Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:07PM (#50347943)
I remember finding YouTube videos to watch on the something awful forums in like 2007. Was the only real way I knew of at the time but the variety puts my current recommendation feed to shame.

I miss the sheer random absurdity of what I'd find there. Don't remember too much of what I found any more, other than "man from lox" which I still find someone new to show it to every few years or so lol

I will say the recommendations now being so personalized gives me a lot of big topical chunks of content relevant to my interests that I'd probably not have found on a random SA thread. But so much of it is just "a competing channel of what you're already watching" and "what we are recommending to half the world right now and we can tell you won't object to". Not the random out of thin air things like "ghost ride the whip" (another that just instantly came to my mind lol)

That's simply not true. You do need an ID, as is to be expected, but a state ID is equally valid as is a passport. It's not "extremely hard" to show your ID. https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voter-ID-requirements

I just voted early in Ohio a few days ago and that same list is hanging from the wall, no drivers license needed

Re:Can't fish Ethernet? Use "invisible" fiber instead on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:24PM (#50347647)
Kind of cements the point, but I also thought "why take a picture of everything else but the fiber?". Probably should have highlighted it a bit more, like I'd like a close up of it running across the trim
Probably sending a page, like to old school pagers. Though I'm not sure if people actually use pagers on the receiving end. If you sniff POCSAG radio traffic with an SDR a good amount of the traffic are alerts from various industrial sensors
The left has shifted left, and expected the window to follow them.
It's very clear, people that want to think their echo chamber perfectly represents actual reality just choose not to understand
You'd have to have the most selective feed of only small, esoteric subs to think it isn't

They could call it XCode. Oh wait...

Sure it was Amazon? Sounds like a scam

Re:My USB Drive Has a Hidden Encrypted Vault on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @11:26PM (#49001484)
I'm pretty sure the meme WAS the message. What other messages are being distributed through random meme sharing, where the recipient has to know it contains some secondary hidden message and requires the means to decode it?!
Yes, please do so. Because there's plenty of Democrat majority Congresses in that time range that chose to not renew the supply

Re:Welcome to Gentoo is Rice, the Volume goes to 11 here on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @04:14PM (#48665064)
I remember getting a kick out of that back in the day. Even as a Gentoo user that built from stage 1 and over obsessed about my use flags and kernel settings lol

Though I thought it had a section in it about --funroll-loops, but I just be remembering another page

Re:Driving in America Is Headlight Hell on Thursday June 11, 2026 @06:47PM (#48497446)
Outside of the decades long trend of overly bright headlights, I've noticed a more recent uptick of drivers seemingly deliberately leaving their high beams on full time. Not sure if it's "keeping up with the Joneses" or just people with older headlights that can't see them over the bright ones, but I'm blinded by at least one car with clear brights on every night drive recently

I will say, while there's now more overly bright headlights of varying degrees of blinding, it's better then when every truck started buying HID headlights and putting them in normal headlight housings. Felt like there was a period of time where headlights were either the normal tone, or a super bright light hitting you from all directions

Re:CISA Admin Leaked AWS GovCloud Keys on GitHub on Tuesday May 19, 2026 @01:48PM (#48196633)
Yes, DOGE invented storing lists of text passwords and uploading them somewhere. What a monumental cost savings innovation, surely never been done before!
It's accurate, so why wouldn't they?
Re: on Friday May 01, 2026 @01:18PM (#47977375)
This post is very timely, as I got the itch to setup and play simtower literally last week.

I used dosbox to install Windows 3.1, then installed simtower in that. It's not the native window manager integration you'd get in wine, but worked very well. Some ui glitches but nothing that affected usability.

Worth noting I'm running Linux

I always wonder how different it would look for the myriad of failed open source projects like that, if they had just picked a more marketable name
These kind of comments do not belong here
KDE uses Phabricator, or at least did the last time I contributed. Worked pretty well in the collaboration aspect for submitting a change, getting code owners to review and giving feedback. I was able to jump in as a brand new contributor and get a change merged. The kind of change that would have been a PR from a fork in GitHub.

However I got the distinct feeling the whole stack would not fit as well into an enterprise environment, nor would the tooling around it work well for devs on Windows machines that just want to get commits out there. It's a perfect fit for that kind of project but I don't think it would be a great GitHub replacement for an enterprise shop that doesn't have software as it's core business

It's the same technique that people on Reddit use to take down subreddits that don't agree with the carefully curated "hive mind".

> We get it, all lives matter.

I don't understand what you're getting at here

I mean, he basically said directly that he likes Haskell lol
You're narrowing the pool by only hiring specific races or sexes. Not widening it.

Do you believe that hiring currently excludes those races and sexes? Because that's explicitly illegal, and has been for a long time

Yeah carry on got the stupid liquid ban that's still around, but I don't think much if anything got banned from checked luggage after 9/11. Just the standard stuff like batteries and other things that could have issues in an unpressurized non temperature controlled hold.

Even carry on got a lot better than it used to be in the days right after that. Like I'm pretty sure they had banned lighters for a bit (and a lot of people assume they still are) but they're explicitly allowed and I throw mine right into the scanner bin every time I fly. Not even being able to carry in a sealed bottle of water and having to take your shoes off is stupid, but about the extent of what's left. No more keeping all liquids (what even counts as a liquid?) in a ziplock bag and having to take it out, and even laptops can stay in with the new scanners they're rolling out

I've carried on an inflatable life vest with an active CO2 cartridge and that's also listed as fine. Though it did get flagged and secondary screened because it was in my bag, even though they don't say you have to leave it out.

In general the more you fly if you pay attention, you can pretty much know what will trigger it if you put it in your bag. Metal water bottle in the bag? Your bag is getting pulled, every time. I've even told them right where to look lol. Left out and it goes right through.

That hasn't changed, they could still bring a bottle back if they choose
Where did you get that idea? First one I picked to look up (Saudi Arabia) does, and I guarantee all the rest do as well

Both of those are real things that have real examples
