The state of the art in virtual audio is keeping pace with these developments. I've had some experience with research headphones that combine HRTF models with head tracking, and the result is uncanny - Except that the environment your ears are presented with has to match the strong priors from your eyeballs. So it will be awesome to experience virtual audio and video at the same time.

An elegant solution might be a subtle visual or audio cue right before a picture is taken. Say cheese!

No way, sir. Saying 'you entered the wrong password' in that case is not any more confusing than the ambiguous error that says 'you got one of them wrong but I'm not gonna tell you which.' most reset password systems are keyed to your email address anyway.
