Your main beef is that Alan was "either naive or not truthful" or that things changed over the course of 7 years?
Re:Designing a Mobile App for Maximum Growth on Thursday October 29, 2015 @12:49AM (#10469333)
I love this article and it is a pretty great handbook on a variety of tactics you normally don't get much depth about. But I wish the whole thing was prefaced with, this mostly matters after you've found an audience. (Or product/market fit if you're pmarca)
Re:Why Group Therapy Worked on Thursday August 13, 2015 @02:57PM (#10056414)
"Why did group therapy work when individual didn’t? Part of it was that having nine different mirrors reflect back my problematic behavior brought into brilliant and incontrovertible light what I had been able to avoid confronting"

Sometimes we aren't aware of how badly we want and choose ignorance and avoidance

Re:Who's doing this to my internet? on Tuesday July 28, 2015 @10:40AM (#9961793)
You know how in the innovator's dilemma, the point at which the new innovator gets a foothold is also the point where the old firm has peak profits? I think there's a similar thing where the best time to user a particular service is when the service is least profitable.

That's what the 2012 nostalgia sounds like to me. Back when Twitter was hosting revolutions, but still having issues with uptime (not to mention revenue). And Project Loon was alive, but mostly getting mocked by both Wall Street and charities/nonprofits (With Bill Gates being the most visible).

I also suspect 2012-2014 was when SoundCloud had huge amounts of traffic and, without any way of making money, at its least profitable. I have no actual evidence of this.

Personally, Project Loon always sounded like some crazy way of getting more people to use Google than actual charity. Like some weird extrapolation from, "the more people that use the Internet, the more money Google makes" and "Google's reached market saturation in current markets, we need growth in developing countries"

Going off memory for all this. Sorry if I get some details wrong about Innovators Dilemma, Twitter in 2012, Project Loon and such.

What? I had no clue this was comming. I'm surprised there wasn't more signs
Re:A maths question for Singapore schoolkids on Monday April 13, 2015 @02:06PM (#9369282)
More of a logic question, though at its core math is logic and pattern recognition.

I'm certainly going to need a lot more practice if I want to place in Singapore's top 40% of 14/15 year olds

Re:How Pixar Solves Problems from the Inside Out on Sunday April 12, 2015 @09:37PM (#9365513)
I don't think it ever was a chocolate factory of awesome. It's just been around long enough (and had enough people work there) that we hear about it more
According to one recent grad. Why is this even an article?
Re:Messenger.com on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @06:23PM (#9344508)
This will be interesting to see how many people use a stand-alone web client for messaging rather than just facebook.com I wonder if they'll also tear this out from the core facebook website
Re:What Happens When Apple Buys a Company You Depend On on Friday March 27, 2015 @01:18AM (#9274868)
Angry much?

You lost me with the "code isn't a good that spoils" line. It is a great phrase, but perhaps you could re-explain?

Hey look, it's something Sam Altman suggested, but happening in real life
Oh thank goodness. We should be celebrating the end of NPAPI
Re:Any good open-source self-hosted evernote alternatives? on Sunday March 15, 2015 @11:31AM (#9206810)
What cloud storage provider do you prefer or are you rolling your own infrastructure?
Re:Venture capital has a self-dealing problem on Thursday March 12, 2015 @06:53PM (#9194531)
Hrm, didn't think this particular "Twitter fight" would end up as an article. I see Kevin's point, but maybe I've been in the water too long. It doesn't bother me much. There's plenty of networking and such already. Serial entrepreneurs have nearly as many connections as any VC would anyways. And the VC partner that is "self-dealing" isn't going to be able to deal himself single-handedly. There are other partners at the firm.

There's lots of other unfair things in the Valley when it comes to privilege like this.

Re:Welcome Peter on Tuesday March 10, 2015 @06:13PM (#9181055)
And so the YC behemoth grows. Congrats, I look forward to being lectured many times about needing secrets and monopolies.

And focusing not on being the first product to market, but the last.

Did I miss any Thiel-isms?

Re:The joyless world of data-driven startups on Tuesday March 10, 2015 @06:11PM (#9181034)
Oh thank goodness it isn't just me.

Not with that title we aren't
Re:The Back Story of Meerkat: A Side Project That Took Off on Monday March 09, 2015 @06:51PM (#9174626)
Meerkat has gotten ridiculously popular. I think it and Magic are in some competition for 2015's "Accidental Startup that came out of nowhere"

Very interesting seeing feeds from today's Apple Watch event. I can't help but think Meerkat is what uStream mobile should have been all along

This makes gets unreasonably excited. Love that it is open-sourced

Re:McDonald’s Seeks Its Fast-Food Soul on Sunday March 08, 2015 @08:07PM (#9167987)
They've been long overdue for an overhaul.

Remember when Ford kept saying, "Quality is Job #1" yet nothing they did seem to reflect that? It seems to be just like that.

Yeah it sucks that they became and still are the fast food scapegoat, but it really should have been a wake-up call for them

Re:My Y Combinator experience on Thursday March 05, 2015 @11:56AM (#9151948)
I think it is interesting to see it from their point of view, especially their expectations, assumptions and details they remembered.
Re:Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free on Monday March 02, 2015 @06:18PM (#9135055)
Yeah, but I think $3,000 is a small enough increment for them. You'd need to do this dozens of times for it to be a meaningful aggregate amount. And that situation should be fairly obvious and easy to police.
Re:Marissa Mayer Has Completed Step One on Monday March 02, 2015 @12:34PM (#9133098)
I like that phrasing in the title. She's done a lot, but there's clearly a lot more to do. This is a well written piece of long-form.

I do often forget about small things like the Weather app, which is absolutely delightful. I hope they apply that level of polish to their other apps. Personally I think they should skip small apps such as Weather and just dive right meatier categories such as Mail

The Daily Show. I have no idea what I'm going to do when Jon Stewart retires.
Re:Remember when, on the internet, no one knew who you were? on Saturday February 28, 2015 @11:06PM (#9126001)
Still no one knows who I am... except dang it I chose poorly in the username department for this
Re:Typography in ten minutes on Saturday February 28, 2015 @11:00AM (#9124000)
<3 Rather useful, and glad even lawyers (at least one) geek out over this
I don't know if I could be that selfless and humble and just happy for the greater good. I hope I would be, but can't say for certain.
Re:SwiftMonthly – Newsletter for Swift Developers on Thursday February 26, 2015 @03:02PM (#9115065)
To be fair, it is TOP middle of the screen... Totally normal there
This sounds about the right level of crazy for Zuck, but he's got a pretty good track record for crazy.

This would be more crazy and less meaningful if there was worthwhile city planning happening on the peninsula, but check out traffic patterns, population density and public transit. Also look at where the FB campus is. That area needs any help it can get.
