So you dont need developers when you use SaaS?

Opposite of “live small” usually means “each year bigger and better”, which kind of means geometric growth, which almost by definition seems unsustainable.

Trimming version does not trim whitespace indentation. I guess point goes to “tabs” camp.

You should check out IDEs :)

IDE takes plain old text as input, and lets the coder to interact with the model of the program.

1. Various graphical hints in text (highlighting keywords, selections, …)

2. Visualisation tools (draw database and class diagrams)

3. Navigation capabilities (go to implementation, definition etc)

4. Refactoring capabilities (“rename, “extract variable”, …)

In my view, IDE is already “book with diagrams”. (“Diagrams” can still be improved, but concept is really there)

Would you use a PC without any of keyboard hotkeys?

I’m not fanatical about this, I would use it if I would be forced by circumstances. But I would not be happy about it. And I still would try to educate/convince older colleagues that hotkeys make things quicker/easier/“reliabler”.

From your speculation of source of touchscreen hate, I see that you feel that tesla has superior car touchscreen experience. And I don't doubt that. But however good you can be with touchscreen, you can do even better if you also have bunch of physical buttons (in addition to touchscreen/must look then point device).

Probably we are like linux users. In total, over whole globe, we make up quite a sizeable number, but in each geographic location we are still a rare breed (not enough to get the enough momentum).
For ship, there is probable benefit (tradeoff) of making backup bridge easy - theoretically just a bunch of tablets.

True. Though realistically, regarding left-pad, in other languages I would expect left-pad to be part of string formatting package.
Russia’s relation with China will not be that of equals.

Russia will be just a gas station to China. And China being more authoritarian, will not be such easy target for kgb as Scholz/Merkel/Schroeder were.

Why? (5 “why”s in total)
Re:C23 is finished: Here is what is on the menu on Saturday August 06, 2022 @07:32AM (#32367128)
I like to imagine that their goal is similar, yet less ambitious: to keep C alive only for those who really need it.

Even if they fork the language, standard still provides the common baseline for all, which is useful.
They seem to be very positive influence on amzn

Other reasons for the a bit of noise: speed, simplicity and unambiguity of parsing. (Impacts compilation speed, ease of additional tool development, and ability to continue parsing partially incorrect code)

Was gp sarcastic? Are you sarcarstic? (I need an app for that..)
Edit: If neutron is likely to decay into. Why *neutrons* dont decay while being part of an atom? (Wouldn’t this be example of a structure that prevents decaying?)

It’s not bleeding edge raytracing stuff. “Get better hardware” is far from appropriate response.

Commenting mainly to say that I like this phrase very very much. Creative, Witty and at the same time so descriptive.

On the win32 point, it is adressed in the article:

> I also realized that there are two distinct senses of the word "narrow":

> - In terms of architectural connection (topology). For example, applications and physical networks are decoupled by the the Internet's narrow waist. They don't interface directly with each other.

> - In terms of the size of the concept. <snip> But the web is a large set of concepts (HTTP, HTML, SVG, etc.).

Re:The Math Myth (2016) on Monday June 06, 2022 @07:44PM (#31647987)
Point0. Learning without any memorization… I’m not sure if that is possible. One must hold several concepts inside the head to learn new ones.

Point1. Education system which would strive for bear minimum outcome would be something like “not everybody needs addition, cashiers can take care of that”. (You will cut calculus, somebody else will cut multiplication table)

Point2. which iq range education system is optimised for? (Fair discission; though hard politically). Gifted people are random in population. If you teach and test only the bare minimum content, which 99.9% of population passes with flying colors, then gifted are undertrained and also harder to spot, thus under-utilised.

Point3. Memorization is useful. Even if one understands the concept deeply, the “cheat sheet” inside the head (i.e. memorised info) makes things much much faster. Memorization is abit like muscle-memory and or caching.

Other factors to consider (at least theoretically possible):

- shorter week is part of compensation; (possibility to atract more or/and better employees).

- more people will start working/get hired;

- productivity is not uniform thoughout a day/week (tiredeness);

My best counterpoint at the same time is that intuitively I think that 1 person doing 5 days is more productive then 5 persons doing one day each, because communication/coordination does have a cost.

(Surely tradeoffs and optimal points vary from role to role; some tasks are easier to parallelise)

I assume taiwan exports faster chips to china. What prevents china to help out a friend in need? (I.e. Re export to russia)

conflating “creationists” to societies which dont recognize women as individual person..

is technically correct. The best kind of correct of course. But also a bit of blow below the belt.

(Especialy when there are plenty of shouting religious politicians, that could have been used in your argument)

solar and air-conditioning. Energy consumption correlates with production. A match made in heaven.
Interesting thougth about organisation growth.
Re:Norway to track all supermarket purchases? on Saturday June 04, 2022 @07:30PM (#31626233)
I kind of dont believe this (norway becoming authoritarian), but every power given to the government is like additional leverage in a stock market. With big leverage, if your unlucky, you feel it so much more.

Murdered by which caste? Allegedly of course. Brahmin or somebody else?
