This is a very ungrateful and childish perspective. It assumes that these things exist out of thin air rather than things google has created. Products don’t just appear, they’re built. Nothing is stopping someone from usurping google. Ever hear of oracle, intel, xerox, blackberry or Microsoft?

So, you can make a generalization but you pout when others do? Nice.
Re:America's reputation drops across the world on Thursday April 24, 2025 @09:49AM (#43782785)
That’s a horrible conclusion. It’s anti-constitutional and exactly why you have unchecked power now. We have checks and balances. The courts and congress are the safeguards.
Re:America's reputation drops across the world on Thursday April 24, 2025 @09:47AM (#43782761)
Are you trolling?

The government is not meant to continue functioning with a mentally inept president. The vice president is supposed to have them removed.

The president is elected, not his cabinet. I can’t believe you even said that.

Re:America's reputation drops across the world on Thursday April 24, 2025 @09:45AM (#43782730)
America is a free market who uses its military to keep shipping and global trade free from interference. We deport some illegal immigrants.

China is a communist country with real life re-education camps. They manipulate markets and steal intellectual property. They’ve been cozied up to authoritarian and oppressive regimes, like Russia, for a long time.

That’s worse for stability in my opinion.

Re:America's reputation drops across the world on Thursday April 24, 2025 @09:39AM (#43782656)
You’re spot on.

There really is no comparison. China has real life re-education camps not make believe ones.

> China is placed ahead of the US when it comes to playing a positive role on the international scene.

That’s when I knew it was propaganda.

Salty much? I’ll assume you wear scarves and burn teslas
This is the truth.

I'm assuming this, like my similar comments, will continue to be downvoted by people who are out of touch with reality.

HCQ combined with Zinc was a valid treatment for Covid. The drugs peddled by the people profiting from Covid were essentially HCQ and Ivermectin clones. Both are considered essential medicines by WHO, or at least, they were at the time.
> a horse dewormer

Misinformation. Ivermectin won the Nobel Prize as a miracle drug. At the time, it was a global treatment for parasites and worms in humans, and it is still today.

Ivermectin was considered a necessary drug by the WHO even as COVID-19 kicked off.

The people calling it a horse dewormer were those who profited from the pandemic.

Accountability is shutting down the agency and shuttering the programs. They did that.

The point of a slush fund is that the funds weren't allocated for specific programs by law, they were discretionary. So, while technically not illegal, they are frivolous and unethical. Not to mention, how would half the country and most of the world react if Trump's DOJ started arresting the people involved? They'd call him a tyrant and burn more Teslas.

> at the expense of the average US citizen.

Such bullshit. Our tax dollars were being stolen and thrown around the world covertly by a USAID slush fund. The entire organization was co-opted and projects were frivolous.

It's not a conspiracy. You can read about the spending online.

Anyone who thinks Trump's admin is any more detrimental than the previous one is either misinformed, uninformed or a bad actor.

I stopped taking these discussions seriously because the other side is so high on propaganda that the conversations aren't authentic. It's just talking to ActBlue robots.

Not the same thing at all. Every country has and enforces immigration laws. It’s not Big Brother.
equity is a post-modern buzzword that doesn't mean anything. it's only applicable in world of fairness which doesn't exist.
Rich countries are not going to subject themselves to austerity so poor countries can catch up and surpass them.

Life's not fair, the world will never be fair, and no amount of global-equity-fetishism will every make it fair.

Sorry, I didn't mean to remove regulations. I meant that maybe the regulatory side of the agencies should meet as needed with enforcement being the thing that is perpetual.
I’d argue the regulatory unit ought to be temporary while enforcement is ongoing. Permanent organizations are just as ineffective. They did nothing to protect our food supply from ingredients banned in other countries. They did nothing to stop microplastics from taking over the world.

So exactly what are they good for while sitting around pontificating for years on end?

While true, the larger the ship, the more difficult it is to turn. I think the idea is that for every salaried individual, you have support staff, equipment, benefits, etc that come along with them. It’s also another cog in the chain of work that needs to be done.

For example, there are at least 1200 positions that need to be confirmed. It can take half the presidency to staff a full cabinet. I think we can agree that’s excessive.

Re:Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read? on Monday October 07, 2024 @01:03PM (#41768179)
The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America by Russell Shorto.

Before the English took New Amsterdam, it was a thriving settlement full of interesting economic ideas and gripping narratives. I can't recommend this book enough. The audiobook is great, so I bought the paperback. 10/10

Do you have a source for this claim? It’s not something I’ve read or heard in 36 years.

Hi, you can report internet related financial crimes to the FBI's Internet Crimes Complaint Center: https://www.ic3.gov/
Can confirm.

Replies seem to miss your point. No matter how a company hires, some group of people will be upset and complain about it.

The real issue is that the company ghosted OP rather than provide feedback and closure.

Personally, the more experience I gain, the better the hiring process becomes.

Not on this team, but have heard nothing but praise internally. Congratulations to the Hydrogen team on shipping!
Re:Understanding UI Components in Elm on Wednesday June 08, 2022 @02:43PM (#31672150)
Personally, I just don't enjoy writing Elm and much prefer TypeScript. For me, TS is great because of the community, tooling, and its self-documenting nature.
