Re:Message DB: Event Store and Message Store for PostgreSQL on Tuesday December 17, 2019 @12:31AM (#21810936)
Publishing and subscribing are through SQL SELECT statements which can be called straight forward enough from most or all languages. Administering it does indeed require shell or ruby. Better still in my opinion if possible, implement your business logic in PL/pgSQL procs with these SELECTs within them and call them from whatever client/frontend you are using. I know it's not cool right now but there's big advantages and a disadvantage to putting business logic in the DB is said to be vendor lock but when it comes to Postgres, lock me up and throw away the key.
Re:Protect the last of the wild on Thursday November 01, 2018 @06:33PM (#18359065)
I think the ecological issues we're facing are more serious and underappreciated that the overall warming problem. They are linked but ultimately we can survive longer as it gets warmer, just more alone. If you do a search for ecological the result presumes you mean environmental a lot. Pollution, plastics and habitats need very urgent attention as well has CO2/Methane.

It is also one of the big results people are freaking out about the changing climates but stay away from mentioning it much as many don't see it affecting us directly. Technology may drive us enough to replace the untouched wildness essential for nature. I've heard the only large area becoming wilder is Chernobyl and it's hard to think about what's next for Brazil and pretty much everywhere.

We have to consider what's left to be land of the highest value and compensate people (less the 0.1%) who are affected by that decision.

Gogs renders well behaved org files also. The VS Code extension should get the update to allow folding soon. After that the Ctrl-c Ctrl-v crowd could use it nicely with Orgzly and Syncthing say bypassing Emacs until they need a full development environment. You could use Pandoc importing/exporting to other formats without Emacs. For note taking it's promising. Sharing to Orgzly on mobile captures a lot.
Uganda would be considered within the Anglosphere but not "core Anglosphere". It may not of been the most common use of the word before but Breixteers are trying to convince people that these countries will replace the trade they are stopping with the rest of Europe so will take as many as they can. I not sure if follow but you mention that the general public is happy and that is surely the issue. If the populous were made aware of the implications of what they agree to on most of these sites/messaging services, owned and controlled by "elites", there would be action. It's difficult to explain to people so that they are convinced. The general assumption is that if it is as bad as is being reported it would not of been allowed in the first place.
I don't think that it is for situations were you have a database and are deciding to get rid of it but it could be useful if you starting something but for whatever reason a DB isn't possible and you might be new to Javascript. A version of the panadas Comparison with SQL doc for pure Javascript? Also pretty simple association of map-reduce to SQL I haven't seen before in Hadoop explanations.
Re:Neovim 0.3 released on Monday June 11, 2018 @05:32PM (#17288791)
NeoVim is not quiet Vim which isn't vi either and all are terminal editors first so GUIs may never be as good for them. When I started with Emacs I thought I might use it in the terminal after Vim vs GVim but it's GUI is worth it.

I wasn't long enough using Vim to depend on C-h but if you've the time for all the config it's great to have the options. That reminds me I must still make so changes to Vim Vixen to be more like Vimperator was. It's great having the basic vim commands in Emacs as well, maybe not in org-agenda.

Evil or Spacemacs in Emacs? 26.1 with pixel-level scrolling out now!

He's keeping it real, going with Apache Allura.
Around our parts 7up is consider medicinal if you've the flu as it's the right balance of sugar and salt in it. Hot toddy to prevent a cold. I'm not sure of any studies.
On a browser in portrait view it cuts off the end of the line and you have to scroll to the end and start of next line each time. Landscape view is fine.

Relatively young? You're very young. If you're not married or tied up with a mortgage yet I would travel for a few months to a year while it's still ok to use hostels. You can always apply for positions from abroad, develop some proactive skill like using orgmode or meditation and you get the kind of experiences that would put a permanent smile on your face whatever job you come back to. It's also a good excuse for being out of a job.
If you pay the most tax you have implicitly paid the required amount of tax is not a good argument.

You can could response to those comments so they can be discussed or just declare them fake news if that's how you feel.

Nothing in that link addresses the EU ruling or this deal.

I think the EU ruled that Apple's deal violated Irish law, not EU law. The 0.005% effective tax rate should of been a fair bit closer to Ireland’s 12.5% corporate tax rate.
It's interesting to see how they approach these issues. Like how this article is about a gap in salaried income which is something we're expected to know all about already. There is the wealth gap, which is different. I thought that the differences in peoples salaries are but a mere speck of that issue as most of the top end wealth comes from dividends and inheritance. That would not be an educational issue.
Re:Ancient Viruses Buried in DNA on Friday October 06, 2017 @03:40PM (#15419778)
I'm not sure if junk DNA was covered directly in the book. It may of been a radio interview about the book where I heard junk DNA discussed. From what I remember a large portion of say our DNA was not understood so was considered junk but old viruses assimilated into our DNA could make up as much as 40% of us. The assimilated DNA could then act like a defence so removing it would be bad.
Re:Ancient Viruses Buried in DNA on Friday October 06, 2017 @03:16PM (#15419575)
And yet it doesn't shy away from the details. One of the main things I took away was how symbiosis could be the driving force behind evolution instead of purely the traditional competitive based changes.
Re:Ancient Viruses Buried in DNA on Friday October 06, 2017 @02:55PM (#15419391)
First heard of this from Frank Ryans book Virolution. It explains a lot of what had been termed junk DNA previously.
Re:Ask HN: Which laptop for development? on Tuesday October 03, 2017 @05:17PM (#15396288)
T420 would be ok if you can check that it should run docker. That would allow you to use or test many stacks without installs and deploy them to a bigger machine if needed. For a cheap option I recommend the Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series with Ubuntu preinstalled instead of Windows. It is a Celeron processor and the 14.04 version of Ubuntu but it runs docker great. Also Ubuntu really looks better at the lower resolution which it most of been originally designed for. I got one new for €200.

But it's likely true that it wasn't all their doing if they do exist. They could handy fall guys for whomever did the real work.
Re:Google, Facebook may have to reveal deepest secrets on Sunday October 01, 2017 @08:40PM (#15380834)
I think you're right just wanted to highlight that some seriously impressive tech was applied. Any suggestion that it was a exclusively Russia/Ukrainian team that did everything could be a distraction so that the whole issue can be lumped into the popular dialogue. I'm sure there was a Russian or two on the real team.

I also like to direct people to the following https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/may/07/the-great... Also "no way a rag-tag team beats.." is straight from the plot of the movie Moneyball which is what we're talking about here. Also no-one is talking about GDPR which could stop this (please see below).
Re:Google, Facebook may have to reveal deepest secrets on Sunday October 01, 2017 @07:26PM (#15380512)
Does anyone know how FB is planning to adhere to GDPR coming into force next year? Google are said to have stopped analysing peoples gmail. Could it be as simple as reducing the variables collected/predicted to a unashamed set that can be shown to users about themselves and could FB afford that?
Re:Ask HN: What do you listen to when you code? on Tuesday July 11, 2017 @09:17PM (#14749434)
It used to have more but there is still a lot of choice. http://mikesradioworld.com/ Cycle through BBC and Irish stations. Saving regular ones in Rhythmbox or VLC on my phone.
I think of inner & outer joins like AND & OR. An inner join will only return a result if the value of key that the join is on exists in both tables. An outer join will give rows for all key values in both tables even if values are only in one or the other table with null results in the row for the columns of the opposite table. Inner joins are the default as you are generally interested in what matches between tables but you have the option of outer if you need to get the full messy picture or if you are doing ETL and want to ensure no badish records are missing.
Re:Switching to Ubuntu on Saturday November 19, 2016 @08:39AM (#12993427)
I think it was significantly improved around 14.04 and remember a definite before vs after difference. Further tweaks in 16.04 but you would hardly notice anymore.
