I tried to close my account, and got the response. But they closed it when I failed to verify it.
A single, non-discounted, one-way train ride between the two biggest cities, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, costs €20,20.

The promotional price of this subscription is only a few euros more expensive than the existing unlimited subscription for weekend train travel (i.e. 6:30 PM Friday to 4:00 AM Monday), which costs €39,50. You can pay €4 extra for a 40% discount the rest of the off-peak hours.

With that discount, my commute (Haarlem <=> Amsterdam) costs €3,30 each way. A single trip to work a month makes the promotional subscription better value.

Your example produces very distinguishable results. e.g. if Array.first finds a nil value it returns Optional<Type?>.some(.none), and if it doesn't find any value it returns Optional<Type?>.none

The two are not equal, and only the second one evaluates to true when compared to a naked nil.

Re:Why the $25,000 car is going extinct on Monday June 30, 2025 @04:02AM (#44420674)
The lost in value is in form, not function. The car can still provide the same value (i.e. ability to get from a to b, comfort, reliability, safety features) to you. And if you are not financing it, it frees up the extra money for investment rather than having it tied up in a depreciating item.

I assume they mean the profits in the past couple years are dwarfed by the losses that came before. Looking at the company's entire history, instead of a single FY.

Re:Ask HN: What would you do with $1000 in AI credits on Monday February 17, 2025 @11:46AM (#43080795)
> They expire in 24 hours

8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 2 hours of regular daily tasks. That leaves 6 usable hours.

> What would you use them for?

Nothing, probably let them expire.

> How would you maximize the return from the AI credits?

Given the time constraints, the expected result is nil with some stress as a bonus. By doing nothing, I achieve a local maximum of nil with no stress.

> Would you use them for charitable uses?

This sounds interesting. Is there any charitable organization that could benefit from receiving some credits that need to be used ASAP?

That's missing the part where it waits for the last write to flush before exiting.

What would be the usecase for publishing events in a social media protocol (i.e. ActivityPub) with no information?

Wikipedia has 17 indigenous languages for Brazil alone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Brazil
That's not exclusive to that app. Being able to update the app without going through the App Store was one of the big selling points of React Native a few years back.

I doubt iOS 17 will be adopted faster than previous versions. For one, they are dropping support for multiple device generations this time.

Re:Stripe’s real pricing: a primer on Friday December 09, 2022 @06:56AM (#33920308)
“+33c per transaction”

For a B2B SaaS this likely represents a minuscule percentage of the revenue. For a $5/month subscription, this fee alone is more than 6%

Re:A global house-price slump is coming on Friday October 21, 2022 @12:44PM (#33290101)
What percentage of the audience do you reckon can outright buy houses with cash in the area where they live?
Does your message history outweigh the urgency of getting in touch with those people?

It's highly unlikely you can get an engineer to identify and ship a fix for an issue with no big impact on revenue, within a day.

They were, and still are viable devices to some people. I only upgraded from a 128gb mbp and a 16gb iphone this year, after using them for 7 and 6 years respectively. Storage was never an issue with the laptop, and only became a problem with the iphone in the last couple of years.
Re:$9.99/month on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @06:36PM (#32173312)
Most subscriptions here are paid via direct debit, which the app detects and groups under a "fixed expenses and subscriptions" category. If the charge is considered a subscription, they let you fill a generic form with some details about yourself (i.e. Address, Email, Phone, CustomerID ...) to request it be cancelled.

I reckon the bank(s) requires payment providers to handle this as part of the integration for recurrent debit authorizations.

Re:$9.99/month on Sunday July 17, 2022 @05:18PM (#32131403)
I don't know the details behind it, but I can already cancel all of my subscriptions through an app (Grip) my Dutch bank (ABN AMRO) provides

I had that exact same thought last year and threw together a small project[1] to index some blogs. I didn't work much on it, though.

Re:Heroku Is Down on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @11:19AM (#30179628)
I don´t think it applies to content served from the App Platform CDN (Cloudflare), but egress from origin is 10¢/GB after the included bandwidth is exceeded. Excess egress from Spaces or Droplets is much cheaper at 1¢/GB, and they are more generous with the included amount.
