dust-jacket

That's just not true. Your 13yr old is your legal responsibility, whilst you have a home, they do to.

Someone who you generously take in now has a roof over their head but they have literally zero protections - you can argue with them tomorrow and be within your rights to throw them out.

Someone with nowhere at all to stay might die of the cold tonight.

Homelessness charities absolutely want to know which case you are in. They require different interventions with different priorities.

Sure. And yet...

Nah, you gotta commit. That's part of the fun. And you'll never know what the birds you scare away would have said.
Re:Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:08AM (#50069332)
> It’s usually the white-collar workers who bear the most economic disruption from major technological innovations

That seems like a very poor take. If it feels like white-collar workers are most disrupted in recent times, its because the labouring workforce in the western worlds has been absolutely gutted by technological innovations (and the economics of globalisation).

Factory workers seem less affected because there's hardly any factory workers left!

The caption literally says "will need to look something like this"
Re:Making Tailscale Faster on Thursday September 24, 2026 @11:33AM (#49832098)
This all sounds great but until they stop it eating all my iOS battery I can't leave my phone connected continuously, which is such a pain.

I'm not about to switch back to the configuration management hell that was pure wireguard but it would be really lovely to not have to connect/disconnect when I want to use tailscale

Re:Doing Everyone Else's Job on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @12:26PM (#49803855)
Wait, you think to not be a grifter you have to "care so hard when their efforts are unappreciated"?

Wut?

I'm not encouraging the to grift, ffs, I'm encouraging them to go and work somewhere that will appreciate their efforts!

Re:Doing Everyone Else's Job on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @12:24PM (#49803815)
I think you've completely misunderstood my point. It's not that they shouldn't keep doing what they do, its that there are places that will appreciate what they do.

I accept that public sector, charitable sector etc, make this calculation a bit different. But in the private sector it just seems silly to give yourself to a job that doesn't appreciate what you give it.

Re:Attention is all you have on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:53AM (#49803332)
> there are an infinite amount of books that you'd like to read

if i want to read them all, I don't need help choosing. any book is one I want to read!

if I don't want to read them, I already have opinions. I should just pick one that I do want to read.

and I don't have opinions I can just ask someone for a recommendation.

big libraries existed before algorithmic recommendations, and people managed.

Re:Attention is all you have on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:48AM (#49803250)
that's just simply not true.

talking about doomscrolling and how it would be better not to do it is one of the favourite pastimes of the doomscroller. loads of fb users hate it but struggle to believe they could do without it.

Re:Doing Everyone Else's Job on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:54AM (#49728955)
I've never understood why people would continue to care so hard when their efforts are unappreciated.

But I've also never worked at a large company.

Re:Forgejo <=16.0.3 Critical RCE on Friday September 11, 2026 @07:30AM (#49656642)
CVE AND release note not enough tipping off for you?

it is absolutely not on maintainers of projects to proactively notify those who've forked the project. clear and transparent notices are exactly the right approach

Well I do make a pretty good sandwich :)
Re:Programming is Art on Monday September 07, 2026 @11:59AM (#49599799)
I'm grumbled in other comments here about definitions of art that are so vague that they're just "anything where you think a bit"

But I'd take them every time over a definition of art being "something for which there is a market". Screw that.

OK. Well I am clearly an art master of lunch planning. Who knew?

Re:Programming is Art on Monday September 07, 2026 @06:47AM (#49596674)
100%. Hobby is the word this article was looking for. And I don't think that's less meaningful, or that there's no way people can elevate their hobby to artform. But what the article describes is people with a hobby, not an art.
Re:Programming is Art on Monday September 07, 2026 @06:44AM (#49596653)
> Most solutioning is art, given that you should have more than one way to reach the target state and target state itself is negotiable and non-concrete. When there are multiple options you are forced to analyze between them, sometimes you have a preferred option if the analysis has been done before. Your choices while solutioning will reflect your experience and how you think. In short, it definitely reflects 'you'.

This is an very broad definition of 'art'. By this metric, I'm pretty sure me choosing what to have for lunch is art.

Re:The Human Is the Loop on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @06:16AM (#49270109)
My complete guess is there's a level of bravado or over-confidence about it.

It's obviously massively generalising, but I'd say someone without ADHD is more likely to feel like the number of tasks they can do at once is only limited by pesky things like physics and time, and LLMs "solve" this by allowing them to do more at once.

A bit like when a good manager takes on more and more reports and their ability to manage the larger team goes completely to shit, but without the useful feedback loop of the grumpy, mismanaged team.

This is lovely and I feel much the same.

We live pretty close to a flight path and still point at planes as they go past and wonder where they might be going on holiday.

Sadly no longer live close enough that I can see my house when approaching the local airport. That was always cool.

No-one's stopping you hosting your own projects.

Re:Why the future is local app on Thursday July 30, 2026 @12:27PM (#49112247)
Really? I'm genuinely surprised.

I've used it plenty for things like driving trip to remote places with poor signal (e.g. where you'll want to be able to get directions back to civilisation) and foreign cities (when you're on a phone contract with bad overseas data prices).

Re:Why the future is local app on Thursday July 30, 2026 @06:48AM (#49108160)
> Better even: you can let the user backup their data themselves!

Whilst that's better for a small audience of techy types (most here, I'd guess), you know that's not true for most users, right?

Like people used to lose work on hard drives and laptops that they hadn't backed up all the time and its much, much rarer now (OK, I don't have data beyond anecdata but still).

Re:Why the future is local app on Thursday July 30, 2026 @06:45AM (#49108134)
You're not wrong, but this feels like an equivalent to range-anxiety in electric cars.

The area you can download is still pretty large - whole cities, big chunks of countryside. I'd put money on the fact its good enough for most people's uses.

Re:Mitchellh starts a new company: Superlogical on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @12:51PM (#49099941)
I think the generous take would be...

- it demonstrates they have funding (pre-empting "no-one will fund something weird like this")

- its transparent and open (pre-empting "which bastards are the ones who really own it?")

Re:More Tailscale tricks for your jailbroken Kindle on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:11AM (#49095915)
Ohhhh that's not a bad idea at all. I'd read the article and was still largely in the "but why do I care?" space, but hands off management makes a lot of sense.
Yeah this person saved you.

They were asked if you'd fit in and they gave the most diplomatic, polite feedback that they knew would be be taken as a no. Their comment was a pretty clear admission that this was not a "work life balance kind of company".

Oh I thought exactly the opposite!

I feel like every security blog (or even just tech blog) I've read recently has had paragraphs and paragraphs of largely LLM generated explainer waffle. This felt refreshingly focused and to the point.
