Cool way to use old hardware but I can't stand reading AI blog posts. Just write it yourself so the visitor doesn't feel like they're just reading another agent's thoughts.
I've been self-hosting for 20 years now - a few years ago I switched to using Mail-in-a-Box (
https://mailinabox.email/) which makes management a lot easier than configuring each service manually.
It definitely requires some effort but once you've got it up and running it's pretty hands off. The only issues I've ever had are expiring certs but I've fixed that by configuring auto-renewals and it's all good now.
Ensuring your source IP isn't blacklisted is probably the single most important factor. I had to request a new IP from Linode where my server runs as the one it was originally assigned had a bad reputation.
Um, what? It's literally what we're talking about haha
We're using the highest tier Postgres instance at my work for one of our legacy Heroku apps and it costs thousands over what we'd pay for the equivalent on AWS directly.
I've got the color/RGB Philips Hue bulbs indoors and I find you can change them to a nice warm yellow color which is nice but they also can be changed to act like a candle.
These are Christmas light specific - but Tru-Tone makes LED bulbs that look like filament bulbs: https://www.tru-tone.com/. I've just ordered some so I'll update this comment once I've had a look.
The claw of capitalism will always tighten its grip. Any software company that goes public has this problem it seems.
Why not use a paper towel?
"Sure, you can overclock that CPU, but why?"
I dislike questions that challenge pushing the limits of our existence.
This was great, thanks for sharing. I really do love the "warmth" provided by VHS, but I often wonder if that is just nostalgia from using a technology we grew up with?
I've been getting into old technology the past few years and a Panasonic AG-170 VHS Reporter camera was one item I had picked up. I've recorded a few social gatherings and trips with friends so far and plan to edit them into a 80s/90s styled montage. However, my camera recently stopped recording any video or audio with the viewfinder showing a black/blank image, which is a real bummer. I imagine there is an electronic component inside that may have failed.
Does anyone know of any forums where VHS enthusiasts gather? I'd love to dig around to see if I can find any resources for diagnosing and repairing this camera on my own. Unfortunately VHS repair shops are quite rare, if not nearly extinct in 2023.
I think mentioning that you're paying the cheque is tacky. Just invite them and pay for their meal silently as a nice surprise to the end of dinner.
I wish Valve would try to build a desktop OS. They surely have the bankroll to do something like that.
I'm curious what percentage of Windows users are only using it for gaming? Are there any stats on that?
Would be more interesting to include the numbers prior to the pandemic (which had an abnormal surge in hiring).
Are you Canadian? I had previously looked into heat pumps for cold climates and thought that it was economically not a great investment and required a gas back-up.
Ever since I left all social media and blocked (as much as I could) trackers in my apps and networks, I rarely see any targeted ads now.
I now see completely irrelevant ads for things like stair lifts for the elderly. I quite enjoy not being targeted.
AFAIK they can't legally claim your donation as a tax write-off, at least in Canada.
My spending on Amazon has diminished significantly due to the flood of Chinese copycat brands and products on there.
Wish there was a way to filter out products by their country of origin. Is there any alternative out there?
When visiting this link does anyone else just get a blank white page in Firefox?
Highly recommend checking out KEDA (
https://keda.sh/) which leverages HPAs under the hood.
If you need to scale based on some internal data like database records, Redis queues, Kafka topics, etc. KEDA scalers are incredibly easy to hook up to do that. You could even write your own custom scaler if there is no existing one for your type of event data source.
When you're the only person to answer to for your physical health, it can be very easy to let yourself go. Having external accountability is a fantastic driver for improving physical health.
I highly enjoyed reading this book - does anyone else have recommendations for similar reads?
Masters of Doom was another great one.
Perhaps the money can be pledged and held in escrow either until someone accepts the work for scheduling or it gets withdrawn by the pledgee due to inaction.
Oof - you are correct. I think I should have slept a couple more hours last night.
I wish there was a better alternative. I know Jellyfin is there, but I can't get behind the .NET framework it's written in.
I just learned that in 2021, Plex was acquired by Rockwell Automation. Had no idea that had happened. That seems like an odd company for them to acquire.
They're B2B so not really something the average person would hear about or even be interested in.
I've stopped shopping on Amazon because of the hundreds of Chinese brands for the exact same product.
I agree, not all societies are like this. However, an argument can be made that it is inherent because it is dominant.
I think we as a species must rid ourselves of selfishness and greed. We need to think beyond the timelines of our own existence.
Alas, I fear those traits may be too deeply rooted in our our own nature and nurture that our demise may be inevitable.
Paywalled so I can't read the article but I'll throw in some related thoughts.
I recall listening to the radio and hearing about the ways in which we view time can sometimes alter how we use it. A man was asked how many years he thinks he has left to spend with his parents and he said something along the lines of 10 years. He was then asked how many times a year he spends with his parents and I think he said around 3-4 or so get-togethers.
So at that rate, you only have 30-40 get-togethers left with your family. Which really changed the man's perspective on how much time he really had left based on how he was using it. Just some food for thought on how we use time with others.
