Re:Dune: Part Two Is the Best Sci-Fi Film of the Decade on Thursday February 29, 2024 @02:09PM (#39553642)
It suffers partially from contrived exposition. It seems whenever a Dune film is made, the filmmakers tend to try to include as much of the lore as tolerably possible. They could've just started off the first film with Paul entering a room to encounter Gaius Helen Mohiam and the audience being introduced to the box.
Bioavailability of protein from vegetables is significantly less than from animals.
The broken satiety mechanism is a result of hormone imbalance caused by a poor nutritional diet. Highly processed foods, an overabundance of sugar, artificial sweeteners, salt, and refined vegetable/seed oils, a carb-heavy diet, deficiency of essential micronutrients, and so on causes deleterious effects on the human body.

People need to eat less junk and eat more natural whole foods.

Not OP but there were some decent ones in the comparison box w/ the slider (such as Source Code Pro). Deja Vu Sans Mono is another good one.

F-Droid apps do not require Google Play services (that's part of its raison d'être) and will work fine on Graphene OS. Aurora Store, on the other hand, depends on the app in question. If it's a paid app that requires Google Pay, then it won't be compatible.

I wouldn't say 12/12 counts as intermittent fasting, but it sounds like it's been working for you so keep on.
Just set the forwarding address as the recovery email.

Reminds me of how Carl Sagan wrote about his experiences with cannabis usage (under the pseudonym Mr. X, as to avoid the social stigma associated with it at the time).
Re:Signal is for everyone, and everyone is different on Tuesday March 07, 2023 @03:57PM (#35061095)
> (Edit: you also require that users have Google Play or the App Store.)

This is incorrect. You don't need Google Play to use Signal on Android. You can download the APK from https://signal.org/android/apk/

Then verify with SHA256 and you're golden.

> In terms of privacy, Android is "compromised" by default, i.e. Google collects and stores a ton of private information about you.

Apple also does the same. Also, this only applies if you're running an Android device "out-of-the-box". Fortunately, there exist AOSP forks that mitigate this type of intrusion (e.g. GrapheneOS).

Sounds like a miracle. Good for you

Would you be able to provide a reliable source for your statements? I've heard certain segments of the population make claims about "starvation mode" but none that have been substantiated with any scientific evidence or conclusive studies.

I also scanned through the comments looking for this poster you say who talked about eating without activating certain biochemical switches, but was unable to find it. Where is this purported comment?

Re:Impact of breakfast skipping compared with dinner skipping on Saturday January 14, 2023 @02:40PM (#34383386)
It's not that complicated. Eating more leads to greater body mass, which requires higher caloric intake to sustain. Eating less leads to the opposite.

If you gain 20 pounds, then you need to eat more relative to your previous weight in order to maintain your current weight (including that extra 20 pounds). If you lose 20 pounds, you have to eat less to maintain that new weight.

Re:Impact of breakfast skipping compared with dinner skipping on Saturday January 14, 2023 @02:35PM (#34383327)
Based on my own personal experience (and, to a lesser degree, some other sources I've read online), intermittent fasting (IF) leads to the opposite of obesity.

With a smaller eating window (e.g. less than or equal to 8 hours in a day), there is a greater likelihood that less food will be consumed. This relies on CICO (ie. calorie consumption being less than TDEE). I read the linked abstract but there was no mention of number of calories consumed by the test subjects; I estimate that this would be the most critical factor with regard to weight loss.

As far as the claimed likelihood for type 2 diabetes, it seems to run counter to everything I've read about IF. When a person restricts their eating to a smaller window of time, their body's insulin resistance decreases, thereby lowering the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

Re:Moonwalkers: The World's Fastest Shoes on Friday January 06, 2023 @02:02AM (#34271805)
Many of the critical comments here seem to focus only on the high price for these devices, but what about the clunkiness factor?

- These "shoes" weigh in at 4.2 lbs each, which IMO makes it prohibitively tedious to deal with. In comparison, a typical cushioned running shoe weighs in at around 11 ounces.

- The extra height off the ground results in a loss of stability and, consequently, a loss in dexterity.

- It seems to function best when moving in a straight line, but impractical otherwise (like turning a corner).

Perhaps there will be improvements to address these issues in later iterations, but if the novelty isn't that big a deal, you may as well just get a pair of rollerskates.

The infamous Golden State Killer was found using a genealogy database as well. Veritasium made a YT video about it.
Re:My YouTube Earnings on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @12:31AM (#34228061)
A YouTuber who goes by the handle kofuzi just released a video that goes into the fine details and analysis of his channel's metrics with full transparency. He's easily among the top 3 video content makers who focus on running, running shoes, and running events. Despite putting out high-quality videos, his channel isn't nearly as popular as OP (probably due to his focus being more niche).

Counterpoints and counter-counterpoints mentioning all these "studies" and yet not a single concrete example is given. It's a shame when online discussion and debate devolves into "here's my point just take my word for it".
Re:Internet Archive Scholar on Friday December 09, 2022 @04:00PM (#33926414)
Anyone who uses amazon.com can set the Internet Archive as their preferred charity and shop using smile.amazon.com. A percentage of your purchases amount will go to the IA.
The Simple Mobile Tools suite alone covers most of the useful day-to-day utility needs.
Nitter still works but Bibliogram is gone. For medium.com posts, there is scribe.rip.
You can use `scribe.rip` instead of `medium.com`. The former is just an anonymous frontend for the latter. All the info you need at https://scribe.rip/

For audio there's also OGG Vorbis, which is open-source and royalty-free and superior to MP3 at comparable bitrates.

EDIT: looks like opus is actually the successor to Vorbis.

Thanks for this. I hadn't considered googletagmanager.com but that appears to be the likely culprit as it is the common denominator between these sites.
Plenty of comments here talking about using uBlock [Origin], piHole, disabling JS, and so on, but it doesn't look like anybody has bothered to ask specifically how TikTok is actually doing the tracking. And TFA doesn't explain the method(s) in any technical detail.

I visited several of the sites mentioned in TFA, and uBlock didn't show any connection requests being made to any tiktok-related URLs. Nor were there any unfamiliar websites commonly shared amongst these sites in case TikTok was using a proxy service to hide behind.

A person who shops on amazon can shop using smile.amazon.com and have a percentage of their purchase payments go towards charities or other organizations. The Internet Archive is one of them.
