News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

This is drastically different from how I live and work. I may do over 100 (Kagi) searches a day. I use Claude too but I am just faster searching after decades of experience.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:02PM (#50298019)
What an incredible actor. He will be missed.
I got the "login to access old reddit" block the other day.

I'm not logging into my personal reddit on my work computer, so you've lost me.

Proton Pass, not their email service. Although I suspect things like the Cloudflare Email Service will expand by next year too.
> Anyone have a suggestion as to where to re-home our email?

Fastmail Family should be a good fit for you.

If they can vibe code the project without engineering then surely their users can too, right? I currently pay for Proton Pass but when mine renews next year I'd rather just give the money to Opus 6.5.

Even if an employee has the authority to make a decision, executive leadership should still have the legal right to terminate someone if they disagree with that choice. Let's not make running a business illegal.
Re:Nvidia Nemotron 3.5 Transcribe: open ASR for 40 languages on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:32AM (#50288764)
Voxtral 3 is probably the better product, but this is cheap!
Re:Nim Version 2.4.0 Released on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:16AM (#50288501)
Huge release. Congrats!
Re:United Starlink Tracker on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:30PM (#50284242)
According to tech Twitter, millions of people are going to choose United because they will do productive work on the plane if they had Starlink. Meanwhile on my flights with Starlink, everyone is just watching movies as normal. I'm sure the 1% with laptops could really use this, but as a capitalist I'm still just sorting flights by lowest price and best departure time. The hype over this has been a bit crazy.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:28PM (#50266090)
Well put (although it reads like AI) with the data to back it up. I feel this, too.
Re:Lost Apple Project on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:06AM (#50260487)
But are they tasty?

12 seconds for a pelican on low. Pretty good.
The snapshot here is 10 months old. Most everything near me is incorrect.

Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro puts open-source AI a month behind the best on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:26PM (#50222786)
It's at least 4 months away on https://artificialanalysis.ai/evaluations/omniscience and many other benches. Anyone stating that its just a few weeks back is just cherry picking a single benchmark.
Re:CanI.RootMy.TV? on Monday October 19, 2026 @02:35AM (#50149085)
The site says:

> RootMyTV (v1/v2) has been patched for years, and your TV is almost certainly not vulnerable.

I really like pi, though it does require some time in setting it up. But it has greatly reduced my token spend. The relevant Deepseek Harness https://www.deepseek.com/en/harness/ I hear is also good and popular.
Re:tsc-ts: TypeScript written in TypeScript on Saturday October 17, 2026 @01:27PM (#50133077)
I don't know whats a meme or not anymore..

This is a great model. I know we are all looking for the next best thing, but I'd be pretty happy running this for awhile.
You've got to wonder what prevented a single human from ever even looking at the agents they are running.
Re:I changed my view on traditional code review on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:41AM (#50088466)

I'm sorry, I am still going to leave comments on bad code even if it "works". If it's not me, then its agents reviewing the diff for minimization opportunities along with best practices skills and checks.

Because it generated at least 400 comments on Hackernews
Re:Character.ai files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @03:55AM (#50068213)
2 years in, the founders and 30 researchers took Google's $2.7b and left. Then they had to ban kids which was probably most of their userbase. Yet they were still putting $1m/mo on the corporate cards with 86 full time bay area employees on ~$278k average base, and almost $100k owed to DoorDash. lol
Re:GPT-6 Astra Helped Me Jailbreak My Kindle on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:03PM (#50065670)
I can't get GPT-6 models to do any work with compilers or anything deemed hacky, so I'm surprised it completed this without any refusals. I guess since it was just off-the-shelf stuff, it went through.
Work smarter, not harder. Mine even preserved the commit history.
My agent did it in one prompt: it git cloned https://github.com/open-pencil/open-pencil
Yes, I use open-source projects, and as part of that, I either find bugs or want features. I don't think an agent should be recreating or forking React, for example, just for me - that's not realistic.
Re:Deno Is Joining Cloudflare on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:33PM (#50023963)
This is sad. I was a heavy user of Deno, though I recognized its likely downfall when they laid off a large part of their team in the last year.
