Re:Merge tag 'inclusive-terminology' into Linux kernel on Sunday July 12, 2020 @11:21AM (#23812009)
good answer. (edit: i wasn't being facetious, i agreed with your comment.) and for anyone complaining about "wasting time" on this issue of terminology, i'd point them to the millions of hours lost due to tabs vs. spaces debates. it's not a waste of time, you just don't recognize it as important. defer to those who do.
The problem is that the "public health consequences of having the schools closed on the kids" have not been defined, yet alone measured, and thus we have no basis for comparison against the fairly well-established risks of opening schools. The director is making a political statement based on hunches rather than evaluating risks based on science.
I couldn’t find anything documented about the consequences of having schools closed, only the consequences of them being open. According to internal CDC documents, “fully reopening schools and universities remained the “highest risk” for the spread of the coronavirus” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/10/us/politics/trump-schools...
what of those who don't quarantine, get covid, and pass the virus on to their elderly relatives? would you make the same trade?
love these tools, have used them on multiple projects, thanks so much for your work.
bit of a difference between educating people about nazism vs. giving actual neo-nazis a space to use for communication and recruitment.
I agree. There's already so much content and trash on Youtube that it will be a huge investment to make it worthwhile, assuming you are lucky. Creating structured, high-quality course content in a field not covered well by existing courses on sites like teachable and udemy will still be hard work, but with a higher chance of success.

Could police sketch artists use this as a tool?

the comment was referring to failure in execution, not necessarily failure in choosing the correct approach. it's hard to argue that sweden shouldn't have been more careful with its elderly and vulnerable, even if going for herd immunity.

on the other hand many places recorded record low injuries and fatalities from car crashes due to quarantine. i wonder how it balances out in the end.

bad analogy. trump has far, far greater power than any talk show host and is advocating violence against americans.

you were of course correct, but your professor was simply illustrating a point- of whether we can trust our senses, of how we truly "know" something. philosophy often brings up "commonsensical" questions such as these. he probably didn't reply to you because he was bored from hearing the same smart alecky response every year :)
you're right, not all of us can be super star devs (i certainly am not) but we can apply their techniques, mainly stay healthy and never stop learning.
given the numerous posts about age discrimination on hn, i'm delighted to hear your story and wish you many more years of happy programming. as a whipper-snapper 40-something developer, it gives me hope and motivation.

One offering from The Great Courses that the HN crowd might appreciate is "Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature":

The professor is excellent.

tongue in cheek. lately musk has reminded me not to have heros :(

this is an awesome take- musk has been playing 4d chess all along, getting hard-core conservatives to buy into renewable energy..

i would also prefer a more neutral grey. i'm curious as to how designers choose greys in their palette. is there something wrong with just using equal amounts of rgb, e.g. #666666 or hsl(0, 0%, 50%)? do these values not show up as "true grey" on some displays?

bulma is amazing. clean and elegant, super easy to set up. i use it for prototypes and later often realize i just don't need anything more.
Ask HN: Is there a search engine which includes only what the Chinese government wants me to see?
I was surprised to hear of blatant Covid-related insider trading by individuals in government, either some really are too stupid to know better or they feel impunity. I fear it's the latter.
Re:Show HN: This Word Does Not Exist on Wednesday May 13, 2020 @06:14PM (#23172455)
Years back there was a trend of using blurred profile photos, which could be "unblurred" if some criteria had been met. This is a logical extension of that idea and I wish I'd thought of it back then.

However, I don't like the idea that "women control the blur". While I think I understand the reasoning, I think it would be better to automate the process. For instance, gradually decreasing the blur based on number of interactions, with participants slowly "resolving" and becoming clearer to one another as they get to know one another.

In this way, each person involved "controls the blur" by simply choosing whether or not to interact with the other person again.

And btw what about same-sex interactions where there is no woman or two women?

Re:Rebuilding our tech stack for the new facebook.com on Friday May 08, 2020 @06:40PM (#23120326)
It's by design. Reddit doesn't want you using the website. They want you to download the app. As numerous annoying popups and notifications will tell you when visiting the website (especially on mobile).

Yeah, I'm sorry but the idea of dealing with linux compatibility on a laptop or running Windows is a complete dealbreaker for me. despite how bad the macbook pros get i just can't switch.
yes, not only is that site referenced in the article but their about page is very informative as to how their model differs from IHME: https://covid19-projections.com/about/
