Re:If you love a website, back it up on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:17PM (#50343057)
Seems like an extension an LLM should easily be able to make in a few minutes. Start with asking an LLM to use a Chrome MCP to see what it can do and if its feasible.
Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:59PM (#50306758)
I love when those in power so clearly say fuck you because it wakes up a lot more people. Next up is Anthropic stopping you from building software that is similar to existing software owned by any company that can afford the services of an AmLaw 100 law firm.
If you don't have a filtering mechanism moderators will burn out and more interesting projects may never be seen. If you've run a bunch of LLM agent sessions concurrently you run into the human review bottleneck problem. That's all this is on a larger scale.
I'm watching Photocraft because if 1000 people on the Internet working together can vibe code a viable Photoshop clone we will truly be in a new era.
I am thinking a little further into the future where companies and people themselves become more dependent on AI. If LLMs disappeared today how many companies and people could not function? Probably not many. But, in 5 years how many companies will be dependent on AI? A future where companies are dependent on big AI labs to run their business could happen. I think the business term is forwards integration, where a seller moves into one of their buyer's markets.

Also, in such a future businesses would be reorganized to use AI. That probably means less employees and reduced human complexity. The business processes are further abstracted from people making it easier for a big AI lab to move in.

If I was looking at businesses today where the big AI labs could step in I would look for businesses where they earn high margins based on intellectually complex tasks. Maybe the most pure example would be trading in the stock market since it can be completely done by a computer. Then you have areas like law which process large amounts of data but are also heavily based on relationships.

Sorry folks, gatekeeping is coming back. In a world where AI can produce infinite software and infinite "content" there have to be stricter rules to participate in a community.
I think it's just a logical conclusion if everyone keeps feeding OpenAI and Anthropic data. I don't think it's imminent, but if AI keeps improving and regulation is very lax I could see this world developing in 5-10 years.

Say OpenAI builds GPT-11 and they realize it can do 95% of their clients work. Why not hire away key people from the client or the client's competitors and start eating into their market share? OpenAI would realize if GPT-11 has this ability then Anthropic is probably able to do the same thing. The company that has the most money and credit available is going to be able to buy more compute. OpenAI and Anthropic cannot slow down unless mandated to by the government.

Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @09:40PM (#50160322)
The rapid advancement of LLMs is screaming that if you want to do something valuable in the future for its own sake don't do it on a computer. Anything a single person can create on the computer can now be cloned in a couple of days at most.

Get some offline hobbies. Take up an instrument, find a dancing partner, do anything that cannot be replicated by an LLM.

I always thought the gambling ads were a bit dystopian when watching British sporting events. At the time, I had no thought of the same thing coming to America.
Re:DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:52AM (#50131675)
I am a huge DeepSeek fan, but it cannot come close to Opus 5.5 on UI design. A $20 Claude subscription that I use some months and cancel the others along with Deepseek API is great.
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:05PM (#50107663)
This was a huge problem before AI due to Amazon and global internet marketplaces. Why spend R&D dollars developing an amazing product when Chinese knockoffs will show up 6 months later? I wonder how many great consumer products don't exist because there's no way to recoup your R&D costs and develop a healthy market.

Imagine if there were no intellectual protections for pharmaceuticals. The government would have to take over R&D.

Older people grew up socializing constantly so they can just start talking to strangers like they've known each other for years, especially if they are from the same town.
This reminds me I need to get to work storing a weeks worth of water in my basement and stashing a little bit of cash in the house.
Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:25PM (#50059724)
I bet a lot of people are paying attention to the vibecoded Abode suite. If it's successful that will be a huge signal.
Re:Grieving the Loss of Details on Saturday October 10, 2026 @03:19PM (#50036189)
We are taking away the ability for some very smart people to be engaged with the world in a way that is challenging and meaningful to them while building tools that allow one person to do the work of 10. Fill in the blanks if you want, but this is not good. We must quickly find out how to give people hope for the future.
Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Saturday September 12, 2026 @12:03PM (#49673763)
I'm guessing diminishing gains are setting in on training frontier models and the capital isn't there to chase them. Even if OpenAI/Anthropic and Chinese companies said they would slow research nothing can stop the NSA and Chinese intelligence services from continuing on in the dark.
Re:An overview of how our family is prepared on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:18AM (#49611615)
Is there a plausible scenario where having 2 weeks of water does anything more than having a weeks worth? I feel like after a week you're either getting evacuated, the government is delivering supplies, or large parts of the country are not functioning.
This annoyed me to the point that I created a python script that could search opencode's database and then a skill that uses the script to find the session I was thinking of. It's nice to be able to say "I think 4 days ago I had an issue with a dropdown in Qt6, find that session." Saves a lot of time and tokens.
Re:GLM-5.3 is now open-weight on Friday August 28, 2026 @01:14PM (#49481642)
Not in my experience. Tasks that would normally cost $0.08 on DSV4-Flash have cost me $0.30+ on GLM-5.3-Flash. These costs are after Deepseek's recent increase. Also GLM-5.3-Flash is so slow compared to DSV4-Flash. I would be fine with GLM-5.3-Flash if it was cheaper and at the same speed as DSV4.

I use DSV4-Flash on Max through Deepseek's API. I have been using GLM-5.3-Flash on High through Openrouter which I thought had a 50% discount. I must be doing something wrong for the costs to be off this much.

Who is going to break it to the Americans that China is more than a slight favorite to win an existential battle over which country is better at math?
Re:AI poster wins Ohio State Fair contest on Sunday August 02, 2026 @08:32PM (#49149868)
I have a feeling the winner didn't think they were going to win or maybe even submitted the poster as a joke.
Re:Writing by hand is good for your brain on Thursday July 23, 2026 @11:47AM (#49023522)
If I'm really studying a book I'll have an office supply store cut the spine out and make the book spiral bound. It's pretty cheap to do it too, like $10 or something.
Re:We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @05:52PM (#48739722)
It reads like marketing speak is the problem. Why is it written in such a urgent, compelling manner with those short punchy sentences? It may not be AI, but no one writes like that naturally. Maybe the author picked it up from reading a bunch of AI writing? The repetition of using you as a subject is also a red flag.
A camera in 2026 is not the camera of 1996. Cameras today are connected to active and passive monitoring systems which are much more invasive to privacy. What will a camera be able to do in 2036?
You're correct that it is a choice. Flock would barely move the needle on stopping crimes caused by the mentally ill and drug addicted.
The majority of crime is committed by a relatively small number of individuals. If citizens feel crime is out of control they need to vote in politicians and judges who sentence repeat offenders to long sentences or involuntary commitment.
Re:The Wholesale Plagiarism of Obscure Sorrows on Saturday June 20, 2026 @03:53PM (#48612416)
Am I infringing on copyright if describe all user interaction with your software to an LLM and have it spit out a clone? It's not using your code.
Re:US Consumer Price Index up 4.2% on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:53PM (#48480094)
The only thing I want to spend a bunch of extra money on is a nice property and making twice the money would not get me there in what I consider a reasonable amount of time. I'm also not interested in going on an extra two fancy vacations per year or a nicer car. I'm plenty content to read, cook, learn, and enjoy the arts.
Re:US Consumer Price Index up 4.2% on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:46PM (#48479975)
I don't have a family, so it's manageable. If I had kids there is no way I could work part-time.
Re:US Consumer Price Index up 4.2% on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:45PM (#48479952)
My salary has not kept up with inflation over the last 15 years. The industry I am in, which is not related to tech, has undergone massive consolidation leading to 2-3% raises some years and no raises other years.
