Gonna date myself but, for ~80% of configuration needs good old INI never let me down. Named sections of name value pairs with string and number data types (maybe bools too. do not recall). et voilà!
Re:Can a Rubik's Cube be brute-forced? on Sunday July 09, 2023 @10:04AM (#36654522)
The answer is yes. They can be disassembled and reassembled in a solved state. That's what I did.
Re:UML: My Part in Its Downfall on Tuesday October 04, 2022 @06:22PM (#33087916)
You could search and replace UML with XML, MDA with XSD, and QVT with XSLT and this article would still accurately describe the early 2000's.
Agree. Modern C++, and discussions around it, become more esoteric with every revision. As software engineers we should spend our time understanding the esoterica of the problem domain, not the toolset.
Re:The Constitutionality of Civil Forfeiture (2016) on Saturday May 21, 2022 @04:22PM (#31461449)

Re:The most precious resource is agency on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @10:42PM (#27695791)
Such a promising introduction about the importance of agency, and then "blah blah kids these days blah uphill in the snow blah". "A reawakening of meaningful work"? Come on. Tell that to the child coal miner or factory worker of Carnegie's era.
Re:I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System on Sunday November 15, 2020 @09:11AM (#25101289)
Jesus. All of the cost and complexity of managing complex IT infrastructure... for light bulbs. Is this satire?
We need to consider that some things are a public good that must be paid for as such, not as merely a commodity. Public broadcasting is the model that works best and achieves the correct balance between public good and market forces. It can be neither entirely one (state controlled media) nor the other (click bait drivel).
Maybe getting rid of professional journalism, and crowd sourcing the news via secret algorithms, isn't such a great idea after all...

Re:Why the Unix newgrp command exists (sort of) on Saturday October 10, 2020 @12:11PM (#24739895)
The real question is: why not just suck it up and include that "ou"?
I recall using these at university for heavy duty GIS raster processing. IRIX was my first *nix experience.
