Re:Raspberry Pi 5 – 16 GB, $350 on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @05:00PM (#48482655)
If you just want a tiny desktop computer, sure. The reason to buy a Pi is for the GPIO and the well-established ecosystem.
Re:Raspberry Pi 5 – 16 GB, $350 on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @04:43PM (#48482419)
The linked model has 16x the amount of RAM that $35 model had. You can still get a 1GB model for less than $50.
Re:Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes on Monday August 18, 2025 @11:41PM (#44948051)
What do you mean by “iterating animal names”?
True, but I think it’s a distinction without a difference. If 30% of folks voted for it and 40% didn’t care enough to show up, it’s still a damning indictment of the American people.

Note: I can’t see the original comment, so hopefully I’m not defending some heinous remark…

I’d love for you to expand on this!

Good thing no one uses that!

Re:Ask HN: Why do you use Apple products? on Thursday May 09, 2024 @12:43AM (#40305370)
Yup, it’s exactly this for me. I recently spent about six months with Fedora. It felt good and did everything I needed it to, but it was plagued by connectivity issues with my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I have things to do. Diagnosing driver/chipset compatibility problems doesn’t help me get those things done, so back to macOS I went.

Just a disclaimer, I’m not an expert in this area.

Yes, a person in 60° water is losing heat energy more quickly than someone in 60° air. This is because water is much more efficient at transferring this energy - something like 24x IIRC.

Determining an equivalent air temperature requires knowing a bunch of additional factors (e.g. humidity). I don’t know of a rule of thumb you could apply other than saying the equivalent air temperature of water below one’s body temperature would be much colder, and the inverse would be true for water temperatures above one’s body temperature.

Water is a much, much better conductor of heat than air.
Re:PostgreSQL is enough on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @12:12AM (#39284762)
I’ve found that surrounding myself with competent people - or better yet, people far better than me - has lead me to much better paying jobs.

If you don’t mind a bit of unsolicited advice: run.

100° for green tea… madness!
Re:SomaFM on Monday December 11, 2023 @09:02AM (#38600701)
SomaFM is awesome. I’ve actually got DEF CON radio playing in the background right now!
> I’ve tried to switch away from… search

FWIW, I’m absolutely in love with Kagi. I do realize the price makes it a non-starter for many, though.

> If someone’s going to try and blackmail me with advertising? Blackmail me with money? Go fuck yourself.

I don’t see how what advertisers are doing could be construed as blackmail or any other form of extortion. At least to me, this looks like a simple protest - certainly not anything illegal or nefarious.

Maybe there’s more to it that I’m not aware of. If so, he didn’t make a compelling case here.

Re:Why Cities: Skylines 2 performs poorly on Sunday November 05, 2023 @08:45PM (#38157833)
… and inevitably three weeks later priorities change and it all goes out the window.
For me it’s a question of priorities. My salary makes up nearly 80% of my household income. Maintaining financial stability for my family is far, far more important than going on a crusade that might risk my employment.
If your 1:1s are status updates, then you’re doing it wrong.

Tom Scott did a video about this a few years ago.

Re:How to calculate how much water you should drink on Thursday August 17, 2023 @03:01PM (#37166408)
Or maybe “four to eight” cups. The idea of drinking almost 12 liters of water each day is pretty amusing.
Re:The anesthetic effect of air at atmospheric pressure on Tuesday August 15, 2023 @12:33AM (#37130238)
Sorry if this is pedantic, but we do actually use it for decompression, though usually no deeper than 20ft.

> unlike monoliths, they are far less tolerant of hacking together big balls of mud and demand instead some degree of discipline to design a system and comply with the system design.

A demand that is often poorly met, leaving one with a distributed ball of mud that is more difficult to reason about and refactor.

Re:The Windows 11 Trash Party on Monday April 17, 2023 @11:40PM (#35609707)
Hopefully the next version of Windows will lock the start menu until the user is sufficiently remorseful for all of societies failings.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by “one sided culture of professional responsibility”?

Narcosis is nothing to trifle with. After a particularly bad experience at 150ft on air, I understand why some agencies advocate for a maximum equivalent narcotic depth* of 100ft.

*For the non-divers out there, it’s possible substitute a less narcotic gas - typically helium but not always - for a portion of the narcotic gas in a mixture. Equivalent narcotic depth (END) is a way to equate a mixture’s narcotic effect to that of air at a given depth.
