Surely the real sweet spot is diversity? Solar for when it's sunny (which is more often than many think in lots of parts of the UK, especially SE England), wind (reliable most of the year in other parts of the UK), tidal/wave/hydro, etc.
Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:48AM (#50244702)
I've been hoping for a water and dust resistant tablet for use in the pottery studio for a while (for photographing work in progress, cataloguing glaze ingredients, taking notes, etc), as it's a wet and dirty environment, but the price kills all interest.

You tip for purchases from a shop in Canada? Or is that a joke that's gone over my head?
Re:OLED iPad Mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:04AM (#50243920)
Costs as much as the full-size one did until recently.
Parties and dates aren't the only ways to socialise. What about sports clubs, art or language classes, board games, a beer or wine tasting club?
> Not only these morons had in mind that electricity demand should decrease (even before AI, it was obvious that demand would go up as we are moving away from fossil fuel with both heating and transportation going electric).

Demand on the national grid probably should; as home solar (yes, even in stereotypically dark and cloudy UK), wind etc becomes more and more viable I think a mix of on-site and grid electricity will be increasingly common.

There's a balance to be had between a highly specialised custom tool that does exactly what you need now, versus a generalist tool that does what you do today and more but is less optimised for your specific use-case today. That, and standing on the shoulders of giants, knowing why those fences are there, and so on.

They're linked in the article.

Don't yuck someone else's yum
That's quite the name
Most races I've participated in or spectated at in the last few years you'd see Hoka on at least half the runners' feet.

What does it actually do? The page just states "it lets your phone work together with your terminal" but what does that actually mean?
Re:Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives on Thursday September 10, 2026 @04:14AM (#49640161)
In most places where train travel is an option, you'll probably be a 10-15 min walk from a station, or a 5 minute cycle, or a short connecting trip on a bus or tram. Multi-modal trips and short walks are normal in a lot of places - I know this isn't the case in America because of how American owned mapping apps like Google Maps go out of their way to hide routes with more than a 5 minute walk involved.

What a strange thing to say

Enforcement, too, including the little things that "don't really matter". Letting people get away with minor infringements like parking where it's forbidden, idling with the engine running, close passes etc means the window of what's acceptable driving behaviour shifts.

We should return to the idea that driving is a privilege, not a right.

Re:What will our economic future look like? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:23AM (#49627135)
> Ultimately, what the economy looks like in 2030 depends on many factors, like what AI can do, and how companies and workers choose to adopt it.

So the answer is basically "beats me lol"

Re:I wanna live an NPC life on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @05:44PM (#49542989)
It’s funny, because one might argue that a lack of awareness of, or empathy for the fact that other people also have thoughts and autonomy also demonstrates a lack of self-conscious critical thought.
I can't imagine this is at top of mind for many voters, or even in mind at all. People are more concerned with things like the cost of living, immigration and things like local planning law.

Markdown is ubiquitous in the kinds of places Hacker News visitors also tend to visit, like GitHub, various ticketing and project management systems like Jira, note takers like Obsidian and Notion (or an approximation of Markdown).

I've used `--` for years in place of an em-dash, which markdown renders as an actual em-dash.

And then there's the cheesecake from La Viña which stands above all others.
Re:Berd on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @04:28AM (#49358680)
I think that's the point, no? The page is light on text but appears to be some kind of weird art project making fun of the inane "helpful and friendly" personas given to LLM chatbots

Just because Billy misbehaved doesn’t make it ok for Jenny to do the same.
Re:Incident with Github.com on Monday August 17, 2026 @10:46AM (#49331930)
I just use GitHub for the basics: repo hosting, reviews and actions - what are the "social media psyop manipulations"? I've never really paid much attention to the other features.
Audio doesn’t seem to work in mobile safari.

Would you mind explaining this? What is NPC-like behaviour?

Even with "reduce motion" enabled the background of this page is constantly animating - it's so distracting I just gave up.
