Re:Prospero: A new coding harness for a more civilized age on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:52AM (#50316717)
I don't understand the value proposition. It “works great for local models” (they all do) so you’ve got more RAM than you possibly need for any TUI you might want to run. Are people really fretting over a few MB of memory rather than evaluating these tools on their ergonomics and features?
It kind of doesn’t make sense. Modern google is typically kind of bad at building products and very good at getting them in customer hands. This is the opposite of that.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:05PM (#50278188)
I had to google how the hell you even use these. Apparently “antigravity” is their suite of agentic products and Gemini CLI is dead and it’s the same situation where a google AI plus subscription is only useful inside the antigravity tools. No Pi/OpenCode support at all.

Whatever. Pass.

In other words, “Layoffs soon probably”

Re:Show HN: Corgi, a helpful {agent, terminal} multiplexer on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:56PM (#50217995)
Probably very little. Herdr’s plugin system is quite limited and immature compared to something like Pi. I love herdr and use it daily but it has its limits.

Nice to see people experimenting. I’m not really an early adopter but hopefully the good ideas get picked up by herdr

Re:Docker Is Weird on Thursday October 22, 2026 @11:31PM (#50204184)
That comment invariably comes up because for most people it’s the objectively correct and most well supported option. If you’re asking redditors how to deploy something, you’re precisely the person docker is for.

If you’re curious about FreshRSS please also evaluate miniflux. A fraction of the resource consumption and a better overall experience IMO.

Miniflux homepage really undersells it.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:00PM (#50110986)
> Sonarr, Lidarr, Radarr, etc. Every time I read about setting it up, it just sounds like a resource-intensive mess that’s fundamentally prone to frequent breakage. That’s the opposite of what I’m looking for when choosing self-hosted services.

I just checked on my *arr stack. Sonarr and Radarr idle at 157MB and 159MB of memory and approximately no CPU. Jellyfin currently idles at 330MB. I'm not sure where you got this impression from. I grant these tools are complicated and have somewhat clumsy UX, but they aren't especially heavy to run and are not fragile.

OP, point your :robot: at https://github.com/subdavis/selfhosted/blob/main/docker-comp... and ask for an explanation. It's a single compose file that illustrates how the *arrs, transmission, and jellyfin all work together. I'm sure you can set it up :)

Jensen is wish-casting as hard as anyone has ever casted a wish. That EK show interview made me throw my phone.
He’s a Pro-AI ideologue who engages in the same motivated reasoning he complains about others using. His piece on heat island effects fell over under scrutiny because he just doesn’t have the analytical background to actually do these investigations.
There is sometimes incorrect conflation between what the datacenter is permitted for and what the datacenter actually draws.

> Many articles about current or future AI data centers report the number in the water permit they apply for as the amount of water they actually use day to day. But this almost never happens. [1]

This is from the problematic and often wrong but in this case correct Andy Masley. It's not completely clear to me whether this number is observed usage or a theoretical permitted maximum, in which case the actual usage could be even lower. It could be either.

Re:We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare on Sunday October 04, 2026 @04:24PM (#49957456)
You can think two thoughts at once. I am also a happy cloudflare customer who likes some of their DNS and worker products. But this is in poor taste and deserves the negative reaction.
What is the strict definition of arbitrary you feel we haven’t reached? Right now the limit is scale and complexity, not domain or “type” of application.
Re:SlutCon on Thursday October 01, 2026 @06:38PM (#49927891)
Why is this flagged. It’s interesting, well written, and on topic (AI Safety Sex Cult etc.)
Re:Burning Man Death Rates – A Short Lesson in Statistics on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:32PM (#49913244)
Should people who missed out on formative life experiences all simply accept this? Decide they don’t deserve spiritual nourishment and trudge on with their mediocre lives? Self-actualize in a way you personally would find less cringe? We all get one spin, man.

Even if you’re right, Burning Man strikes me a symptom of a sick and hollow “normal” society.

Re:AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @04:27PM (#49899933)
If everyone loses their jobs there will be no demand for the products and services those workers used to create.

A perfect ouroboros.

Re:Show HN: HN.watch – Videos of all Hacker News posts on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:35PM (#49883254)
Now I want to watch the comments as a video too.
That was totally unacceptable behavior. I support the choice to take down a video depicting blatant sexual harassment of its employees. I also support launching meta into the sun.
Re:Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @04:57PM (#49822486)
In the short term you're probably right. But after a couple of years, complacency will take over and more and more decision making will get ofloaded. I don't think it's out of the question before 2030.
Re:Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @02:47PM (#49820650)
That doesn't mean the humans aren't meat puppets.
For some context, Nancy Pelosi is the rep with the "worst" reputation among partisans for doing improper stock trading while in office.

She has 210 total trades since 2014.

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @09:10AM (#49815541)
Exactly. No way to tell what's behind this. Once waymo has total market dominance and exists in every city, it's hard to imagine them continuing to support local transit. The thing about Embrace, Extend, Extinguish is nobody suspects it during the Embrace phase because good motives and bad motives look exactly the same.
Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:18PM (#49791166)
For what it's worth, I've watched the vote fight on my comment swing back and fourth over the last hour. It got flagged, unflagged, and flagged again. It appears to now be locked and dead.

But I think it represents real malaise in the community. It's not a moderator plot, people here really just don't care and might even support this.

We really are in the minority of opinion for giving a damn about liberal democracy.

Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:39PM (#49790556)
I think I already made my point, but I'll make it again.

Nobody both worked and spent their money to get Trump elected like Musk. 300 million to his 2024 campaign [1]. DOGE. On-stage endorsements. Nobody even came close.

No, other big labs are not "innocent little virgins", but they're not even in the same solar system of harm as Musk. To hand-wave at the differences is to permit them.

Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @10:35AM (#49766904)
Contempt for art is what this is.

For example, Sure, you can make a craven facsimile of punk art for your poster. But that art style signals to punks that other punks are going to be there. You would never reproduce that style using traditional methods because you are not a member of that artistic tradition.

You should keep the originals. They signal to AI slopsters that this is a great place to meet other slopsters.

I suspect they cannot, or else they would have on the website.
Re:Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md on Friday September 18, 2026 @06:46PM (#49761285)
Anthropic in 2025: We can use our dominant market position to degrade the harness experiences of our competitors because they will never adopt CLAUDE.md

Anthropic in 2026: We are losing our market position. Users who adopted other harnesses have a degraded Claude Code experience because it doesn't recognize their AGENTS.md

In defense of capsule, the Filesystem API is janky and has kind of shit UX. Less sophisticated users would probably prefer the UX of a purpose built tool.

I prefer worse UX for the sake of standards and zero install, but many people would prefer the opposite. I don't think Capsule is intended for the HN crowd.

You can get a cheap approximation of this with chromium browsers + Filesystem API and a PWA manifest for that native-ish feel. AI has reignited my interest in building based 100% on browser native features.
