Re:Ask HN: How do I/you prep for the energy crisis in EU?
on Thursday September 08, 2022 @10:27AM (#32766023)
At this point maybe nobody knows this for sure.
IF industry is going to have an energy-problem, then everybody else WILL have a financial problem (and many become poor - we heave just now 9% inflation and industry is running fine, what will happen if it isn’t running anymore).
And IF gas for private heating will be scarce, then everybody WILL have a problem with electricity (since many will heat with electric and kill our grid). It’s not for sure but MAYBE we have a problem.
So maybe it’s a good idea to have a plan B to warm some canned food up. Or how we say in Germany: Besser man hat als man hätte.

Re:Nuclear is back on the table for a green future
on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @12:37PM (#31755544)
And the other months it's a not-so-strong dip in production (Jan 16%, Feb 31%, Mar 57%, Apr 94%, Jun 100%, Jul 100%, Aug 87%, Sep 60%, Okt 41%, Nov 22%, Dec 13%).
This means (for germany) we have to install more than 170% PV and store 3 months worth of energy for half a year (or install 800% and don't store anything). It's just a very rough estimation, but it's clear that one can't compare the cost of 1kWh PV to 1kWh nuclear (at least if one doesn't live in the desert).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_electricity_by_sourc...
Depends. With just the cost per kWh is photovoltaic cheaper, but you would need additional storage for the nighttime, so it would become more expensive than nuclear. Also this didn’t account for winter time (in Germany photovoltaic make 5-10% compared to summer) and storing a half year worth of energy is going to be funny.(this will cost way way more than nuclear) A nuclear power plant could run 24/7 the whole year.

I’m with you.
Many people constantly complain about windows but most of them still using it. They say it’s going to get better, but it won’t. You could spend five years trying to make windows run ob an M1 und MS would break it within an hour.
I’m done with microsoft, they disappointed me to many times, never again. It’s necessary for some games but it’s getting better with linux (thanks to valve).

Or maybe better. In the first days of bitcoin nobody cared about a lost key. A few thousand bitcoin on an account nobody has access to? These bitcoin shouldn’t count, but it’s hard to count them. Maybe declare all bitcoins that didn’t move since eight years as lost?

I used Apple Maps Navigation a few minutes ago because I was to lazy to enter the destination in the car navigation system. And so I got really annoyed of Apple since all directions were 200m to late. I really like the feature where the phone remembers the position of the parked car.
It would be nice if I could send the destination from phone to car in a simple way (no route, just the destination), but this might only work with really new cars.

You should take a look at SailfishOS. I switched from Android to Sailfish OS 8 years or so ago. The original Jolla Phone was really nice and the OS too. Later I switched to an Sony Xperia X with Sailfish OS, but it goes only downhill from there. I think the problem are the devices, the software might be okay. Now I'm with an IPhone and I'm still not happy, it's just something that is not horrible.
Re:Ask HN: Has anyone else gotten the 'Turning Red' ad after Firefox u...
on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:09PM (#30666695)
Precisely. Firefox is the only real opponent to Chrome (and Google is evil) and have just a few percent market share. So whats the matter, Mozilla needs money to develop Firefox and as long nobody wants to pay for, it has to be an ad from time to time. Also I don't think this ad is intrusive or anything. I would't like it if they sell my browsing history without my consent to make money, this would be newsworthy.
By the way, is it possible that Linux users are treated different? Since I didn't notice this "ad" at all, and as example DRM is under Linux disabled by default, the kb-article is a different one for Windows and Linux: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm#firefox:linu...

I've been using BackInTime (https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Back_In_Time/) since 6 years and happy with it.
- it's using rsync and hardlinks, the files on the backupdrive are just normal files
- it got "smart delete" of old backups (e.g. keep 1 backup per year older 1 year, 1 per month older 1 month and 1 per week older 1 week)
- starts an backup automatic in background if you attach the external drive (with udev, if you want it)
- has a nice simple ui (i like it)

Not just now ..., our entire economy is based on shoving perfectly fine hardware into the trash. Microsoft is just a small part in this game. Also everyone talks about "eco friendly" and at the same time things like that happen: "you want the new operating system - buy complete new hardware - its just slightly better then the old one".

We already store a lot of data at home. And ssd and hdd storage has sometimes read errors. With terabytes of data we come across a handful error s per year, most of them will nobody notice.
I use btrfs everywhere I can and see sometimes errors, most times on heavy written files like databases(sqlite files) or virtual harddisks, sometimes even pictures or logfiles.
Even without RAID you could restore the file from a backup (If you try to backup a broken file, the computer won’t let you).

This. Using the app should be dead simple - with a default server, a default username, maybe even a pre set password (bound to the phone number or whatever, I'm not a fan of this but they all do it this way) and a feature adding contacts via link, qrcode, or phone-number. And then there should be a button for expert-mode giving you the complicated setup you want - choosing your own server, name, password and whatever.
Re:Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
on Wednesday February 10, 2021 @10:47AM (#26090712)
I like the fun-facts on this page: "The amount of electricity consumed every year by always-on but inactive home devices in the USA alone could power the Bitcoin network for 1.8 years"
Where is the discussion about the smart home devices using that much energy? This is horrible, thats twice as the Bitcoin network and this is just the USA.
I would really like if someone estimate the energy usage (with all trucks and cars and people and companies and buildings and so on) of other things than just whole countries, maybe the "normal" financial system, or plastic bottles or something everyone is using (like idle smart devices).
I think most people missing the main point: Energy is to cheap. Most miners are in China, an they seem to pay nearly nothing for the energy (else they would'nt do it). This would mean they waste Energy on EVERYTHING, not only Bitcoin mining. In Germany I would never even think about mining Bitcoin, since I have to pay 0,35€ per kWh. But if I would buy thousends of miners and waste 5MW of energy, I would have to pay roughtly 0,15€ (maybe even just 0,05€). So wasting energy is profitable, is'nt this strange?

The only thing is, with Bitcoin we have the numbers. The classic banking system look like a few thousend banks with thousends of buildings with hundreds of thousend computers and million of emloyees. The employees again need to eat, sleep, drive around. They have money that needs to be designed, to be printed, to be distributed. All this cost ressources too, but this really hard to put in numbers.
Re:Bitcoin paper wallet generator bitcoinwalletpaper.com leaks private...
on Friday December 18, 2020 @06:51PM (#25473556)
Browser-based paperwallet generators are not necessarily a bad thing. App-based is not necessarily a good thing (apps can leak data too).
Best approach would be: disconnect LAN -> boot you computer from a live-CD -> don't connect the computer to the internet -> get the browser or app based generator via usb-stick -> generate the paper wallet and print it -> shut down the computer, don't save anything.
Here you go, not even this is safe if the app generate predictable addresses (this already happend by accident).
Maybe put 0,0001btc on the wallet and wait a few weeks and look if they vanish?
I think at some point you have to read and inform yourself. Maybe you find someone you can trust.
A 15 second internet search and a quick printout of a paperwallet is not the best way to deal with your money.
