Re:Ask HN: Those who got layed off. Have you found a job? on Thursday July 11, 2024 @10:09AM (#40937006)

Laid off last fall but luckily had severance take me to the beginning of 2024. Just started a job this week.

My experience with the job hunt this time around was horrible. I was overqualified for a large majority of positions I applied for and a perfect match for others yet I would be extremely lucky to even hear back a 'no thanks'.

The last time I was applying for jobs was during covid and I was at multiple stages of the interview process for multiple companies all at once and was actually able to make a choice regarding my future employment instead of just taking the first bone thrown my way like this time.
Re:Laurent de Brunhoff, 'Babar the Elephant' author, died on Tuesday March 26, 2024 @12:55PM (#39830094)
In the early 60's he stayed at a hotel that my grandfather managed in NYC. He drew and dedicated a Babar picture for my mother and each of her sisters, 4 in total. I inherited one of them from my aunt who is my namesake Roberta --> Robert. It has been my most prized possession for a long time.
rotten tomatoes is the absolute worst of all worlds when it comes to film review so praise be there isn't a parallel for consumer electronics

Re:Ask HN: Is Facebook Dying? on Thursday March 31, 2022 @01:40PM (#30870078)
Facebook is king for niche groups and I just don't know why. I'd love to give it up but I honestly don't know a better way to interact with these micro groups i've grown to love. P.S the answer is most definitely not reddit
I sold my car and now drive one of those Zebra mopeds in SD. Next time I buy a car, it will be electric.
Repetitive yes, brainless no. Every day is the same problem and you need to figure out the best way to solve it. You also get paid for the number of hours the computer says. Finish your route in 5 hours and getting paid for 8 was pretty rewarding. I also stayed in great shape and you get to hang out outside all day.

Re:Detailed Agenda for a DDD Design-Level Event Storming on Thursday October 31, 2019 @01:40PM (#21411498)
We are currently in the process of reorganizing our teams to use DDD & Gherkin. Any tips? There is a lot of churn currently and I have not yet seen any real benefit to it. Context -- I'm full-stack, our team has recently grown to a point where we needed more organization than just throwing a frontend/backend pair at a story/task. Our team is distributed across the country as well.
Re:Take Better Screenshots on Thursday October 31, 2019 @01:19PM (#21411236)
Checking out the browsers / desktops of my coworkers when they are sharing screens is fun. We still make fun of one guy who had google bookmarked in chrome.

I listened 'The Stand' on audiobook over my commutes a couple of years back. Incredible way to spend 50+ hours in a car
Blizzcon is just a few short weeks away, I'd love to see a repeat of last years publicity crisis

'triggers' were recently resurrected by the new Overwatch map editor basically just drop down boxes with 100's of conditions... I just don't have the patience when I know I could write this code myself If I actually knew the API

Re:Is WSL actually ready for developers? on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @11:58AM (#19443474)
I've got a pc and mac and I web develop on both -- Normalized hotkeys in vscode and I use git bash. Have to hop in to cmd for some very specific things but I could really care less which machine i'm on if i'm just developing

Re:Coolest Things I Learned in 2018 on Tuesday January 08, 2019 @12:52PM (#18857629)
what an odd question. Ping pong is the only sport I can think of off the top of my head that I wouldn't be absolutely terrified of a professional athlete blasting a ball/puck/thing at me and even then just because i'm not terrified, that ball would still hurt pretty good
Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2018? on Wednesday December 12, 2018 @11:47AM (#18665397)
I had to start it a couple different times - It is a hard read no doubt but truly truly worth it!
