Wouldn't there be an implied consent to routine data collection during a physician visit? A clinician may also make notes on patient appearance or mannerisms that they feel may be relevant to the diagnostic process, not to mention non-invasive tests based on touch.

To that point, wasn't it Ballmer who really pushed for MS to spend $40B on Yahoo?
Being part of an org that uses O365, searching for such a product is the first thing I did after seeing this.

"Deadlines are always arbitrary. Deadlines are a tool used by managers to control costs. That is their only purpose. Often, managers try to justify deadlines by citing other dependent deadlines, but those deadlines are always just as arbitrary." - Alan Cooper
Re:What Car Thieves Think of the Club (2010) on Sunday November 18, 2018 @10:20AM (#18480716)
Adam Corolla tells a story of an old Nissan pickup he had when he was younger and poorer. It was so easy to steal he wired in a hidden switch to power the fuel pump, truck was stolen a couple of times and he would just walk a couple of blocks to where it was abandoned. I believe he also painted the stereo brown to as a deterrence to thieves looking for stereos to sell.
Re:Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying? on Tuesday July 31, 2018 @09:52PM (#17659016)
Lots of great ideas here and this is a long shot but you could try to engage the placebo effect. Go get some bullshit homeopathic “medicine” as a pseudo-treatment for your fear. The great thing about the placebo effect is that it works even when you’re aware you’re being treated by a placebo.
Since Germany/Deutschland has an ‘e’ shouldn't it be “whiskey”?
I was pleasantly surprised he was 47 when he did this, not that he wasn't qualified or capable, just assumed there would be a bias towards a younger astronaut.
Re:Why Amazon is eating the world on Monday May 15, 2017 @11:29AM (#14342322)
What I'd like to know is how Bezos convinced investors & shareholders to accept those razor thin margins and profits for all those years. I get the growth argument, but we're into 20 years since its IPO and it's only lately that we're seeing profits.
Re:TV May Die Soon on Sunday April 16, 2017 @02:30PM (#14126814)
I wonder if YouTube Live and other similar services could scale up to serve in a time of true crises. Back in 2001 the web's bandwidth limitations were laid bare on 9/11 and that was with static text & pictures. CNN had to go to a "bare bones" text site and even that had trouble.

Things have improved dramatically since then of course but delivering live video to billions of users simultaneously?

Re:America’s opioid epidemic is worsening on Monday March 06, 2017 @04:58PM (#13806418)
I've heard Drew Pinsky rail against physicians for their role in the epidemic. But he also mentions an assist from the legal community in that they've taught patients they are entitled to lengthy doses of opioids.

Despite the evidence showing only short term benefits to opioid treatment physicians fear being sued by patients for refusing to continue prescriptions. I believe the argument is "Pain is the fifth vital sign."

Re:The Anti-Helicopter Parent’s Plea: Let Kids Play on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @11:02AM (#12744396)
I have 2 kids and have consciously tried to avoid the helicopter-parent mindset and let them play on their own. But now as they approach adolescence I find myself more interested in how they spend their free time. Not so much hovering but making sure they are busy, gentle encouraging team sports & activities as an alternative to just "hanging out."

I believe the audience here skews younger but for those of you that have raised kids to adulthood, any advice? And for you more recent adolescents, how did you experience parenting at that age? When I look back it seems to me that the smartphone has changed everything.

I agree but I look at it as palate cleaner after the prequels, that being said in episode 8 Finn better not end up in carbonite.
Re:Apple Introduces the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus on Wednesday September 09, 2015 @05:24PM (#10194717)
probably not, this is a good dry run for car financing though
Are there applications of this technology in other areas of radiology as an automated second opinion? Would the culture of Radiology welcome such checks or would it be seen as a threat?
Re:Being a Better Online Reader on Thursday May 28, 2015 @11:33AM (#9618834)
Anyone aware of evidence on comprehension & retention of audiobooks? Obviously that medium is not ideal for all subject matter but I've been recently listening to a mix of fiction & non-fiction and found I'm immersing myself much more than on paper or screen.

Re:Standard Markdown Is Now Common Markdown on Thursday September 04, 2014 @08:18PM (#8271556)
This is worse.

The complaint about Standard Markdown was that it appeared to be hijacking the existing "brand" in order to present itself as the definitive version.

One definition of "Common" means prevalent and it seems to me that this word was picked not to solve the above problem but to get around it by making Gruber look like a dick for objecting again to the same problem.

Ironically, a second definition of "common" is "showing a lack of taste."

Re:How odd is a cluster of plane accidents? on Saturday July 26, 2014 @09:00AM (#8089622)
Yep, summer 2001 was the "Summer of the Shark Attacks" because of a couple of high-profile incidences. The news media played it up as some sort of epidemic although there was no significant difference in the numbers. This went on until September when a bigger story came long.
Re:Did removing lead from petrol spark a decline in crime? on Monday April 21, 2014 @07:24AM (#7620607)
Well in the case of lead wouldn't the prediction be: a jurisdiction that removes lead from its petroleum products will experience a significant decrease in crime rates about 20 years later?

Re:Google Reader announced its shutdown exactly a year ago on Friday March 14, 2014 @12:58PM (#7400140)
My favourite aggregator Feedbin had its 1st birthday a few days ago. http://blog.feedbin.com/2014/03/11/feedbins-first-year/
I think there's 2 reasons: Often times the services are contracted out and those contracts are often subject to "lowest bid wins" rules. It is very difficult to judge a quality like competence especially when there's differing interpretations of purchasing legislation involved.

The other reason is that it is often difficult to fire people in the public sector. I believe it to be due to the impact of unions, which will protect even the most egregious offender out of principle. This builds a culture around being hard to get rid of people, even if it is a non-union position the HR process of dismissal is often the same. For example public bodies often have a lot of employee supports (Employee Assistance programs, etc) and before you dismiss anyone you must allow them to avail of these supports.

I don't think Americans get how distrustful other nations are of American-based cloud providers. It is not a matter of Google's or any other providers' behaviour but of the US Government (warrant-less searches and the like). This lack of trust predates the current NSA-Snowden affair and goes back to the Patriot Act (IMHO).

Of course I can't speak for all nations or industries (or even companies) but in my part of the Canadian Health care sector it is simply unthinkable to use a US-based cloud provider for anything to do with patient data.

I was curious with how they claimed they worked with manufactures to fix the exploit. Presumably this meant a mass update of the BIOS of hundreds of thousands of computers across the financial industry.

Re:Windows 8.1’s user-hostile backup story on Sunday September 15, 2013 @08:44AM (#6388906)
Every company "monopolizes" their own products - the problem for consumers begins when there's only one de facto product in a particular market (e.g. - desktop or smartphone OS). iOS is certainly not in that position in smartphone OS and it can be argued that Windows is no longer as dominant as it was during the antitrust trial.
