News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

ebtalley

maybe it works on ie 11, not working on chrome.
Maybe they arent enamored with personalized ads. What if its a bit of a white wash or generalized term. What if they knew enough about peoples personality and thoughts that they could guide that person to want their product. Like were in the beginning of a path that leads to someone being able to tell us how to think and where to go. All very distopian, but I agree I feel like we're quickly moving past personalized ads.

And every other company. Go live in a cave because thats where all companies are going and no one is slowing the process down. This consumer choice gambit very well be a false statement in the future.

I would also propose that its partially not wanting to get the cord wrapped around my neck.

Re:Google purges bad extensions from Chrome on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @04:21PM (#9343656)
Agh, damn. Just removed Awesome Screenshot due to your comment and I liked it as an extension too. Not enough to leak information to third parties though..
Re:Experiment in booting Linux fast on Monday October 14, 2013 @12:26AM (#6545412)
absolutely, gnome boots up very quickly but the churn that happens right after boot slows opening applications to a crawl.
Re:Experiment in booting Linux fast on Wednesday October 09, 2013 @10:45AM (#6521529)
I came here to post something like this as well. I'm less concerned with bootup time and more concerned with how much time it takes to get to actually using the system. its still in the 5~10 minute range for me.
Re:Nest introduces their Smoke Detector on Tuesday October 08, 2013 @04:23PM (#6517584)
I'm unsure that it requires the internet, just a router and AP to direct connect the two devices together. Furthermore, if the the furnace is the root of the CO emission it would be a boon to have the nest thermometer ask for forgiveness vs ask for permission to save you from death.
Re:'Grand Theft Auto V' Crosses $1B In Sales on Friday September 20, 2013 @10:35PM (#6421748)
I think you hit the nail on the head. Being able to choose your own adventure has been captivating even without the visuals. Zork was captivating using ASCII, this even more so.
Re:Calibre version 1.0 released on Sunday August 25, 2013 @04:35AM (#6271379)
I have liked Calibre when I have used it a few times, but the GUI is pretty slow compared to most software these days. I attributed it to using python, but maybe thats not the case? has anyone else found some speed hacks that make it easier to use? (or maybe its time for me to upgrade the machine it resides on?)
its a passive system where the camera sensor collects image data before the picture is taken and analyzes the image, then activates the focus motor to adjust the focus. No emitter required.
Re:Stop using bad passwords. Start using Vault. on Monday July 08, 2013 @04:18PM (#6009007)
+1 for this. I have been using keepassX for at least 5 years now and I can access the file through dropbox on my phone, laptop, and desktop machine without issue and the 2FA is an extra bonus on the full computers.
fight the NSA, that sounds like a patently bad idea.
Re:BitTorrent’s Secure Dropbox Alternative Goes Public on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @04:59PM (#5597982)
this was all well and good to me until I saw that Google shut down someones account for violation of TOS. Im already mulling over alternatives. This might be one of them.

Re:GNOME 3.8 Released on Wednesday March 27, 2013 @04:28PM (#5451814)
I finally got fed-up with unity on my laptop and followed some blog instructions to pull the latest apt version of gnome (3.6) and I have to say that so far I have been pleasantly impressed. Its a paradigm shift from classic window managers that I have cut my teeth on but all in all the polish is so much greater than unity.

congrats to the gnome team, not everyone has bought into it but you've converted me.

Re:Calling Vault - a private Google Voice (sort of) on Wednesday March 06, 2013 @05:27PM (#5334461)
well, it does answer my internal question of whether I could find a consumer facing service that would replace GV in case that service goes down the tubes.

GV has become my defacto number these days. It would be tough to lose that functionality.

Re:Zurb Launches Foundation 4 on Thursday February 28, 2013 @04:29PM (#5301156)
I tried both the downloaded version and the master version from github. both seem to have issues. the release is missing a bunch of dependent js files.
Re:HTC unveils revamped HTC One flagship Android smartphone on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @03:22PM (#5246822)
I have to chime in on the opposite spectrum. I had an evo and use a note 2 as the primary phone. I rooted the evo and put on Cynogen because I got more from the phone by doing so. Removing touchwiz and putting on cynogen or other aosp on the note would net me less functionality this time around. Unless google adds a stylus to their spec I don't see the (absolute) inferiority of forking the aosp trunk.

call it redhat vs debian.

Re:Four years with Google Chrome, and I'm never going back on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @04:01AM (#4473611)
Never thought of using an extension to make bookmarks just show the icon. I have always opened up the properties after saving the toolbar bookmark and deleted the text. That does the trick for me.
data would be * IP addresses, one can assume a bot would only have a set of addresses they could use, barring botnets. * request patterns, ie: did the bot request css/js, etc * request timeframes * UA strings

Sure, its a big data problem, but I can imagine that Facebook has solved these types of scenarios many times over.

consider biting the bullet and buying a 300 dollar adaptec card. It makes your life infinitely easier than trying to monkey with LSI/ soft raid.
ditto, I got half way through the article expecting discussions about neurons.
Re:Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet on Monday June 18, 2012 @07:36PM (#4129177)
Is there some visual distortion going on or is that tablet really thick? Reminds me of the newton.
