News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The very clear evidence for security is obvious to anyone who has done a meaningful, deployed body of work.

Whatever the reason, Claude (Code in terminal; my experience domain), despite explicit direction:

- "never leak any secrets" - "never display any passwords" - "everything to the right of the first '=' sign on any given line is a value; never echo or process it bare"

… etc.

Ahh yes, it is the technology that is the easiest gate to break down first. *takes puff on elaborately rare-wood pipe*

I remember long ago, when I first met a computer person in college and he told me about PCs vs UNIX, I asked him, "why don't they make it run on a PC?"

Running an open model locally on your own machine, and having it augment-train itself using your own sessions as the training input.

Author states, “Single developer projects can build to the caliber and consistency of large development teams.”

When I, as a single person, can produce a project in one month that would have taken a team of four people three months to produce, why would I care about token cost? I’m now spending $500/month instead of $40,000 month to get the same thing 3x faster. $500 for a project instead of $120,000. (Assumes my cost, $40k is the other three people)

It’s a no-brainer —- use frontier all the time.

Interesting -- seems to be a "Docker for music production" product in there somewhere
Agree. Opus 4.8 could make nice little toy and demo apps. This app had a lot of surfaces and pipeline, Postgres, vector search, S3 -- couldn't handle that. Fable 5 is still a lot of work and you have to check it, but it really does perform at senior eng level. Shipping good size features daily.
Re:AI is removing the middle class of software engineering on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @06:58PM (#49279724)
First day of work, immediately Ultracode refactor the entire codebase, do a massive 800k line force push to main, git comment, "Hey guys! First day, first commit -- fixed codebase with Claude. Hope this works!"
I've found Fable 5 to be so much better than 4.8.

For building a full stack custom CRM and media pipeline tool with video conversion, transcription, and indexing. Supabase, AWS, Meili, NextJS, GCS - lots of surfaces and planes.

4.8 basically couldn't do it, I abandoned the project as the fallback was, "current business processes".

With F5 it's been 4 weeks and almost ready for production release.

The high-level structures of writing are prose, poetry, and drama.

Cross cutting them is the purpose, these are not mutex: exposition, narrative, description, conviction.

There's also straight rambling nonsense.

Were you using Fable 5?
Re:Git rebase -I is not that scary on Monday July 27, 2026 @10:17AM (#49070067)
Ha, how many years spent reading it as re-flog and not ref-log. Flog the git!
Re:Git rebase -I is not that scary on Sunday July 26, 2026 @08:25AM (#49057425)
Most developers just have a linear view of git, which is fine. Should I really care that origins are just named nodes on combined graphs? Like, I just want to check in my code before I have to merge someone else's.

Zero rebases since Fable 5.

Re:Em dashes are fucking amazing on Friday July 24, 2026 @11:42AM (#49037321)
Know the rules, fight the rules, I guess. More readable, but I’ve since regressed as tooling comes into play. Maybe it’s a good way to still use ems and differentiate from AI.

Only when responding to rants, i.e. pedantry for fun. Live a little!
Re:Em dashes are fucking amazing on Friday July 24, 2026 @10:10AM (#49035924)
I am personally a fan of space padded em-dash. Visually, semantically, it makes sense on all modern planes. There's an argument for line-break parsing.

Of course I recommend do-not-adopt, think Roman-cart-wheel-axle-width reasons.

Re:Em dashes are fucking amazing on Friday July 24, 2026 @10:06AM (#49035881)
Author failed to explain the dash universe and their semantic assignments.

- em dash: adjoining thought (Hey, so — <declaration>)

- en dash: expresses a range (1–100)

- dash: compounds word-parts (Sarbanes-Oxley)

I'd also like to see more concise philosophy around em v. ellipsis, "limerance" is poetic (and ironically antithetical to this "essay" … and what of parens?). In short, em is communication and ellipsis is personal.

I offer this feedback as a humorously offended fan of all sidecar prose (dash, ellipsis, parens, quotes, and meta typographical treatments) pre-AI era.

Finally, I'd love to hear from this author regarding modern use of period in modern comunication, with canonical use-case of bulleted list as example.

Is this faster than diskx inventory or other gui tools?

Not manually cleansing data and building apps with AI to do the parts you can't or don't want to do is a massive lift.

I can do things that were far beyond my reach — suddenly. Almost all at once.

"Now you can discover you suck at marketing and business" :D

Ironically, the text color choice on the website reflects exactly this kind of thinking.

Next level is to reach out directly and ask them if you can just sponsor directly with said micropayment ($20/month). SUrprisingly, most say no.

Your special kindness is not worth $20/month to even moderately successful creators.

Or, buy two Starbucks/month to set and forget

I pay YouTube Premium and get no ads there. It's totally worth it for me.

I get that they aren't performing less tracking on me, and they've labeled me as "will pay subscriptions for stuff".

But I get so much out of YouTube that's it's a no-brainer.

So obviously generated

Re:Thoughts and feelings around Claude Design on Saturday April 18, 2026 @06:45PM (#47820190)
Yah you get this inner platform effect where designers start unwittingly creating their own version of css using Figma and it gets really bespoke really fast.
Re:Thoughts and feelings around Claude Design on Saturday April 18, 2026 @06:43PM (#47820172)
I was making a new brand file in Figma and was about to define all the variables and aliases, paths, all that. Took one look at it and just made the 8 colors I needed and went on with the design.
