Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:58AM (#50348588)
At least in France, it means the father leaves and the kid doesn't have enough money to study — and we're transitioning to the workplace providing the funding for studies (apprenticeships where the company pays 10k€ per year, empoverishing the worker).

I'd rather see the name of the father be stuck to the kid so if he's a failure, everyone knows who failed him.

It's a friend. Sorry it's not been judged or publicized by anyone verifiable. It's a lowclass female friend whose husband was accused, the underage accuser said it was false, but because the accuser is a child, we cannot take her retractation as legitimate. Funny how the accusation still stood.

On the front yard of the court, the lawyer asked the wife for 1000€ cash to pay the judge, she's not wealthy so she could't withdraw that amount on her bank account, and her friends didn't scramble in time.

The man was convicted to 10 years, spent 6 actual years in prison. In normal times I'd doubt the story, but the fact that his wife fought for him, divorcing him only after the prison time, and still tells the same story, the consistency through time makes me believe she's legit.

I find this attempt legitimate. Judges should not overlook documents and pass them to AI.

"Back to the Future" was set in 2015, where Marty says "Arrested, judged and convicted in 2 hours???" and Doc answers "Justice is swift since we've removed lawyers". We don't be flying cars but we have this comedic performative justice without a single fair outcome (talking from France). Criminals are freed, prison is a big networking symposium for some jobs, good people whose accusers admitted to lying are thrown for 6 years, because they refused to give their lawyer a €1000 bribe for the judge... Things happen. And France is still seen as a civilized country.

I'm implementing a 2-computers rule:

- 1 computer and Google identity for administrative stuff: Primary accounts for AWS, Google. I also do accounting and have the list of customers. I still don't have any other solution than opening PDFs for the invoices, but it's better than nothing.

- 1 computer for programming, with a non-asministrator account for everything. Claude runs in Docker, with the dev directory mounted, .git:ro (read-only) and .env mounted to /dev/null.

But Claude tries to escape it A LOT. Claude is designed like a virus, we tell him not to do things, and it 1. tried to download the git binary from the internet, 2. read the remotes in the git directory and tried to access them, only blocked because it didn't have the credentials.

DEFINITELY forcefully block out Claude from seeing your .env files, it WILL try to brute-force an access to your intranet!!

It's frightening to me that single companies' valuations can vary by that much. The stock exchange is the Adam Smith way of directing the assignation of resources to the most efficient company, and it's supposed to be liquid enough to allow fine-grained decisions.

On the other hand, it may ensure game editors start optimizing their assets. I'm pretty sure you can optimize those 210GB into 21GB just by deleting unused files.

The joke of this law is that it further advantages pirates, who don't have to pay this tax.
A really important strike that Spanish pilots should do, is striking by respecting the red lights and refusing oral overrides. Hours of delays the first day, trains at the wrong place in the evening, we'd see exactly which regions are affected, and either we agree to repair things or we just leave trains to rot at the red lights rather than risking 900 people's life again (x2 trains = 1800).
I've deactivated my (EU equivalent of) Amber alerts the second they sent ONE irrelevant notification. It took me a few tries but fortunately they also tried their system a few times A WEEK during installation.

I prefer to risk my life every day at not knowing what the government thinks is really important for me to know.

I'm sure someone somewhere will interpret it a 3 free demos of firefighters at home for their kid, with sirens and light, pretty entertaining (It's a reference to the Freakonomics study that, if you make parents pay by the minutes for being late getting their kid, they basically take the fine as a slightly expensive childcare facility).
The first app I will do is Spotlight. Its insistence on finding everything across the universe except applications is tiring.

We're getting free from our software!

Just upvoting to emphasize that Okta, SSO and MDM services in general are an extremely major single point of failure. From the point of view of a non-expert in security, it would seem like segmenting the authentication services of companies should be a security requirement.
For your examples, you've chosen only one side.
Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:16AM (#50271748)
Bill Gates buys huge amounts of land precisely for ecology: Beef meat causes global warming in a disproportionate way compared to chicken or even disproportionate per euros or per gram of protein compared to lentils. All ecologists agree that beef/red meat should disappear from our plates if we want to overcrowd the Earth with more equal people, and along with erradicating a hugely deathly disease that is malaria during his lifetime, Bill Gates will also have accomplished that dream too.

I find a lot of consistency of his audience in hating him for the very reason that he implements his audience's wishes. To this audience, there is no redeeming oneself.

But how can we tease people and instill them hate if we're being reasonable with arguments?
Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:18AM (#50258789)
Apple has moved from a "Big day out" of marketing per year, where all product lineups would be announced, with novelty and conferences, to rolling releases along the year.

Do they get the same marketing impact?

I'm ISO27001'ing my company and I wonder if some day, we'll find a better way than written policies, procedures, forms, evidence and audits. To me, it seems like our current world's biggest flaw: We're losing 2/3rd of our workforce to maintaining procedures, they make the work boring and unbearable, and they're not even efficient, even if they do provide upside in systematically organizing things. Standards (when pushed to procedures, forms and audite) are the regression-to-the-mean of collective organizations.

That may be the game that others are playing. I always wonder how much of this is other countries paying agents to spoil the productivity of the West, as a retaliation for unmerited wars we do to them.

Isn't Twilio complicit? and isn't it deserved that random Twilio customers, who are funding an illegal organization, get banned? If there is no consequence, Twilio will continue. I'd happily fund a campaign to drive Twilio to bankruptcy.

In Australia I ONCE donated to a charity... and learnt that charities can spam "in case of emergency". Which is all the time, for charities. Only changed when I became a EU citizen again and could threaten them, which, surprisingly, worked.

Maybe tell them you're a Netherlands citizen.

Europe will really have to set up Chat Control, and for cause: Making hostile ethnies from Africa live together in Europe will require tremendous forces, but certainly not democratic ones. Anti-muslim bollards on our avenues and in front of schools are only the beginning, along with policemen at each mall and each cultural event — if it succeeds, this project will be the craziest endeavour of humanity.

But it will be costly.

Nonwithstanding the incompetence, maintaining the French Guyana so far away from France costs much than maintaining Cape Canaveral in the homeland. I wonder whether salaries aren't be cheaper on our aircraft carrier than in this remote land, where everything needs to be subsidized to maintain legitimacy for the rocket launchpad.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:54AM (#50180095)
Paris accords were made on the assumption that each human emits the same. At least the stated goal is 16Gt-carbon-equivalent, and at an individual level 2t/yr.

The usual criticism is that it means every human emits the same, which is extremely tied to consumerism level, i.e. level of living, since in the climate universe, we have far enough access to consumerism and we're not limited by resources, but by emissions. And, like every policy claiming equalitarianism-for-all, it means it's no worth working if you'll have the same right to consumerism. Criminal, hard worker, bad country, good country, all equal humans.

The second criticism is how it's impossible to impose less consumerism to another country, let alone a megacountry, so this climate scheme has always been just about limiting the Western civilization, generally by people who go length to explain what Whites have done wrong in the world.

The Paris climate accord is a racist ideology that means that I should disappear. Typical from the 2012 era, but outdated in the 2020ies, and the more people claim that Whites should consume less, the more the world will burn in flames.

We live in a world where a guy had complete access to the entire CIA then NSA's illegal infrastructure. And did walk away with all the documents. Not like anyone cares to protect citizen.

Re:Source code of the Estonian online voting system on Saturday October 17, 2026 @05:40PM (#50135402)
> You solve all of these with cryptography.

Or ballot boxes. Where citizen can keep their eyes on their ballot until it is counted.

Even back in 2002, TV channels in France (60m inhabitants) broadcast the winner at 20:00:30, using statistical models.

But recently, they removed the ability for citizen to stay during the counting, relying on designated persons, which breaks the chain of trust. Might as well cast my vote into a black bag or an electronic machine, no trust at all.

Trust was never the goal. As the means of coercion are higher and the capacity of communication is filtered, it becomes unnecessary to involve citizen in voting, isn't it?

Hey, what if we had a Maven tax if our repo was in Java, and an NPM tax for repos in NPM, for a centrally-managed repo with vulnerability checks?

A lot of this sentiment is based on jealousy or competiton with Musk, or the pleasure of harassment towards Asperger people: Gimmicky demos are what people remember.

Everyone here can probably still remember the time to the minute that Steve Jobs in 2007 said "an internet communicator, a music player, a phone" and the 3-faced cube transformed into a single device. That's what gimmicky demos are for.
