Postmaster Dejoy began dismantling critical sorting machines, reducing and limiting overtime, &c only 6 months into lockdown, well before there was a COVID vaccine. Knowing full well the problems it would cause. For example, many remote rural addresses are only serviced by USPS, and people rely on it for timely prescriptions. IMO it was massive public outcry that prevented a great deal more destruction.

Remarkable does not have any lighting. Its use case seems to be annotating in a well-lit room.

Kindle does not support epub without conversion.

I have a Kobo Forma. Waterproof, light, great physical buttons, an 8-inch screen, 4:3 aspect (literally same as original iPad mini). Most PDFs I can read in portrait, but the rest are fine in landscape.

Kobo's native PDF support is garbage (as is Kindle's), but the koreader app makes it a joy (multiplatform, for Kobo, Kindle, Remarkable, others). It can strip the margins on the fly, is very fast, and has every config option you can think of.

Multiple ways to sideload, wired or wireless. Bonus: integrated support for syncing Pocket articles.

Are they, though? So many trucks, SUVs, and other cars that don't have sloping windshields. Also, I would expect even pastier windshields given that the nationwide speed limit was 65mph until 1995, and it took years for states to nudge it upwards to where it is now (85mph at some places in Texas).

The Constitution was ratified before anyone accepted that germs cause disease. Even if it weren't, I doubt they'd have had the foresight to predict the vast number of radicalized buffoons who would demand the "freedom" to needlessly expose fellow citizens to a virus that's killed 250k people.
> You get a lot of that on Mac though (well, less so on the gaming front, but Macs have some apps that aren't on Windows too). But that's "real" Linux, so you don't have to spend time installing GNU tooling or fighting with brew.

So instead I can run IntelliJ under WSL2? Nope, not until there's a performant X server. Ok, so under Windows, pointed at my Linux filesystem? Wouldn't there be dos2unix file format issues there? And it sounds like it's painfully slow for now until they fix the networking.

But this is somehow better than having to "brew install" a few things? I'm very eager to try this out, but I think WSL3 might be a better starting point.

Reminds me of this snippet of an hour-long call to cancel service. “You don’t want something that works?”; “So you’re not interested in the fastest internet in the country?”; “I’m really ashamed to see you go to something that can’t give you what we can!”; “What is it about this other internet provider???”

Re:Embedded PDF viewer in Firefox 81 supports filling forms on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @04:22PM (#24559391)
I'm curious what you notice is missing in terms of feature parity. I'm mostly a back-end developer (not diving into devtools very often) and switched a year ago. I'm much happier and haven't looked back.
Re:Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now? on Friday September 11, 2020 @02:28PM (#24445799)
I'd also add Quality Assurance to the list. The QA person on our team started out as an engineer and is much happier now (and damn good).
I use 'briss' to trim PDF margins from a laptop, then send to a Kobo Forma (8-inch 4x3 screen) and read using the open source 'koreader', which also works with Remarkable. I was reading on an iPad mini before (same exact screen size), but that's collecting dust now. I expect with the Remarkable's 10.3-inch display you wouldn't even need to trim margins.
It sounds pretty basic from what other commenters are saying, but you can install koreader, which is outstanding (and also supports PDF, DjVu, XPS, CBZ, FB2, PDB, TXT, HTML, RTF, CHM, EPUB, DOC, MOBI):

https://github.com/koreader/koreader

Of course not. That wouldn't be an apple-to-apple comparison.
I'd love to see an eInk display on the exterior of a clamshell like the Razr or Samsung Z-Flip/Fold. It'd be perfect for always-on notifications.
For a better PDF experience, you might want to try 'koreader'. The native PDF support on my Kobo Forma was so bad I was ready to return it, before finding this. It's an open source PDF/epub reader that you can install on Remarkable and other eInk readers. It's just an app - it doesn't replace or degrade any existing functionality.

From the article:

> Apple may launch an operating system for AirPods in 2020, and apps like TTYL and Yac are already creating buzz as audio-first applications.

Apple being Apple, this integration will likely only work with airpods. But I'm with you. I'd rather have great sounding music. I have an android phone and $60 earbuds, both of which support the LDAC 990kbps standard. This sounds much better than when I pair the same earbuds with my Macbook using AAC.

Interesting! Do foam earplugs work for you (expanding in the ear)? If so, Comply makes foam tips to fit various models of earbuds.
