A tweet I saw a few days ago: "This meeting could have been an email. In fact, it was. But no one replied. That's why it's a meeting now."
What bothers me most about meetings is their duration. There's no need to schedule hour-long meetings.
As a heavy introvert, I've started organizing small get-togethers with the help of my wife. I realized that, past a certain age, I was seeing my friends less and less. There are good friends I might see only once a year, when I did the math regarding life expectancy, I realized that if things continued on that path, I might see certain important people, at best, only another 30 or 35 times in total. So, at the start of the year, I decided to organize a monthly poker night and dinner with my inner circle, and to my surprise, everyone accepted. A few days ago, I ran into a former university classmate, I suggested he'd be welcome at my home for these gatherings, and his eyes lit up at the prospect. Another thing that caught my attention is that my female friends all have active social lives, whereas that is very rare among the men I know (again, past a certain age).
Same here. I also keep an inventory and labels for Box A, Box B, etc.
I had four unused HDMI cables. One day, I needed to send a signal from my PC to my tv. I usually use Plex for convenience and the "resume where I left off" feature, but that day a certain update was acting up, so I decided to use a cable instead. Easy. The next day, I wanted to send a signal from my laptop to the tv downstairs (I still hadn't fixed the Plex issue) and pulled out the second cable because I needed a different length than the first one... but it turned out to be incompatible, so I ended up using the third one.
Maybe he interpreted the "how do you backup" as a particular question directed to him, not a general one.
>Rental scooters/bikes cover last mile service very well in my experience.
Not so great for family trips, shopping around, etc.
>My elderly parents would absolutely love if someone would just tell them what to do and eat every day
I guess a lot of the AI enthusiasts are already pushing the "I automated my daily life decisions to this awesome AI. I now have more time and more brain power left to be productive!" angle.
Yes, that sentence is completely ridiculous. It tries too hard to make a statement, but it doesn't adequately reflect the article's subject matter. It is overly pretentious and vacuous.
>when you stop caring about being the main character, you finally get to just live your life.
I am not sure there is a standard definition of "main character." In literature, at least, there are countless main characters who lead very introspective lives.
To the people who have aphantasia, do you daydream?
>I'd value the right to present a case to a judge
Is the case presented directly to the judge/judge's office? Interesting indeed.
>there isn't time for that
If there is one thing I miss about my adolescence, it is the vast amount of free time. I have never again been able to devote hours upon hours to reading. I used to be able to finish entire books in a couple of days, or a week at most.
Agree. Any hobby can become superficial content for Instagram, especially if your only or main source of information is online channels. But real communities exist, and you need to be in the real world to experience them firsthand.
Super cool. I love how baseball tends to be easily represented through text.
"But they will", "They do, but they don't know", "They do, indirectly"
I don't get these comments.
Almost all opinion pieces are like that. They lack information density, but some readers (like me) like them that way. Otherwise, I'd only read one-line summaries.
Cool. Big fan of dtmts.com myself.
Yes, please. A general-purpose filter like the one on 4chan would also work.
> the obsession with childbearing
To be fair, I think all species are obsessed with producing offspring, regardless of culture.
So exactly as we "modern" people are to the Amish, yet the Amish persist in its way of life.
Some have expressed the opinion in this forum that the future of software lies in programs that are created and adapted at runtime, using genAI. I don't know how far we are from that.
Yes, I'm surprised no one else has commented on this. Some regulations require that at least some backups be located in the same country or region.
No numbers provided, but from TFA:
>In Slovenia, this has resulted in so-called "fuel tourism", as drivers from neighbouring countries, particularly Austria, take advantage of the lower, regulated prices here.
Gambling may be bad on its own, but the gambling and advertising combo are a very harmful combination IMHO.
Hard agree. A 10x productivity increase would bleed outside the personal or internal use cases, even without effort.
Idealism. Optimistic responses are based on a strong dose of positive idealism.
One of the best open-source tools out there. I'm a frequent user of Plex, Jellyfin, Tunarr, local music files, etc. I use it weekly to extract subtitles, trim videos, convert music formats, and remove audio tracks. After writing the previous paragraph, I realized I've never donated to the project; it's time to change that.
As a non-American, I find it interesting that so many comments in the thread insist that "No, American healthcare is not that expensive compared to that of other countries; no, the costs of the American healthcare system are not high due to greed and capitalism; and no, the American healthcare system cannot be cheaper or better, it is not perfect, but it works as it is."
For me, the best solution is a mixed one. My Plex has a curated list of tv shows and movies. Then I have Tunarr for "live" channels from own my selection. Best of both worlds.
