I often think about how far the Republican party has fallen from Truman with his "The Buck Stops Here" plaque on his desk to Trump's "I don't take any responsibility at all" response to poor Covid testing in 2020.
Re:One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @12:00PM (#49347726)
He'll be investigated by other thin blue line cops who also nap in their squad cars and be found innocent of any wrong doing.
I remember picking up something at the grocery store that featured a large "No High Fructose Corn Syrup" claim on the front. The ingredients on the back listed "corn syrup" which fulfilled the letter of the claim, but not the spirit I would say.
Re:The Joy of Folding Bikes on Sunday April 26, 2026 @01:23AM (#47907605)
I've had a regular Tikit (there's a single knob to lock the steer tube in place, adds 10 seconds to the fold/unfold time) for over 15 years. Picked Bike Friday because I wanted a foldable to be able to take it onto public transit, and the Bromptons were pricier than I wanted. I did have a frame failure early on (repaired thanks to that lifetime warranty), but it's been reliable ever since. If your hyperfold cable does break, I hope at the least you'll be able to retrofit the regular locking knob onto it.

Are there any notable instances of murder for copyright reasons?

The current law is still extends the copyright of a work until a time after the author's death. So if one wished to hasten the expiration of those rights, the motivation still exists; although perhaps diminished by a 70 year wait.

Re:Scott Adams has died on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @12:23PM (#46604247)
His (in)famous sockpuppetry on Metafilter happened back in 2011, so he was a bit off well before his divorce or stepson's death.

The changes for the watch were also very uninspiring this year.
Electric bills aren't calculated by the Watt, you pay per kWh. The expected cost of running the fridge is the salient information.
I first heard the phrase used by parent in a video [1] by youtube channel Not Just Bikes, which found EVs to be similar to ICE cars at typical speeds.

Re:September 17, 1787: "A Republic, If You Can Keep It" on Saturday February 22, 2025 @06:14PM (#43144290)
I would think that majority-minority districts would arise more naturally with smaller districts. Currently the average district covers over three quarters of a million people, more than the population of Seattle. Something like fifty thousand people per district would give the neighborhood of Harlem in NYC four representatives.
You almost have to admire his dedication to just posting through his problems.

This is up there with the Canadian maple syrup theft in the "Crimes most befitting their country" list.

By 1984 AT&T had been listed on the NYSE for over 80 years.
The new locks do have water saving basins, which reduce the water waste by about 60%.
Isn't rail shipping far more expensive than, er, ships? Also, good luck getting anything from China to Europe via rail without going through either Iran (the Middle East) or Russia (not exactly on friendly terms with Europe at the moment, to put it lightly).
If they do something illegal and don't get caught they win. If they get caught, but the fine is less than they made breaking the law, they win. If they have to pay back the same amount of money, but can pay it years later, they win. If the only punishment for bank robbery were paying the bank back if you got caught, we'd probably see a lot more bank robberies.
Re:An antiquated law rules mining in the West on Saturday October 21, 2023 @11:26PM (#37972564)
I don't think the public gets nothing, we'll also get to fund cleanup and remediation once the mines are no longer profitable.

Fun recursive food fact: the filling between the wafers of a kit-kat bar is ground up kit-kat bars.
Since smallpox was eradicated over 40 years ago and most people alive today have not been vaccinated against it, I doubt it would matter much.
There are some reflector lenses available for SLR cameras, not everyone likes their different optical properties though.
>Illinois of all places, where the crime is out of control

Is it? From what I've found Illinois is fairly middle of the pack vs other states.

Re:Apple's Reality Pro headset compromised on Thursday May 18, 2023 @08:33PM (#35996319)
In retrospect, every invention is obvious. I think it's fair to say that Apple went a bit beyond just slapping bluetooth onto their existing headphones. The instant pairing experience alone makes them stand out against the standard competition.
Interestingly it looks like the engineering firm that later identified the issue with the walkway is the engineering firm that designed the Millennium tower fix.

That's not even within the Antarctic circle, I don't think I'd consider it a "South Pole" outpost.
I'm curious to see what secondary effects this trend of legislative requirements brings about. Once USB-C becomes the de jure standard, what happens when a better option appears? Will it require multiple countries to simultaneously agree to shift to a new standard. Or will nothing new come about because USB-C is seen as good enough and too entrenched?
