Re:Most people don't care about quality on Thursday January 02, 2025 @11:30AM (#42575883)
Didn't you just prove their point / agree with your post? The German car pricing example fits right in the "people can't judge quality adequately and marketing does the rest" narrative:

People buy overpriced cars that are not actually high quality.

or

You/marketing are telling me about how these chinese cars are higher quality and I should by them. While most people have no Idea whether "green engines" are good or bad. I could take your word for it and believe that they are inefficient. But that sounds bogus given that efficiency is a cornerstone of "green".

There are a lot of ways the illusion of more detail than there actually is is given. Simulation cost saving measures so to say.

E.g.: Detail in memory fades quite quickly. Vision is not as detailed as we think.

Having a "walkeable" weight is also good for you.
I was more concerned about the vens

I'd like to see this backed by data. I believe the anonymity of the platform helps remove a lot of the stress, bullying etc. that make instagram so toxic for teens. There is shit content on both platforms. But no one at school associates your social standing with your reddit account karma.

It is as well in most of europe. And its also illegal to make your employees take a drug test in most of europe unless you work for the police or with heavy machinery

So are they reading their minds? Is that possible/ What does it look like?

Most if not all your points are moot if optional WfH is implemented. Which is what all the proponents of WfH want. I don't think anyone want's to force people to work from home. Just give us the options.

I'm living with my son and girlfriend with a roommate. It's doable if you are open minded, know open minded people and don't care too much what society thinks a family should look like. An honestly, it's great to have a buddy right at home in these social isolation times.
Organic food actually doesn't have significantly less pesticides in them. Here is a good video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PmM6SUn7Es

You are quoting an outdated study. New research [1] has shown that happiness does in fact not plateau at 70k, unfortunately

Sure, but it's also the job of the government to oversee the power corporations have and how they wield it. No single corporation should be allowed to actively shape and censor information just because they are successful / a monopoly.
Re:New LinkedIn Data Leak Leaves 700M Users Exposed on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @08:36AM (#27674941)
I feel like the lines between a data leak and large scale scraping are getting blurred. At least in their impact for the user. Which is a bad thing as it will support the "so what" attitude that many people have toward their data.

It is a fact that all this data is already being crawled by bot nets.

If all data is leaked at once, this is similar to a large scale successful crawling of the site. At least from a user perspective.

So I get what you are saying. It sounds more dramatic than it actually is. It is still a massive leak. But from a pool that scummy businesses have been thoroughly scooping from already anyway.

Re:Drug users use a lot of drugs on Wednesday June 09, 2021 @06:10PM (#27453943)
There always are, for any drug.

There is the person that uses amphetamines to get high SAT scores, high college grades and stops after landing a FAANG job.

There is the person using alcohol as "social lube". Never drinks alone, never gets wasted.

There is the person using LSD and other party drugs few times per year or less in a controlled setting

And then there are the extremely addicted people. And everything in between. It's a sliding scale. People need to be educated to learn the risks and recognize harmful behavioral patterns.

Simply telling people "drugs are bad for you" might be the abridged version of the truth. But is as effective as the "war on drugs" in reducing drug abuse.

Re:How to find a job as Software Developer in Germany on Thursday April 22, 2021 @09:55AM (#26902751)
I just got a 6 figure non-senior position in Berlin. Sent out close to 100 applications and went into interview processes at around 30 places. 80-90k is definitely doable if you are good and take your time (I was looking for 3-4 months).

You need to filter beforehand for salary. Most places expect to pay around 60-70k max. But getting the higher salary is more a matter of finding the company willing to pay it than just "being good".

As one CTO said during salary negotiations: "There are a lot of 100k devs working 60k jobs"
