Zotero is an open-source project that develops software to help people collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share their research. Our software is recommended by most universities and used by millions of students, scholars, scientists, and researchers worldwide.
We're looking for a JavaScript developer to work on Zotero "translators" — the pieces of code that let people save high-quality metadata and files to their Zotero libraries from across the web with a single click. If you like web scraping, APIs, data formats, and exploring sites in the browser devtools, this would be up your alley. As a core Zotero developer, you'll also have the ability to work across Zotero's vast ecosystem and help shape the future of the project.
This is an open-ended contract role that can scale up and down in hours based on availability and workload.
What Zotero 7 will continue to support for plugins is full access to the Mozilla platform internals, unlike WebExtensions, but Zotero 7 is based on Firefox 102 ESR and will be updated to 115 ESR later, so platform changes like this do apply. The reason all plugins have to be updated for Zotero 7 is the massive architectural changes in Firefox over the last few years, most notably removal of XUL overlays. This change might require some minor additional updates, but it's probably not a big deal.

Yep, post to the Zotero Forums at https://forums.zotero.org with any questions.
They're in the Indexing section of the linked Google page, just formatted in a particularly unreadable manner:
https://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/inclusion.html#in...
That will let you specify a PDF (`citation_pdf_url`) as well.
Should be mostly self-explanatory, but you can see Zotero's mappings here:
https://github.com/zotero/translators/blob/b18eeac0f770c698f...
> I wish there was a way I could provide the cite in CSL!
We're planning to support `<link>` elements to any supported format — basically a modern replacement for unAPI, which went defunct before CSL could be listed as an option — but CSL wouldn't let you specify a PDF anyway. And most sites want the search engine indexing they get from embedded metadata.

> Syncing that to Zotero servers is kind of like giving back? I always thought that data might help improve Zotero's own auto-fill functionalities, which I'd like helping with.
No, we don't expose your data to anyone else. (And tools that try to do that usually just end up filling people's libraries with junk data.)
You should sync Zotero if you want to 1) access your library on other devices, 2) collaborate with others, and/or 3) have a real-time backup of your Zotero data.

Historically the solution was to use the bookmarklet [2], but you might need to disable "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" in the Safari settings for that to work reliably.
But yes, the beta iOS app [3] supports full saving of metadata and PDFs via the Share sheet.

If you have an existing Mac app, it might be worth it, but personally, there's no chance that I would bother porting my own standalone WebExtensions to Safari under the current system, whereas I went to the trouble of doing so ($99/year fee and all) for the legacy framework, even though I don't really use Safari. Maybe Apple is OK losing large numbers of smaller extensions, but for me, it just means I'd never seriously consider Safari as an alternative to Firefox or Chrome.
