Which is why it's good that at least we got thee of the best comedy series out of old Rupert plus the inspiration for Succession.
It was all worth it for the Simpsons, Family Guy and Always Sunny.

Re:Why Would Anyone Pay for Facebook? on Sunday February 26, 2023 @06:49AM (#34944830)
I think currently yes. It seems pretty likely that they'll expand it to include brands soon.
Re:Why Would Anyone Pay for Facebook? on Saturday February 25, 2023 @06:51PM (#34941668)
It is amazing how many people think they know better than the guy whose company did $120 billion in revenue last year. Maybe Zuck has more business sense than some rando writing for the Atlantic?

Imo paid verification will absolutely make sense to the tens of millions of brands that advertise on Meta's platforms.

"Nobody seriously thinks that Facebook or Twitter will rake in anything remotely comparable" (to the billions made by airline fees)

SnapChat already has 2 million paid subscribers. Between FB and Insta, Meta has > 6x as many active users and will charge for verification separately at this stage so 10 million paid Meta accounts seems realistic in the short term = ~$1.44 billion a year.

Re:Meta reportedly plans more job cuts on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @04:05AM (#34787106)
2.96 billion people remember that the company exists on a daily basis. Meta did more than three times TikTok's reported total 2022 revenue in Q4 alone.

https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2022/q4...

The more likely outcome is lowest common denominator high CPC ads. Dating, gambling, "investing", diets, supplements, etc

You've got to love Doctorow's articles in the Guardian bemoaning "surveillance capitalism" being covered in enough retargeted ads to make Zuck blush.

Re:Web Platforms Collapse: The Facebook Case Study on Sunday December 04, 2022 @06:58PM (#33859472)
Yet another article conflating the decline of Meta's stock price with actual collapse. Three of Meta's products have more users than TikTok:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/272014/global-social-net...

There are legimate concerns but saying that a company on track to do $120 billion in revenue for the year is disingenuous.

Re:Zuckerberg's leaked email on VR strategy (2015) on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @11:27PM (#33542194)
This may be the silver lining of the market cap evaporation for Meta. It is harder to argue that it is an all powerful monopoly now vs in 2021.

What sweet irony it would be if the biased coverage by NYT, WaPo, etc allowed Meta to resume making large acquisitions and maintain their dominance for years to come.

Re:Mark Zuckerberg confirms broad layoffs to begin at Meta on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @04:48AM (#33529293)
The fluffy vanity project budget comes out of revenue not Zuck's personal holdings ;)
Meh big companies run cringe ads... Yes, I have a Quest and have had fun with friends over. Multiple Quests would be even more fun, space provided. You can talk and use the device at the same time. Much like you can play chess, PlayStation, etc and talk.

They've sold millions of units and reported $1.5 billion of sales on the Quest store so maybe it's not so absurd.

The only meltdown is the stock price. FB is still the most popular social network in the world. Insta is likely second. Quest has outsold Xbox and is on the way to outselling PlayStation.

$27 billion in revenue from three billion daily active users last quarter. Bytedance by comparison lost $7 billion last year. Meta Reels are being shared one billion times and viewed 140 billion per day. As much as the biased media wants it to be true, Meta isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Consumers couldn't care less about the stock price.

How is a company that did $27 billion in revenue last quarter and has 3 billion users imploding? The stock price is down (a similar amount to Netflix,PayPal and other quality companies). There is a difference.
Meta just announced 2.93 billion daily active users across its family of apps. Reels are being shared one billion times a day.

TikTok is not taking over the entire social media space any time soon.

Ban all sharp and pointy objects. Mandate that helmets and Hazmat suits be worn at all times. Personal responsibility and agency is a threat to our democracy.
Re:Snap lays off 20% of employees on Wednesday August 31, 2022 @08:15PM (#32670074)
TikTok had $4.6 billion revenue in 2021, Meta had $117 billion. TikTok has stolen some fries but Meta still has a huge juicy steak.
Re:Is this the end of social networking? on Thursday August 11, 2022 @08:28PM (#32433492)
Meta had $117.9 billion in revenue for 2021, TikTok is estimated to have had $4.8 billion. Social networking is alive and well.

The push into short form is just another way to get users to stay in app longer. Come for your friend's posts/stories (or marketplace, groups, etc), stay for the Reels.

Re:Instagram Is Facebook Now on Thursday December 02, 2021 @04:36PM (#29423010)
The ~$350 billion that those extra shares would be worth don't matter?

FB marketplace has a billion monthly active users. That's more than Amazon and eBay combined. Anecdotally I know people who hated FB before it was cool that have returned because of Marketplace. The feed, Facebook video, birthdays, events and a host of other features are still significantly used.

VR is a rapidly growing narrow niche which Oculus is dominating. I am a Signal fan and I actively push my contacts to use it but I don't see it surpassing WhatsApp anytime soon.

Disliking FB/Meta ≠ FB/Meta being irrelevant. There are billions of users left to come online and odds are that Meta products will be amongst the first they use.

Re:Square is now called Block on Thursday December 02, 2021 @04:03PM (#29422535)
This. People hate Meta/Zuck so much that they can't give credit for what was a brilliant rebrand.

Given that what makes a good brand is subjective perhaps a more objective measure is the value of the domains the companies rebranded to.

By this count Meta.com > ABC.xyz > Block.xyz. I'm basing this on data available via namebio.com, automated appraisal tools such as GoDaddy Appraisal and Estibot and thousands of hours of personal experience researching, buying and selling domains. Meta.com is worth six or more likely seven or even eight figures as a standalone domain. Block and ABC.xyz? Not so much.

Re:Instagram Is Facebook Now on Thursday December 02, 2021 @07:53AM (#29415490)
Zuck doesn't own 50+% of the company (just the voting rights) and Oculus, FB Marketplace, FB Groups and WhatsApp are all very relevant market leaders. In terms of the rebrand they committed $10+ billion a year to VR development and promoted the head of VR to CTO so it's a pretty bold PR stunt.
