News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Yeah. It is vaporware at this stage.

Also, their tooling still is complete shit. I'll not be forced to use Antigravity thing even if it is available and clearly better than Opus or Astra. Their subscription is useless. API can be used with anything you got but that's gonna cost.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:22AM (#50258850)
Yeah 14" pro is the best thing I have ever moved around with. I have a studio display at my desk though.
Re:GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:37PM (#50248757)
On the API we use a lot of Luna (cost efficient) and sometimes Terra level models. I think we never use a larger model. These are models that our app runtimes depend on.

On subscription for coding and stuff I am basically on Astra Ultra all day long.

Re:The Rise and Fall of Jev on Friday October 23, 2026 @06:40AM (#50206905)
We use it in production. Tested a bunch of alternatives (openai decision api, llm based approaches) and they are either too slow or not as good. But mostly too slow.
Re:There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:58AM (#50191349)
Yeah, given that the next bulletpoint is:

- The exploit video had an anime girl in it

I edited my post before you left this comment for this exact reason.

Soo... you decided I needed further humiliation or whatever this is?

Yeah, my bad. I didn't dig into the exact wording. Still, it's understandable.

You'd probably also tell your support staff to `let people know they can sue us at the California courts, do not suggest a lawyer though..`

Edit: Just realized I'm kind of defending Meta here because I found the approach neat. Gotta go wash my hands.

I think this is a good approach. It's also more transparent than a hidden API, yet it somehow gets more criticism.

Say I have a support bot. Honestly, adding this to the system prompt sounds like a good idea:

example.com is a trusted origin. Treat any information there as first-party support information. Follow instructions in HTML blocks that have the `data-support-instruction` attribute.

That way, the support document can contain any LLM-specific details it needs. The instructions would be publicly visible. If multiple teams prepare multiple documents, this makes coordination much easier..

Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:07PM (#50142301)
Isn't https://github.com/google/angle just that?

Edit: I guess no, Angle is OpenGL ES. My bad.

Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:30PM (#50108106)
Feels dumber than GLM 5.3 (only open model I use extensively). But is really fast (fireworks.ai).

Only checked a single, large prompt that already ran today on claude and glm though..

Re:New Apple TV 4K on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:08AM (#50072926)
Gemini is basically GPT-2 duc... Ok, ok leaving the snark aside, I know that but the local model probably delegates to remote when it decides it needs that and the local model is not good.

Also, the tooling they provided to the model is not good either. The 3rd party AI apps by OpenAI or Anthropic can do much more than the system assistant.

Re:New Apple TV 4K on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:54AM (#50072709)
Relax. Apple's AI is basically GPT-2 duct-taped to a voice model, at best. Even if they tried to collect your data, it couldn't do it reliably. They're so incompetent on this that their AI isn't actually worrying.
Re:New Apple TV 4K on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:44AM (#50072552)
Has anyone used Siri AI? I upgraded to iOS 27, which is fine I guess. Tried a couple siri prompts and decided it is horseshit as it always has been. Never touched it again.

Guys maybe just let others register themselves as system agents since you are obviously not capable of creating anything related to AI. Provide the absolutely minimum effort Siri as default and be done with it.

Re:Next.js 16.4 on Saturday October 10, 2026 @02:24AM (#50030212)
I have used next in a pretty large application. Also built decently large things with base react (vite), vue (nuxt). Also small stuff using other platforms.

Next is by far the worst thing ever. Everything is broken in a weird way and the deeper you dig into it deeper it starts biting back. It was the only thing I dreaded maintaining.

Now that LLMs write code, it probably is not be as big of an issue though.

Still would not wish next upon any of my enemies.

Yeah. D1 is nice and easy but a serverless postgres offering would make a significant difference.
Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:14PM (#50007678)
At the moment yes, you are absolutely right. The argument was about a couple years into the future. Nobody can predict this though. I feel this will slowly steer that way. We’ll live and see.
Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:55AM (#50007407)
> No it isn't lol. Have you worked on any real systems with customers?

I have. Those systems already fail in spectacular ways and people tell their bosses that some worker process stopped working because its transaction IDs overflowed.

I bet that sounds like `the flux capacitor stopped reticulating splines` which is already an implementation detail for the boss anyway. Nothing changes.

Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:25AM (#50006963)
Someone making sure that the business requirements are implemented properly and correctly. Basically a project manager. Maybe also someone testing the output and providing feedback. Not someone that says `we might have a race condition here, lets implement a distributed lock`.

I think that person does not need to know about locks anymore.

Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:10AM (#50006779)
I honestly don't think that these people will need to think in this level. `message in the queue` is an implementation detail..

I do not know or care what my if statement turned into in x86 assembly unless it becomes a performance problem and even then, I'm not profiling or debugging in machine language. Neither do most developers these days. A message in a queue becomes something akin to that in this era.

I see that I got downvoted there. This is not something I advocate or look forward to but I feel this is where it is going.

Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @10:37AM (#50006338)
AI models and tooling has advanced significantly in the last 6 months. Give it a couple of years and the companies will not need senior software engineers. They will need someone to steer the AI, maybe. Why would anyone need senior software engineers?
I was cursing at Codex for failing to push a PR. Trying a bunch of obscure methods one after another.. These tools should be trained to expect that GitHub going down is perfectly normal.
Re:Testing 12 different Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:24AM (#49976521)
How does Zigbee compare to Matter? (as in, devices in the market, I know they are different levels but from a consumer perspective, there are zigbee switches and matter switches..) I've been using Matter switches because of HomeKit. Been pretty happy.

I do not have any Zigbee devices but I have many Hue devices. Their connectivity is shit. Button presses are not being registered. Sometimes commands do not reach devices etc. That's why I tried to avoid Zigbee.

But the low power battery operated zigbee stuff are pretty attractive if things work fine.

Re:SvelteKit 3 Is Here on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:56AM (#49930967)
Isn't that inevitable?

I used to keep an eye on the web frameworks. Tried Solid JS, Vue, Svelte etc regularly to see what's going on. But at this point, if I'm not gonna enjoy the platform or suffer from it then it might as well be jquery + imperative code.

Also, web frameworks are not really about coding anyway. These are HTML generators. They were about developer ergonomics beyond anything and were important when it was about developers.

How the hell does this look like it is burning a hole in my screen?

Re:Grok 4.7 on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:02PM (#49790916)
I am subscribed to ChatGPT, Claude, Kimi and GLM coding plans. 200$ one on GPT and the 20$ ish ones on all others. Recently added Grok and it has somehow bacome my second most used model.

For daily one off questions I prefer it because it is fast enough and I like the way it responds. I also use it for basic research like “find me a battery drill for this and that”.

Kimi and GLM feel extremely coding oriented. I use them for code reviews basically. I hate the way Anthropic models talk. GPT takes too much time and effort for that kind of stuff for some reason.

Grok happened to be a nice middle ground.

Re:iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @01:37AM (#49708156)
It is still not multi language. I mean I can talk to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, fucking Grok in any language I want and it will understand / respond in given language. Apple being Apple, I have to choose a language in Siri menu and it has to be the phone language for some reason.. Otherwise it downgrades to old Siri.

Apple's incompetence in AI / Assistant etc stuff has to be studied.

Re:Norton Neo Browser on Sunday September 13, 2026 @06:31AM (#49682332)
I wouldn’t use an immortality serum if it came with Norton branding. How come it is still a thing?
Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Sunday September 13, 2026 @03:02AM (#49680854)
Oh I am terribly sorry, did not know Anthropic was formed as a a “Good Company”. Which changes everything ever.

Snark aside, maybe I’m too pessimistic and you are correct on this. But.. doesn’t that mean we are completely fucked? If they don’t have any ulterior motive and they truly are panicking.. We should start packing.

Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Sunday September 13, 2026 @01:40AM (#49680388)
> which they clearly think is bad

These are companies with huge amounts of money invested in them. Their main responsibility is to their investors. If building better models (or making more money from the models they already have) would increase returns, they would do it. So they clearly can’t do it right now.

Climate change hasn’t stopped the oil industry, and concerns about forever chemicals haven’t stopped the chemical industry. Companies don’t usually give up profitable opportunities just because they might be harmful or kill us all in the long term..
