Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:11AM (#50305036)
Anthropic (and others) mass harvested source code from around the internet while ignoring licenses to build their product. That's of course allowed (by them).

Using the trained model to create certain types of software that they already harvested, not allowed?

What's the difference between having the model make a game and writing any other software? It's like trying to say you can only use our model to write new stories but not fanfiction when they trained the model on the original works which would allow the fanfiction to be produced in the first place.

The point is it should be free. Public roads are free.
Because the yen is weak is a big reason why visiting is appealing. Its also a big reason why their population is dwindling.

The govt is just trying to point fingers at foreigners to hide their weakness. I think recently they made a big deal about foreign owned real estate then quickly forgot about that talking point when their own study showed it equated to something like .05% of their total housing.

Re:Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:34PM (#49582189)
I think the time for this space is here. The appetite to depart from subscriptions and loaning your personal data to ad/ai companies is stronger than ever.

Currently, a lot of this space is docker compose based and simply inaccessible to so many who may otherwise be interested. Whether or not it's this project or another, I hope something gathers enough steam soon to truly break the barriers to entry.

Re:You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @08:40AM (#49535370)
It adds more context about how much of a scam insurance is and how they come off as hypocrites for liking to use one form of ai for themselves (camera detection) while disliking another (customers trying to get more fair payouts)
How about regulate plastic so it doesn't end up in the river in the first place?

Worrying about cleanup without worrying about why we have to clean it up in the first place is a losing approach. It reads as just 'recycle better' without wondering why consumers have that burden in the first place.

Re:Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @11:21PM (#49356265)
Can we just ban algorithms for content and go back to chronological feeds circa 2004 Facebook?

Or maybe ban all content that the user isn't explicitly subscribed to.

Those both have problems too, I'm sure.

You can on graphene. It's not uncommon to use Google keyboard this way for example.
I don't see that as an option, but I'm not a GrapheneOS power user.
Re:Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database on Monday July 20, 2026 @11:07AM (#48979930)
It's no different anywhere. Security isn't valued since it's just an email and a .01% or less income fine.

The amount of times my SSN and correlated info has been leaked and I've been offered a free year or credit monitoring is depressing.

Re:Slate EV truck starts at $24,950 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @11:15AM (#48661249)
I am glad there is some viable disruption in the auto space here, but I am also really disappointed.

A new 4wd kei style truck is ~10k, with a bigger bed. I know its apples to oranges, but damn do I hate the ridiculous regulatory capture around small vehicles and trucks we have in the US.

Did we blame the kids for smoking back in the day too, or recognize the harm and regulate it out of their lives?
Re:Japan's railways stayed one while splitting apart on Friday June 19, 2026 @09:47AM (#48598550)
Wait till you hear about how we fund roads and how much it costs to drive on most of them, lol.
Re:I Hate Compilers on Thursday June 18, 2026 @10:24AM (#48585859)
From what I gather you fear determinate systems will guide future Nixos dev like google steers chromium or am I way off base?
Re:You Don't Love Systemd Timers Enough on Tuesday June 02, 2026 @08:52AM (#48369591)
Have you been defining them directly in your flake.nix file? I too am on nixos but I keep all my configurations in their native format and symlink them with nix, that way I can take and reuse that config on a non nixos system easily.

The problem I have found is that nixos doesn't seem to pickup and run systemd timers and services placed into the ~/.config/systems/user folder and additionally things like WantedBy=default.target have no effect.

So after I restart all my services manually on reboot I agree, systems timers are cool.

Re:Getting arrested in Japan on Saturday May 09, 2026 @07:04PM (#48079144)
You think our prison system is much better? I mean hell, we're currently shipping people off to prison camps in other countries without due process.
Re:Why Japan has such good railways on Saturday April 18, 2026 @10:21AM (#47816144)
Japan railways are mostly (all?) privately owned.
Re:We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git on Friday April 10, 2026 @09:52AM (#47718192)
Not to mention the irony that they need $17M to try and recreate/improve what Linus built in a week.
Re:Trump's global tariffs struck down by US Supreme Court on Friday February 20, 2026 @10:36AM (#47089328)
Is it all speculation still at this point for what happens next? Like are they immediately void, does the govt have to repay importers the now illegal loss?

Or is this just another "trump did illegal thing but nothing will happen" kind of scenario?

Re:Norway EV Push Nears 100 Percent: What's Next? on Friday January 30, 2026 @09:30AM (#46824826)
Tires cause a large amount of pollution and noise.

More so than a typical engine above 25 to 30mph.

So sure, electric helps, but as noted there is more traffic than before, which doesn't.

The reason likely here is water. It was the same with foxcon. They want access to Lake Michigan.
A human driver in a school zone during morning drop off would be scanning the sidewalks and paying attention to children that disappear behind a double parked suv or car in the first place, no?

As described by the nhtsa brief:

"within two blocks of a Santa Monica, CA elementary school during normal school drop off hours; that there were other children, a crossing guard, and several double-parked vehicles in the vicinity"

The "that there were other children, a crossing guard, and several double-parked vehicles in the vicinity" means that waymo is driving recklessly by obeying the speed limit here (assuming it was 20mph) in a way that many humans would not.

Re:Allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15 on Saturday January 10, 2026 @12:01PM (#46567451)
They make little sense on any road though.
Re:Show HN: Automated license plate reader coverage in the USA on Thursday December 11, 2025 @07:33AM (#46230607)
A camera doesn't stop those acts though, it may only discourage those who know about it at a huge cost of privacy and rights.

How about we build better infrastructure and regulate vehicles since those do actually stop this behavior. Most of those red lights and stoplights in the US should be roundabouts. Narrower lanes and other traffic calming measures should be much more pervasive. Vehicle size, specifically bumper height is out of control.

Compare US traffic and pedestrian deaths to the rest of the world, or at least a lot of EU countries. Its embarrassing.

I was all for this legislation, thinking the positives outweighed the cost, but after reading the list of affected services, I now disagree.

Why didn't they just legislate that all social media apps content must be like Facebook in 2005. No recommendations, chronological timeline only, and you only see posts from users you explicitly added. That would have benefited everyone forever, and not enabled some small subset of apps to collect your govt id or the law to be irrelevant when the next popular social network comes along.

They effectively banned only the popular cigarette brands, instead of regulating nicotine.

If services would argue this would make them all the same, then add a clause where the user can opt in to have an algorithm shove content at them like now if they are over 18.

This way everyone can use the basic service for true socializing, but the harmful stuff is actually regulated out by default.

Too much money etc for this to ever happen, but geez they could have done a lot better.

I wish there was regulation that you have to sell and maintain a working product, so that open source devs don't have to waste their time fixing proprietary products.
Likewise on all downward business signals at my employer. I was thankfully in school during 09, but this easily feels like the biggest house of cards I have ever experienced as an adult.
I don't think tax is that high for that income bracket but your point still stands for the rules of the current system. I agree with your sentiment there are way better ways to redistribute wealth.

Just dont discount what several hundred bucks means to way too many people in such a prosperous country.

As shown by the covid payments. $900 a year is a lot of money to a lot of folks.

Heck annual social security average is 24k a year, so you are talking about nearly 4% more money for just those people alone.

Re:Is Germany on the brink of banning ad blockers? on Friday August 15, 2025 @09:45AM (#44912347)
How does it make sense? If I buy a book I'm entitled to rip out pages and black marker words. What's the difference to removing text or images of my choice while viewing a website?
