This place is so infested with Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) and Musk Derangement Syndrome (MDS) that it's almost impossible to discuss anything even tangentially related to them on their actual merits. Even if RFK Jr. provides ironclad scientific proof of this link they'll just deny it.

Some of them probably add the Red 40 food coloring that he banned back to their food out of spite to stick it to MAGA and MAHA.

Is he in Big Wellness's pocket? I hadn't heard anything about that. Who's paying him off? He's a Kennedy with a net worth of about $15 million so he doesn't exactly need the money. He strikes me as an authentic true believer in his cause, but he could just be a really convincing con man, so I'd love to learn more about this.

Please link to some credible sources showing that he's being paid off by someone.

Why are doctors telling women that it's okay to take Tylenol during pregnancy in the first place? Everything they put in their bodies can have an effect on the baby so medication for pregnant mothers should be severely limited. Why haven't we learned from the Thalidomide scandal?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalidomide_scandal

Tylenol only helps for minor aches and pains that frankly, pregnant mothers should just deal with for the good of their unborn child. The risk is not worth it.

RFK Jr. isn't right on everything, but he's not wrong on everything either and it's refreshing seeing someone head HHS that isn't in big pharma's pocket for a change.

My unhelpful answer is that I usually begin an unproductive procrastination loop wherein I overanalyze different alternative programming languages, frameworks, libraries, and possible ways to build software. I read a ton of books and tutorials and then never build the thing. Oh and I spend way too much time here and on other websites.

My helpful answer is that occasionally I break out of this procrastination loop and just start making something I think would be cool. It doesn't have to be anything new or exciting, just something that will keep my interest or even better scratch my own itch.

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that you shouldn't reinvent the wheel. This couldn't be further from the truth. Just imagine if people actually followed this advice in the technology space. Almost all of the software that you use on a daily basis is a reinvented wheel.

Re:Marriage, Motherhood, and Women's Well-Being on Friday September 05, 2025 @06:20PM (#45144335)
TLDR:

> Contrary to the common narrative that women who marry and have children are unhappy, the 2025 Women’s Well-Being Survey finds that married mothers are happier than women who are unmarried and women who do not have children. Both marriage and motherhood contribute to well-being in different ways. Married women are more likely than their unmarried counterparts to report feeling deep connection and meaning in their relationships. They are also less likely to be lonely and more likely to receive physical affection—both strong predictors of happiness. Mothers are also more likely to find meaning and purpose in life.

Does operate locally retain any smart features or does it just essentially become a dumb thermostat?
I highly recommend Ecobee if you want an alternative to Google Nest.
Is there a specific reason you’re choosing Delaware?

I know that it used to be the favorite state for this, but there have been recent changes to laws that make it less business friendly than it used to be.

I never said that.

I do think that he had help, possibly from the intelligence community. There are too many oddities to that assassination attempt to ignore.

I agree, he needs to just release everything he can, while protecting the victims of course. The fact he has been resistant to this shows he is trying to hide something. I just don’t think he’s directly implicated.

The people who are expecting some big Trump bombshell in all of this are likely to be disappointed. Releasing a video of Trump being untoward with an underage girl is a much easier way to destroy him than the Butler, PA assassination attempt, or even the Steele dossier/Russian Collusion hoax.

Re:1TB Raspberry Pi SSD on sale now for $70 on Friday September 05, 2025 @11:33AM (#45139755)
This is why I’ve become sour on Raspberry Pi. By the time you obtain all the parts you need to turn it into a usable computer you’re spending more than you would for a used mini desktop PC that is more compatible and often more performant. Unless you really need an ARM processor for some reason, it’s hard to justify it.
I don’t think he’s personally implicated in the Epstein scandal anymore than what’s already public knowledge. You don’t think that something like that would’ve already been used against him?

I think it’s more likely that he’s being blackmailed by the intelligence community or covering up for his friends.

I actually think he’s one of the most honest politicians in modern history. I know that’s a really low bar. For good and bad, he does speak his mind instead of the usual focus group tested politically correct rhetoric that most politicians speak in. I think he’s comfortable with lying to save his own skin, but I don’t think he lies about his political beliefs very often.

How do they import these wood pellets? Is it fossil fuel powered ships? Is that factored in to the CO2 neutrality?
Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution states…

> The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States

That being said, I think it is silly to rename it, but I think a case can be made that he has the Constitutional authority to do so.

> Another example of communism that isn’t some impoverished corrupt nation economically isolated from global trade through US led embargo: on base housing at your local military base.

Military on base housing has been privatized since the 90s. You are provided a housing allowance as part of your pay that is then paid to corporate landlords.

Re:Google deletes net-zero pledge from sustainability website on Thursday September 04, 2025 @07:15PM (#45133309)
So you would like to have the government take over all the houses and become your landlord instead?

When they seize these properties, how should the government determine who gets to live where? Should it be based on your profession? Your family size? Your standing within the Party, Comrade? Perhaps your ability to bribe the government agent who is responsible for assigning housing? What if there’s not enough housing for everyone and the government is behind on building more? How many random strangers are you okay with sharing your apartment with?

Resources are fundamentally finite and unequally distributed, even under communism.

We bought a small office grade HP Color LaserJet MFP a few years ago and it’s been great. Consumer grade HP printers are junk, but their business grade models are still pretty good.
Re:Google deletes net-zero pledge from sustainability website on Thursday September 04, 2025 @03:53PM (#45131539)
I don’t think the World War II economy is repeatable today. It was a time of great patriotism with the majority of the nation supporting the war. People were willing to sacrifice for the cause and accept rationing of goods and making substitutions. They also knew that these sacrifices were temporary and helped their loved ones win the war and hopefully return to them sooner.

Today in America it is hard to get more than half the population to agree on anything. There is no unifying catalyst to bring about the consensus, cooperation, and personal sacrifice that would be necessary to implement a centrally planned economy in the United States today.

Re:Google deletes net-zero pledge from sustainability website on Thursday September 04, 2025 @01:16PM (#45129673)
How do you achieve nation or world scale communism without totalitarianism? I am one of many people who know the history of communism’s failures and will never accept it willingly.
Re:Google deletes net-zero pledge from sustainability website on Thursday September 04, 2025 @01:03PM (#45129464)
I think a large nation the size of the former Soviet Union or China should be enough to invalidate communism and centrally planned economies if that’s what you’re suggesting.

Do you have an example of an alternative economic system that is more efficient at resource allocation in practice, not just theory?

More than any other company, Google needs to succeed in AI. AI chat has already replaced search engines for many people. Nearly all of Google’s revenue comes from advertising.

C style null terminated strings were a mistake. They are almost never the right answer. Even C itself should start transitioning to length prefixed strings instead.
Re:Ask HN: What does a happy life look like to you? on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @08:40PM (#45122077)
I can’t think of anything that has given my life more meaning than being a husband and a father. It gives me so much happiness and purpose.

If you need to be forced to change the default password on Cisco products you probably shouldn’t be using them.
Re:Finding thousands of exposed Ollama instances using Shodan on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @06:51AM (#45114286)
How is it Cisco’s fault that a lot of network administrators are incompetent and don’t change default passwords?
Re:U.S. Military Strikes Drug Vessel from Venezuela, Killing 11 on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @11:02PM (#45111855)
If they’re sending drugs to our streets, they do pose an imminent threat. Anyone who knows someone who has been the victim of drug abuse, overdoses, or gang violence can attest to this.
