Re:Protect student privacy: ban eproctoring on Friday July 09, 2021 @09:34AM (#27783495)
Given that "bane" is a nearly infinitely more common word than "eproctoring" I bet you (and I) are in the majority.
Re:The Sandia Cooler (2016) on Sunday June 27, 2021 @11:54AM (#27652557)
A linked video claims that the commercial version attempts to transfer heat from one rotating metal surface to another (the the part that connects to the CPU and the bottom of the spinning thingy) separated by an extremely thin layer of air. This is "supposed to" transfer heat as if the metal is touching but "doesn't see to work very well in practice"
Re:The Nokia N900: the future that wasn’t on Wednesday March 17, 2021 @08:53PM (#26498644)
I had one of these and your note of "a cellular modem connected directly to main memory" makes me laugh. I didn't know that until now but I think that clears up why phone calls could crash the phone in some circumstances.

Like you said it was a fantastic little linux terminal - great for SSH and it was certainly fun and novel to have a linux CLI on my cell phone.

To clarify, do you find Lyra @ 3kbs to be more unpleasant overall than Speex at @ 3kbps?
What makes you unsure of the risk was worth it?
Re:Show HN: 32 Books Recommended by Elon Musk on Sunday December 13, 2020 @11:13PM (#25413467)
Did he really? I think Elon's a dummy but is he really so dumb as to suggest 4 game of thrones books?
Re:Why software ends up complex on Sunday December 13, 2020 @10:39PM (#25413265)
Software ends up complex since it attempts to model the real world which is oh so complex
You serious think that taking away the stream of income that has put trillions of usd in the hands of cartels / organized crime won't have a huge impact?
Re:Google fired employees for union activity, says US agency on Saturday December 12, 2020 @06:01AM (#25397464)
Illegal but also very possibly without consequence. The NLRB has no independent enforcement power, sadly: https://www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/what-we-do
Re:Google fired employees for union activity, says US agency on Saturday December 12, 2020 @05:52AM (#25397415)
Neither. Google is selectively enforcing their security policy. The article explains: "It fired a number of staff for violating data security - but the NLRB said the rules were applied only to those engaging in union activity."
Re:EME, CDM, AES, CENC, and Keys – Building Blocks of DRM on Tuesday November 03, 2020 @12:04AM (#24976503)
You're completely right but the source code doesn't even need to be leaked. Just reverse engineered. How else would we pirate movies from Netflix/Amazon/etc :)
Obviously not the OP but I think that a longform version of this would be an entire book/college level course. I wish I could learn how to reverse state of the art obfuscation in a single, long post but that's just not how it works.
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Wednesday December 11, 2019 @06:41AM (#21761572)
The operative word was "cool".
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @08:25PM (#21758678)
All the downsides of cryptocurrency and paper money rolled into a banknote that can be break. Imagine if a large bill could become worthless since a little chip inside got hit by a stray cosmic ray.
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @08:22PM (#21758659)
It is a particularly strong scam in the crypto space. I'm very impressed with the innovation in their area.
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @08:20PM (#21758646)
I hate crypto currency and I love this. It's a way to project all the insanely bad parts of crypto (if you hold it you own it) into the physical world. If general btc/eth transactions are a very very complex version of SWIFT this is the same for paper money. I can buy coke with my bitcoins but I can't do a cool in person coke buy with bitcoins(and/or ETH). Kong solves my problem.
Re:Show HN: Kong – Physical Cryptocurrency on Tuesday December 10, 2019 @08:17PM (#21758627)
You got it - these are an excellent way to buy cocaine. Absolutely worthless (to a petty thief) and useful for buying drugs. Love it.
