and what do the cloud providers use to back it up? it there a cloud for the cloud? we're close to an Inception like multiple levels of cloud
Anyone that's never had the (dis)pleasure of working with tapes, there's some gotchas to know about before archiving and forgetting about it.
When you create an archive, do not skip the step of reading it back. I'm not talking about just having the system confirm it is readable. I mean actually restoring the data from the tape. I've had tapes fail to retrieve data off of the tape even though the writing app confirmed it was readable.
Drives can have issues reading data written by another drive. Drives can have issues reading a tape it wrote itself.
Why write one when you can write two at twice the time/cost? In all of my experience with tape, I've never written just one tape. In the early days of DVDs, the images were written to LTO to send to have the discs pressed. Two were always sent on the chance one wasn't readable and schedules were so tight that the loss of a couple of days to send a new tape would wreck delivery dates. Another facility wrote three tapes: one kept on site, one sent to IronMountain, one sent to the client directly. Plenty of occasions saw the local copy unreadable and the IronMountain copy was retrieved. These were managed by large robotic tape libraries so each tape was written in a different drive at the same time so it was 3x cost while only 1x time.
Use the drive cleaning cassette as recommended. Your dirty heads can cause the data to not be written/read correctly depending on which head is dirty. If you're having issues reading, clean the heads before giving up on the tape. If you're having issues reading a tape just written, do not think someone else will be able to read it.
Ensure whoever might be using a tape you've written understands what was used to write the tape. Not all archivers are compatible. If you use the tar command to write to tape, people using a GUI app won't be able to read it.
Sounds like a mixed mode disc where it defaults as an audio CD, but has the data portion available for data.
oh, how quickly we forget the infamous autorun debacle of the CD-ROM
You should look for Blu-ray drives instead of Bluray which does not exist /s
Back around 2007 during the red vs blue HD laser format war, the spelling was hammered into me as the incorrect spelling was tirelessly brought to one's attention. Since we're going down memory lane on shiny discs, I couldn't resist bringing this one back too
That's interesting as it is also visible with a crontab -l so that new scripts can avoid using the same second. However, if you have a farm of machines with the same hardcoded value, they will all still stampede at the same time just not at the top of the minute. By allowing a random value, their start times are slightly offset with in the minute. Is the precise 60s consistent interval really that critical or just that each machine checks once per minute-ish?
Yes, thanks for allowing me to offload my RAM to yours!
Sounds like they've been set up as cron tasks. I've always been unhappy with the 1 minute granularity of cron tasks. Only thing I could come up with was putting a sleep(random()) type of line to avoid a thundering herd type of issue.
> as the load of the initial surge into even fully charged batteries can be almost infinite
There was an post a couple of days ago about a telco debrief of an interesting outage that happened. Several things went wrong like the audible bell was manually silence from being heard as a step in routine working but was forgotten to put back into normal mode once work was complete. The actual loss in power triggered the automatic switch to the batteries, but something else seemingly benign happened at the same time so that when power was restored, the batteries had been depleted to the point the charging process could not start because of something similar to this. I wish I could remember the write up, as it was really well written about the cascades of failures that occurred.
The newly elected Congress critters can't take office until they are sworn in by they speaker. As we've already seen from the pettiness of the current Squeaker of the House Mike Johnson, he has already used skullduggery to delay the swearing in of new members. I'm sure claiming that a seat's validity being questioned by ongoing litigation would be cause to delay that person being sworn in.
come on now, you're really expecting too much of the internet with that kind of thought process.
Yeah, when I got to the "can't cook with it" part, I was like wait, what? I use it all the time for smoking brisket.
after many rounds of frivolous law suits if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly
without a veto proof majority, they might as well not be in the majority. Trump could become the most veto happy POTUS ever and stay his course. If they do not have a veto proof majority, they also won't have enough to convict on any potential impeachement. So all of this hope/prayer for a "blue wave" is not going to be worth much.
It's enough that I knew the two teams playing in the Series, that both teams have never won, and that the progress was looking really good for the Brewers all while not being the type that follows baseball at all.
What never happened that you didn't hear about World Series winners or that you didn't hear about the Brewers winning. There's a reason for the later, and as far as the former, well, it's two teams that aren't known for their post season appearances.
It is, in a way. The name is, shall we say, appropriate for the city
I don't even follow baseball, but I'm just happy hear anyone winning that's not a Dodger or a Yankee.
Used car prices are still higher than pre-COVID, but there's still a decent mark up for restoration projects if you want to go that route in used car
I heard people were buying property before this year's Wold Cup that were near the stadiums so they could rent them out and then sell them after. Now, sellers are having to lower the asking prices, and that's just a few months after the tourney. Honestly, I hope those asshats are taking it at a loss
If you're doing anything in the freedom fighter vein of activity, why would you be connecting directly to anything from your IP? Why are you not bouncing around through VPNs, TOR exit nodes, and the like? I know not everyone is a skilled freedom fighter, and even skilled freedom fighters make mistakes, but isn't this like step one to not connect directly from your IP?
To that point, she was on the Committee for Intelligence, so of course she was going to lean the direction of giving Intelligence Community what they wanted. I'd expect someone on Government Oversight to be the one to try to reign it back in, but doubtful any in modern times have the moral fortitude to push back especially under Comer's leadership.
> it becomes noisy and sameish at larger scale or the more you read it.
I absolutely understand where you are coming from, and I agree to a point. If you're of an age where you actually read a printed encyclopedia, the tone and voice of the entire set was sameish as well. The difference is that it didn't sound LLMish like LLM text does. I know that printed encyclopedias would have been vetted by editors, and I feel this is the key difference. Editors not only knew grammar rules, but had that sense of good writing practices that's hard to write down as rules. A piece of text passed through a good editorial review will read human while LLM text reads as LLM text.
As photographer, I find it hard to work with your model. It's like it has no training and just sits there waiting to be told what to do. I spend more time explaining what I want the model to do than actually working with the model. Maybe I should shell out for a professional model instead of working the the open models hoping to be a professional one day.
Post-COVID Apple releases have been totally different than the Jobs era.
The best chance of having a Justice Canon would have been prior to now. If the control of the Senate flips, I hope that any position on SCOTUS that might open up would be denied based on POTUS being a lame duck following the precedent set by Mitch.
With all of the DRM nonsense around printers and authorized print cartridges, I'm kind of shocked the cartridge doesn't also have something that prevents printing if not in an authorized printer.
Not being part of a printer have anything to do with why the print looks bad? Like the thing he created to get the print head to spray ink isn't the same drivers and that's just a PoC to make the project possible? If this is just an extension cable from an actual printer, the quality looks janky to what I'd expect from modern ink jets.
> will perfectly lock on to fursuit eyes
how's the pay shooting the furry community these days?
Again, isn't dating and renting equivalent?
Regardless, it is outdated when very few owned film cameras. If you had a chance to buy a set of Cooke lenses for a steal even though you didn't own a camera, you absolutely would if you were able. You could then rent a Red, Arri, or even film cameras as needed. You're forcing this into a modern digital only situation where camera bodies are dirt cheap maybe from being younger so that's your familiarity??
> "date the body, marry the glass"
how is that different? They both mean that you won't be keeping the camera while holding onto the lenses. Also, at the time of the saying, it was for professional film shoots and not your take on vacay. Yes, it's an old saying, but rang true for a long time. Similar to Moore's law. Neither are as relevant while still being a bit truthy.
