Also The Animatrix soundtrack was fire to my middle school ears. That specific robit revolution one definitely opened me up to anime-style stuff for the first time. There was also a book called "zen and the matrix" or something similar that had a bunch of essays which blew my 12 year old mind. I dropped out of my catholic confirmation course due to it! Forgot how much that influenced me.
Re:Thousands of Hip Hop Mix Tapes, Why Not on Wednesday May 18, 2016 @11:23AM (#11722587)
Same with Spotify, although I have heard from a publicist yesterday that Spotify plans to announce at IMS next week that they will begin supporting mixes/mixtapes very soon, but I am betting they will require "papered" mixes (as in all songs and samples cleared by ip owners, which is very rare in the mixtape world and could be argued is against the entire philosophy of the free mixtape...). Mixcloud and podcast services seem to be the main venue for mixtapes in the dance scene. Anyone know of any alternatives for hosting mixes for streaming?
Re:Sample workflow for LP digitization on Sunday April 10, 2016 @03:38PM (#11467779)
As a club DJ who selects and plays in a digital format now, I like to leave clicks and pops in when digitizing my "white-labels" or vinyl-exclusive releases (some of the best or most coveted tunes are released on vinyl first in very small runs, months before they are available as downloads). I like to normalize then run the recording through Izotope's Ozone 7 on the "warm and transparent" preset to get it closer in loudness to digital releases I am mixing them with. There is a small community of us who share rips of this type of release from around the world, online, as the best place to pick a lot of this kind of record up is in smaller local genre-specific shops. Black Market soho in London was a Mecca of mine or Rooted Records in Bristol but I live in Cali now and have a hard time keeping up my share ratio but still get a rush when I get a great vinyl rip of a tune earlier than most. It is silly and matters very little to my livelihood but an old tradition in dj'ing that I am glad still survives (having tracks the next Dj doesn't, that is).
Also, if you are using OS X, there's a spectral processing program called SoundHack that let's you convolve (along with several other processes) any two sound files. I am not sure where to grab the latest version, I believe development has been abandoned but it was a stand-alone freeware that one of my '" Intro to DSP" courses used to introduce certain functions.
Re:Neal Stephenson: Why I Am a Sociomediapath (2015) on Wednesday January 06, 2016 @11:05AM (#10851210)
I can smell that fear enough to frustrate my appetite for self-satisfaction and I am 28. Your mention of self-imposed limits makes me think more clearly about where that anxiety comes from and remember the roller coaster click-clack excitement of my pre-illness-self. I work so much harder for other people than myself, and trick myself into thinking it is all for my own benefit. I wish I did not care what other people think.
Would love to read more about SV Culture.
Re:1000 Years of Reverbs on Wednesday November 11, 2015 @10:52AM (#10547234)
Loved the slides. Convolution reverb still my favorite, even if half my ir's are from those old reverb units/plates/springs/chambers, fun to mess with the parameters possible with convolving. I cannot recommend max4live's Convolution Reverb Pro more, changed my life. Tons of cool IR's around for free too. Valhalla is great too!
I live in Beachwood Canyon and I honestly don't mind the visitors, I think we forget we are a NYC stroll away from the hollywood strip and this is all part of being in a major city. The setting (quiet, tall trees and lush gardens and winding hilly roads and the absence of cell service) makes it easy to forget but we are still in the city and not some gated suburb.
Just be kind and don't stand in the middle of beachwood ave blocking traffic grinning down the shaft of your selfie stick (you will see what I mean). I take friends up there all the time (to the trail under the sign) just be quiet and courteous and no one gets upset.
