in what industry does your previous salary not matter? (Not a snarky ask btw.) I have never entertained an offer blow my current salary, so personally find them highly correlated (sw eng).

definitely, there are sqlite csv one-liners.
Re:Not My Job on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @12:25PM (#31506740)
in software, this is where "catastrophic" data leaks and security vulnerabilities come from, an engineer or team deciding to roll their own version of a security or cryptography library without having the proper experience to even know what they don't know.
Re:Ask HN: What game do you wish existed? on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @11:52AM (#31506295)
I can't seem to find it, but I read a description for a game in development that seemed really similar to this, a farming/crafting simulator where you start in the basement of a house and can expand to the kitchen etc. You have to avoid the house cat etc.

Re:Podman: A Daemonless Container Engine on Thursday February 11, 2021 @10:44AM (#26102752)
this is an issue I have battled as well. Docker is great for normalizing the execution environment; which should be a huge boon for developer tooling but on MacOS having your laptop sound like a hovercraft just to have some files watched for hot rebuilds is no bueno.
Re:CapRover: Build your own PaaS on Tuesday June 09, 2020 @06:35PM (#23471726)
Would love to see it!
that was a tearable pun if intentional.
Even if you don't change the interface, by doing fun things like writing types in go that accept strings or ints as ints to strangle a perl server binary and proxying unimplemented handlers, you can still end up with problems. We started having issues with our db getting knocked over by callbacks from our server fleet on an endpoint we hadn't even rewritten yet. Turns out the slowness of perl handling the tls connections had shielded the db and forced retries, switching to go meant the db was hammered with the concurrent requests from perl workers, unhindered by the tls handshake.

same! We actually built an 8-bit cpu, and while debugging some very strange, seemingly random bit flips, learned why you coil wires.
Re:Building Your Own CDN for Fun and Profit on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @12:19PM (#16377386)
Makes sense, I am enjoying looking through the source as we are moving to an ansible and hopefully dockerized deployment model.

https://github.com/apache/incubator-trafficcontrol is an open source cache control layer (working with ATS) that has features for header rewrites, ssl, and custom urls (among others). It is built for video but can be used to cache any content. Probably a bit heavy for your use case infrastructure wise though.
Re:Ask HN: Good examples of well written Rails code? on Friday August 11, 2017 @03:26PM (#14993315)
nope. I am sure there are but the ones I worked one were (non-os) mvps that kept getting new middleware and features bolted on until they were barely sustainable and got ported to another language.
Making the switch to diff3 revolutionized working with conflicts for me. This is a cool tool thanks for making and posting it.
Re:Ask HN: Any programmers with long arms? on Monday May 01, 2017 @01:01PM (#14239277)
I use a convertible standing desk, and when standing I don't use arm rests. The key is to have the desk/keyboard at a height where your shoulders hang naturally. I used to have serious wrist issues and switching to the kinesis advantage was the magic bullet for me. Also a big plus for exercises to help, I do back flys to make sure to strengthen the muscles holding my shoulders from rolling forward.

My girlfriend has to use a chair with no arms because of her arm to torso height ratio makes arm rests force her shoulders up. Which I think is the same issue you are facing.

Now I just need to come up with something horrendously risky to use this for...

Re:Ask HN: What keyboard do you use to code? on Monday March 20, 2017 @12:56PM (#13915708)
Kinesis Advantage, I used to have pretty serious carpal tunnel issues and the kinesis took care of the problem. I love the usability of the thumb buttons.

Re:Website Feedback Request on Thursday September 15, 2016 @01:20PM (#12507971)
Knowing to close the about me window was the most unintuitive for me, I had clicked the three links along the bottom a few times before I saw the x, perhaps linking the achievements and stories text on the about me to their respective views could help, or include one or both along the links at the bottom? Some of it may be I am expecting to see it listed alongside those links from years of websites having essentially a resource list along the bottom? (not saying this is good practice necessarily...)
Re:Website Feedback Request on Thursday September 15, 2016 @12:42PM (#12507632)
I definitely recommend putting in the time to use https. If you use LetsEncrypt it is free and can be completely automated.

Closing the about me window to reach the achievements and stories links was unintuitive for me. (also perhaps consider having clicking outside one of the story events close the story (the same as clicking outside the about me and contact me panes), scrolling back up to the x wasn't that bad but my first instinct was to click on the background.)

I am also unsure why the achievements / stories buttons switch between the two as they don't overlap, I understand not wanting to have too much showing at once, put perhaps a pan on the background or something (not a fully fleshed out thought).
