You clearly have enver spent time in Honduras
I can see this. I knew someone who was homeless for a time.

I asked her where she slept. She said "you don't sleep". You don't even have to run an experiment to know that sleep deprivation, even in your own home, causes psychosis. Now add the shock of being exposed to filth for the first time, poor climate control (homeless don't walk around with multiple layers of Patagonia and a nice backpack to stash them in as it warms up), the very real threat of sexual or physical assault, the shocking awareness that you are now "one of them" and know that a sizable percentage of your acquaintances would immediately distance themselves from you if they knew your plight. We're not even talking about food and vitamin quality here.

This isn't pressing your thumb. This is throwing away half the scale
Re:Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs on Friday January 10, 2025 @04:14PM (#42660311)
So this is an example of what not to do.

1. Violate the law more blatantly than anyone else. 94% of new jobs went to POC? So what, 50% of the population shared 6% of the jobs? This sounds like apartheid era South Africa.

2. Create a backlash where the largest population and richest segment is so angry, it uses all its resources to absolutely destroy this.

Nice going.

Re:The Stigma of Choosing Trade School over College on Friday March 08, 2019 @01:50AM (#19335643)
This is often dragged out whenever "liberal education" is justified. It's overrated. My friends who went to college are not $50-$200k more expansively educated than those who didn't.

Also, libraries, cheap Kindle books, YouTube, and other internet resources are freely/cheaply available.

Those who want to learn will do so and can for the price of a tablet or less. This reminds me of the scene in Good Will Hunting where the Harvard student is brought down for his overpriced education that could be gotten for a few bucks in late fees at the library.

Re:Why is the wedding industry so hard to disrupt? on Tuesday March 05, 2019 @09:54AM (#19310873)
You can't put a website in front of it and call it disruption. Every one of those things you mentioned gets bought after you have physically spoken with someone to give yourself the confidence they are legit.

It's such an important day, people want to make sure they'll be taken care of as special, unlike say, a cleaning service.

Poachers are mostly criminal gangs, not mothers feeding dying babies. This shows a profound lack of awareness of the area. It's not some massive group of half starving people.

Also when you are dealing with the extinction of a species, drastic measures are necessary. Are you saying you prefer the economic well being of every single person on Earth over the right of a species to exist?

That is indeed twisted morality.

There is zero entitlement to assets from sperm donor. This is very clearly spelled out in law.
Re:The Rise of the Tech-Savvy Parent on Sunday February 17, 2019 @07:33AM (#19184149)
Yup. There was a time I could write out a win.ini file from memory and understanding all the options. Today, doing the same on any platform would be impossible.

It's been many years. Computers have gotten far more complex and reliable. My uncle knew how to rebuild his car engine, I don't. Same thing.

Re:The infrastructural humiliation of America on Monday February 04, 2019 @12:07PM (#19078092)
Why wouldn't you be financially responsible for your own property? This doesn't make sense.
Re:Cruel and Unusual Punishment on Friday February 01, 2019 @12:27AM (#19051876)
100%. Said pedophile's cure should be used far and wide. I am 100% certain inventions used widely today have been made by pedophiles.

If the person is convicted, their assets can be siezed and they can be imprisoned. This is not the same as allowing them to continue to benefit by refusing to prosecute, which is what happened in the past.

Re:Cruel and Unusual Punishment on Friday February 01, 2019 @12:21AM (#19051852)
He's not being extremely callous. He's just saying your opinion shouldn't be forced on him. The suffering of others doesn't need to be his problem. We can discourage that with prison and fines. No need to drag the consumer in on a forced march through some rabid vigilante social assassination.
Re:Cruel and Unusual Punishment on Friday February 01, 2019 @12:17AM (#19051818)
You absolutely are memory holing them. If you decide I'm not not allowed to see older Cosby episodes on your platform, new people can't watch it and it's little by little erased from cultural memory.
Re:Cruel and Unusual Punishment on Friday February 01, 2019 @12:14AM (#19051804)
Not even close to what was written. The article couldn't have been more clear.
Re:Why Do Rich People Love Endurance Sports? (2017) on Tuesday January 29, 2019 @05:06AM (#19025155)
I disagree. I think the rich like endurance sports because they're safe. My father was a triathlete. He could push himself to his heart's content and never worry about taking a kick to the temple.

Another HUGE factor is age. Rich people tend to be older. Older people can do endurance much easier than say, combat sports.

Cost has increased. Health care is a huge part. Housing another. Higher pay to compete with industry another in select fields.
Re:I was mistaken for a call girl on Saturday January 19, 2019 @10:57AM (#18947610)
Not the more they ask for equality, the more behavior is directed at past transgressions that had nothing to do with a guy.

Discriminatory divorce laws keep men from marrying. I see this very openly.

Overcorrection with MeToo will make many men hesitate to interact with a woman if he gets a vibe that she might misread his actions. It will also decrease interactions by men who planned on harrassing her though.

Re:I was mistaken for a call girl on Saturday January 19, 2019 @10:51AM (#18947579)
They didn't target one person. What she wrote was quite clear.
Re:I was mistaken for a call girl on Saturday January 19, 2019 @10:46AM (#18947560)
Do you find anything consistent among these women who eat alone? Age, how busy/rushed they appear, how tough they appear, etc? Would you guess they are single with few friends in the area?

Perhaps they mostly just have more confidence in going out alone.

Completely different wording. Risk vs excess risk. You can say the same about femininity. Excess reliance on others to do necessary but undesireable things, excess avoidance of conflict, even if it means never standing up to someone who is using/abusing you, not willing to serve in the military as a soldier in times of need, etc.

This smells like bullshit. Anything in excess is bad. Excess individuality kills cooperation, excess demand on cooperation and by extension conformity kills independent though.

Re:A Guide for Adults Going to College on Tuesday January 08, 2019 @02:36PM (#18858805)
I don't know where you went to school, but I did some CC and completed a BS. It was the opposite for me. CC treated people like hs kids, at uni, I did all the research I could desire. Classes were way harder, the subject matter infinitely more in depth, etc.
Some people treat it like a university, others like a vocational school. Have stats for both.

Just be careful with stats. They are easily gamed.

Re:Living and working in Sweden as engineers on Tuesday January 01, 2019 @11:12PM (#18804130)
I find this strange. You are essentially saying caring for your own children isn't something you should do, something only poorer people should do. This sounds like hiring a mercenary army instead of having a domestic volunteer army.
Re:Living and working in Sweden as engineers on Tuesday January 01, 2019 @11:09PM (#18804119)
If he left, why not report?
Re:Living and working in Sweden as engineers on Tuesday January 01, 2019 @11:07PM (#18804109)
This is a very distorted view of the US. Very few live in SV or NYC. My wife simply stayed home for a few years and we easily afforded a nice house.
Re:I Was a Cable Guy. I Saw the Worst of America on Sunday December 30, 2018 @05:29PM (#18791733)
Ever hear the saying "when the whole world stinks, you have shit on your nose"?

The world is unlikely to be how any one person likes it. Learning to live with it is a good skill.

Re:On Being Accused (Neil DeGrasse Tyson) on Monday December 03, 2018 @02:21AM (#18586944)
Really? I bet many people would find it funny. Perhaps not you or your circle, but you don't define the world, his country, state, or community.
They start by not borrowing $150k for college. You can also look to live in less expensive places and in smaller houses, but yes, housing has increased
Re:I Used to Be Homeless on Wednesday November 14, 2018 @12:28PM (#18451679)
They're not more efficient. It's a combination of willingness to work for less, longer hours to make up for it, and pooling resources with extended families that enables them to get by

A big part is you don't know who can learn to code and enjoy it. Not everyone is cut out for it.
