Hi Tim. I liked your work with dart/flutter. Are you guys working on overhauling Xcode? The DX is atrocious.
Re:The Debian Publicity Team will no longer post on X/Twitter on Wednesday January 29, 2025 @12:55PM (#42868556)
That's a bummer.
I made it he mistake of using the yt app and I wanted to throw the phone away. Never again.
I have a kid (5~8 range) and what we did was to limit PC consumption, avoid getting our kid a tablet and cellphone. It has been really good and my kid still has his/her innocence intact. Hopefully this will continue until adolescence. We're also trying to put the kid in different outdoor activities as well as playing with him/her (chess, uno, etc...). It's not easy, but is doable.
Re:How to delete your Facebook account on Thursday January 09, 2025 @07:05PM (#42651141)
I deleted my FB account six years ago, and I don't miss it. I use Twitter, Reddit, and occasionally IG (I don't post anything there).
You can go further: Which business will bet its entire existence, let alone finances, to an "AI" (Companies are literally writing "don't rely on X LLM outputs as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice"?

Re:1M people have joined Bluesky in the last day on Friday November 15, 2024 @02:14PM (#42149913)
This is interesting. We know twitter was left-wing all the way to the top and after Elon took and put both sides on equal footing, it suddenly became right-wing? C'mon man. Media is run by the left.

The EU is increasingly trying to suppress dissenting voices on one side of the aisle. We'll see how long people will put off with that before things get out of control.

South America is starting to divide itself between socialism (Venezuela, Bolivia, etc...) and center-right ideas (Argentina, El salvador). Time will tell.

Re:1M people have joined Bluesky in the last day on Friday November 15, 2024 @10:31AM (#42147785)
What I'm seeing here is lots of echo chambers getting created as we speak. Threads, bluesky, etc... I don't use Threads because I don't use Instagram that much. Everyone will have their safe space and the world will continue without any issues whatsoever. Heck, there are countries where Facebook is the "internet". Other than the left (US, UK, Canada?) posting on any of those platforms, nothing will change for the rest of the world and each one will capture what the other side said and post it on the platform.

According to Ilya Sutskever: "results from scaling up pre-training have plateaued". https://www.reuters.com/technology/artificial-intelligence/o...

They're trying other techniques to improve what we already have atm, but we're almost at the limit of its capabilities.

Re:Visualizing 13M Bluesky users on Wednesday November 13, 2024 @06:47PM (#42131508)
I beg to differ. It's important because I can equally see both left and right posts. If you consume more left-leaning posts, you'll get more of that content. My feed is Web Dev, Machine Learning, Mobile Dev, etc... you have to be hardcore right to get anything related to that (same goes if you consume left-leaning posts).

In the end, people will choose their echo chamber no matter if they know it's an echo chamber. I try to be as impartial as possible. I use Twitter, Reddit (specific subs), and occasionally, IG. I have a tiktok acct but I rarely use it.

Re:Visualizing 13M Bluesky users on Wednesday November 13, 2024 @05:26PM (#42130844)
Musk was left-leaning not so long ago. I follow left-leaning media (WYT, Pod Save America, etc...) and right-leaning media (Ben Shapiro, etc...) equally and see both posts without any issues. If the left-leaning people leave Twitter, the new platform will become an echo chamber the same way Reddit, gab, parler, and Truth Social are.
Re:Visualizing 13M Bluesky users on Wednesday November 13, 2024 @12:09PM (#42127884)
To be honest, bluesky will become the left version of "Truth social". That's good for them in the long run (ad money) but it'll be another echo chamber. I follow both left leaning and right leaning people on Twitter and I don't see the "balance" going one way or another.

The other thing is the reach. Twitter, Fb, Instagram are global brands. It'll be really, and I mean really difficult to move the rest of the world to other platforms (TikTok is the exception because they went with video).

In defense of firebase, their tenant solution is the best I've ever seen (at least so far).
I think... I think the op was being sarcastic.
While we're at it, we need to break Microsoft and Amazon asap. I don't know how Microsoft is not up for discussion when it's a behemoth (GitHub, LinkedIn, Azure, Windows, Office, etc.). The same applies for Amazon.
Re:DOJ may want to break up Google on Tuesday August 13, 2024 @09:46PM (#41241774)
Good initiative but only Google? Here is but a concise list of companies that are in desperate need to be broken apart to foster innovation and entrepreneurship:

Amazon: E-commerce, AWS, Twitch.

Microsoft: Azure, Office, Windows, Linkedin.

Facebook: Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook.

Re:Airbnb shares drop 12% as company flags weakening US demand on Wednesday August 07, 2024 @09:31AM (#41181279)
Interesting. We're not taking into account the intangibles, aka people's perception. People are angrier than usual since they feel (and rightly so) they're being displaced from their places. Look at Portugal and Spain.
Re:Google Chrome warns uBlock Origin may soon be disabled on Saturday August 03, 2024 @07:13AM (#41145908)
hear, hear! I've been using Brave for 2 years now and I can't complain. I don't remember the last time I saw any ads. I have ublock installed too just to add to the formula (no ads whatsoever).
Hear, hear! There are no outages, hacks, etc... when using cash. I use credit cards as much as anyone else but also use money at every opportunity. Shops need to use collect on delivery as a form of payment too.
It seems the mayor of Barcelona is banning short-term rentals to appease the locals. From the looks of it, the discomfort started when locals couldn't afford to live in their city. Portugal also banned new Airbnbs. The same goes for other cities around the globe.

Sooner or later, this trend will ramp up globally since the premise was to rent a spare room, not the whole thing. Tourism will survive since Barcelona has been a hot destination long before short-term rentals.

"...forest for the trees" my friend. "...Forest for the trees...".
What happened in Canada strongly indicates that a cashless society is as bad as it sounds. China did it and, well, we don't have to guess what happened next. Canada, a Western country with lots of "freedoms", did what it did because those truckers, etc... were a "threat" to "democracy".

I advocate for every form of payment to be conducted without restrictions: cash, deposits, debit, credit, crypto, etc... That's true freedom, not eliminate all options but credit/debit.

$300,000 per car. They're burning billions trying to go mainstream.
Re:Barcelona will eliminate tourist apartments on Friday June 21, 2024 @04:32PM (#40753502)
I'm in favor of Responsible Capitalism. What we're seeing with Airbnb is all but that.
Prob. because their track record is not that transparent, hehe.
