all about socializing, relationships, and emotion. There are exceptions, of course.

My cousn's daughter is in a robotics class at school. All smart girls (good in math and science). None are interested in building the robot, figuring out how it works, or programming it.

Men and women have different interests. Neither are bad, but we should be honest and stop calling this a 'bias'.

It's because other industries are buying expensive tokens, and there's no real ROI yet.
Re:Internet Security: We're Doomed on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:52PM (#50236857)
While the PHP vulnerability is big news and needs to be patched, it's not that easy to exploit.

All of the POCs I found have hard coded memory addresses for the heap overflow and won't work for many versions out-of-the-box.

When you have a party that destroyed jobs with no alternative, this is the result.
Re:A rising tide raises all rents on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:36PM (#50236723)
Revolutions almost never make it better for everyone. Only the elite group at the top.

Too many people are living a comfortable life and don't seem to realize that commumism doesn't mean you will get to smoke weed and play video games all day.

You will be assigned a job and forced to work.

The wealthy pay the vast majority of taxes in the US by almost every metric.

We should have plenty of money to pay for services, but government officials are never held accountable when they piss it away on inefficient programs and sevices.

Healthcare.gov cost a billion dollars. I've managed projects much bigger and more complex for a fraction of this. Nobody in the tech community talks about this for some reason....

The blame is always shifted to the wealthy by these politicians. It still won't fix the problem, if we don't have a better way to spend it.

Re:In the world AI, will individual apps become obsolete? on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:55PM (#50217361)
This will only work if tokens are close to free or you can run close to frontier models on your own hardware.

Also, prompting is like using the command line to some degree. Most people need something visual.

Re:AI devours a fifth of companies' IT budgets on Friday October 23, 2026 @07:47PM (#50216921)
This makes sense. It will take awhile before business processes have AI fully integrated.
Liberalism is all about government control. Many here seem to think you can have one without the other, and it's just not possible.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @07:27PM (#50216766)
Many people benefit from Apple's closed system. Especially when you look at the malware and viruses that don't exist, because it's so protected.

It's a net benefit for society, even if you don't personally like it.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @07:23PM (#50216729)
It's called freedom. Many people choose Apple products, even if you personally don't like it.

This is also the same strategy as activists: use authoritarianism to get your way, instead of a real solution.

It really tells me who I never want with any sort of power over my life.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @07:19PM (#50216697)
