Re:Exploring Different Keyboard Sensing Technologies on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @08:57AM (#46885840)
This guy sells new beam-spring keyboards with optional solenoids. https://www.modelfkeyboards.com

I have never seen one in person.

Ulysses Grant was pretty much a machine that consumed cigars and emitted union victories.
Re:The book Kubrick tried to kill on Tuesday May 07, 2024 @08:23AM (#40284626)
It would have been tough since the book and movie for 2001 were created concurrently.
In the library of my high school, circa 1995, there were a couple computers for student use. There was a sign near them saying "No Surfing".
Impressive!
How much manual pruning/selection from the generated text do you have to do?
Re:The pop and rock greats who love model railways on Wednesday March 23, 2022 @04:14PM (#30782772)
It's sort of surprising, but it's a group of weird, creative people with tons of money and free time. I'm sure they're doing tons of odd stuff, model trains among them. (Once they're off drugs, that is.)
Seeing that the author of this review was an undergrad at the time, I tried googling for him to see what he is up to now. It seems he has died after a short but outstanding career.

My gripe is the 1/2 second pause between tracks, even when they're supposed to blend together, like between 3rd and 4th movements of Beethoven's 5th. Otherwise it's awesome.

Maybe they're all just Johnnie Walker fans.
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your personal budget? on Thursday January 09, 2020 @03:36PM (#22005400)
I've got something similar driven by a data entry sheet where I put transactions. The monthly columns populate by sumifs()'ing off of that sheet.

I just started my third calendar year of this system on January 1st. It's working out pretty well. I like it more than an off the shelf budget app because I can customize it however I want. I use to keep track of other things like the last time I vacuumed my apartment.

Re:The Oldschool PC Font Pack on Thursday January 09, 2020 @12:13PM (#22003105)
I miss them too. On a 1920x1080 laptop display I can see the grayscale font smoothing as a blur which my eyes try to correct for. In order to make it tolerable I've turned off font smoothing globally. Ugly and jagged text gives me less eyestrain than the built in blurriness of Windows font smoothing.
Re:Building a license plate reader from scratch with deep learning on Thursday September 12, 2019 @04:24PM (#20956040)
This seems like an item for "Show HN".

(Not trying to scold or anything, but seems like this would fit well with that convention.)

Re:How do people learn to cook a poisonous plant safely? on Wednesday September 04, 2019 @08:29AM (#20876489)
Seems like the kind of process you'd come up with while tripping on hallucinogenic mushrooms.
I've been using this app for several months without knowing what the "Go" feature was for. I guess I could turn it on and maybe help out other riders. Although if my phone is set to only get tower-level accuracy I don't know how much it would help.

Anyway great app and I look forward to the improvement when this rolls out to my city.

Re:Next – extensible keyboard-oriented web browser on Thursday May 03, 2018 @12:21PM (#16987326)
cVim in chrome is a bit like this too.
Re:Netflix FlameScope on Wednesday April 04, 2018 @03:43PM (#16758257)
Some employers will block netflix, which is one reason not to put their technical blogging on their own site.
Yes, but I don't think it's a black swan if you're waiting for it.
In 2025 the word "mean" no longer means "average", it apparently means "median". Amazing!
Re:How to tell if you are a supertaster on Thursday November 09, 2017 @11:45AM (#15663837)
Me too. It would be a completely believable title for an article upvoted on Hacker News.
Re:Some Excel users pop F1 off their keyboards (2012) on Friday September 22, 2017 @10:35AM (#15312526)
If IT has your computer locked down, it's way easier to just pry the thing off.
Re:A village where little girls turn into boys aged twelve (2015) on Wednesday September 20, 2017 @12:39PM (#15295714)
Well, they're sterile too. That's certainly an evolutionary disadvantage.
I hesitate to even post this, but I listened to the audio examples and it seems like this project was not yet a success. I'm not trying to be a jerk or snarky, but the reconstructed audio sounded terrible.
Re:Microsoft Word for Windows Version 1.1a Source Code (2014) on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @02:28PM (#13272941)
The 1984 BYTE magazine review said it was "clever, put together well, and performs some extraordinary feats" but "extremely frustrating to learn and operate efficiently."

This still describes Word, 32 years later.

Someone just needs to sell accessory lanyards for them.

Spotify clients can just go to the IP address?
Re:What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake? on Tuesday October 18, 2016 @10:56AM (#12735008)
This article appears to neglect the impact of craigslist and similar services on classified ad revenue. With that revenue gone newspapers are in trouble, mistake or not.
I wonder if anyone at Yahoo tried using this to "deconvolute" noise into Cronenberg nightmare porn?
Re:Generating Faces with Deconvolution Networks on Monday September 26, 2016 @10:24AM (#12582029)
Some of the "illegal" inputs results remind me of Francis Bacon studies.
