Re:Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 800Gb/s and Beyond [pdf]

This just isn't true though. I worked at a relatively minor video streaming company and we overloaded and took down AWS CloudFront for an entire region. They refused to work with us or increase capacity because the datacenter (one of the ones in APac) was already full. This was on top of already spreading the load across 3 regions. We only had a few million viewers.
We ended up switching to Fastly for CDN. There's something hidden here though that becomes a problem at Netflix size. We were willing to pay the cloud provider tax, and we didn't dig down into kernel level or storage optimizations because off the shelf was good enough. At Netflixes scale, that adds up to millions of extra server hours you have to pay for if you don't do the 5% optimizations outlined in the article.

My friend is an EE that I went to school with. He's very bright and definitely sharper and harder working than me.
I went to school for Chemistry and switched to DevOps - which are the not the highest paid of SEs.
I make 1.5x what he does. I help run a package tracking dashboard. He ensures power systems for millions of people work flawlessly in all conditions. He's looking to quit the industry because its so hopeless.
Re:Ask HN: How do you remind yourself of your goals?

I've tried a lot of productivity tricks and the one I find most effective is to create a mantra. First off I have a todo list and every morning and night it tells me to say my mantra. Secondly I focus on only one thing or habit at a time - everything else which may be important still needs to wait its turn. I then just say whatever my goal is 10 times twice a day and after a week it starts to become difficult to stray from my goal. It usually takes a month or two and then I can start working on my next goal while remembering to maintain my previous ones. Make sure your goals are as concrete as possible - someone else should be able to read them without much context and understand exactly what to do.

This is what we do. Each product has it's own prod and qa account.

I use my desk only for work - no eating or lounging on the internet - that's what my mobile device is for. I then have a playlist of ambient music. This also cues my brain that I'm in work mode.

You could blow in one direction or the other, at an angle. The air you push away will push you the other way.
